Why international students study here
Hungary has been an EU member since 2004 and is particularly attractive for German-speaking applicants for one reason above all: at three of the four universities, the complete medical degree can be completed in German, with German-language lectures, German-language examinations, and German textbooks. These programs have existed for decades. There is no numerus clausus in Hungary; admission is decided through an entrance examination in biology and chemistry and an interview.
The Four Universities in Hungary
Semmelweis University Budapest is the best-known institution in the country and offers human medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy in German and English. The University of Pécs in the south of Hungary also offers human medicine and dentistry in both languages and has a particularly high proportion of German-speaking students. The University of Szeged with its Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical Faculty is located near the border with Serbia and Romania and offers human medicine in German and English, and dentistry in English. The University of Debrecen in the east of Hungary teaches human medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy in English and is thus the location for applicants who specifically want to study in an international environment.
Who Hungary Is Right For
Hungary suits applicants who do not want to study anatomy in a foreign language under any circumstances, and all those who have a clear career goal in a German-speaking country or within the EU after graduation. Those who study in German speak the technical language from the start in the language they will later work in. Proximity also counts: Budapest, Pécs, Szeged, and Debrecen are reachable from Vienna and Munich by train, car, or direct flight within a manageable time.
Where Things Get Difficult
Hungary is expensive. At 14,400 to 18,700 EUR per academic year, the fees are significantly above those in Bulgaria or Romania, and the German-language programs cost more at Semmelweis University Budapest than the English-language ones. Add to this the reputation of the examination system: anatomy in Budapest is considered one of the toughest filters in Europe, and failure rates in the first years of study are high. Anyone who expects to get through without a fixed learning routine will be mistaken.

What does studying medicine here cost?
Tuition fees in Hungary depend on the location, the program, and the language of instruction. At Semmelweis University Budapest, the degree costs 9,340 EUR per semester in German and 8,930 EUR per semester in English. The University of Debrecen charges 7,250 EUR per semester for human medicine and 7,500 EUR per semester for dentistry. At the University of Pécs, human medicine is 7,500 EUR per semester in German and 7,200 EUR per semester in English; dentistry is 7,875 and 7,450 EUR per semester respectively. The University of Szeged charges 7,600 EUR per semester for human medicine in German and 7,900 EUR per semester in English, and 8,000 EUR per semester for dentistry.
Per academic year, this gives a range of 14,400 to 18,700 EUR. The spread is wide. Language shifts the price in both directions. In Budapest and Pécs the German-language program is more expensive than the English-language one; in Szeged it is the other way around.
For living costs in Hungary, 450 to 700 EUR per month is realistic, with Budapest clearly at the upper end and Debrecen, Szeged, and Pécs below that. Rent, public transport, food, and insurance are included in that figure.
As an estimate for one academic year at the University of Pécs: approximately 15,000 EUR in tuition fees plus approximately 6,600 EUR in living costs at 550 EUR per month, together just over 21,000 EUR. In Budapest the same calculation comes to around 26,000 EUR. These are reference values, not binding figures.
How does the application process work?
The application for medical studies in Hungary runs through spring and summer; the academic year starts in September. The selection consists of two parts: a written entrance examination in biology and chemistry at upper secondary school level, and an interview assessing motivation and language skills. Assessment is in the language the applicant will study in — in German for the German-language programs in Budapest, Pécs, and Szeged.
A specific high school grade average is not a formal requirement. There is no numerus clausus in Hungary. Those applying for an English-language program provide proof of English proficiency; for the German-language programs, the school leaving certificate typically suffices for international applicants. Places in the German-language cohorts are limited and in popular years are allocated early, which makes applying in spring worthwhile. A spring semester start is not provided for at the medical faculties in Hungary; the cohort begins together in September with an orientation week and on-site enrollment.

Is the degree recognised internationally?
Hungary has been a member of the European Union since 2004. Human medicine and dentistry fall under Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, which sets a common minimum standard for training in these professions across Europe. The Hungarian medical universities are listed in Annex V of the directive. The degree is therefore automatically recognized within the EU — no equivalency assessment and no aptitude test required.

For Switzerland, recognition of a Hungarian degree runs through MEBEKO; for Austria, through the Austrian Medical Association. Both processes are based on the same directive but have their own forms, their own fees, and their own processing times.
What is recognized is the completed degree. Anyone who wants to transfer from Hungary to a faculty in another country mid-study does not fall under this rule but instead under the individual credit recognition process at the receiving faculty. This is a process with an open outcome and depends on available places in higher semesters, which is why it cannot be factored in as a fallback plan.
Studying and everyday life on site
Human medicine in Hungary lasts six years, dentistry and pharmacy five. The structure follows the classic pattern: two pre-clinical years with anatomy, histology, physiology, and biochemistry, followed by the clinical phase at the university hospitals, ending with a practical year. Mandatory attendance at seminars and practical sessions is the rule at all four universities, along with tests during the semester. Absences are counted.
Examinations are to a large extent oral. At Semmelweis University Budapest, the anatomy examination in particular has a reputation that extends beyond national borders. Anyone who pushes the learning material back will quickly lose a semester. Hungarian is taught as an accompanying subject and is necessary for patient interaction during the clinical phase, including in the German-language programs. Practical placements during the semester breaks are part of the mandatory program and can often be completed in German-speaking countries.
When it comes to accommodation, Budapest is the most expensive in Hungary, while Debrecen, Szeged, and Pécs are significantly more affordable and more manageable. In Pécs and Budapest the German-speaking community is the largest, with their own student councils, past exam collections, and study groups that take in new cohorts. Szeged and Debrecen are university cities with short distances where daily life can be organized between faculty, clinic, and home without long commutes. Dormitory places exist at all four universities in Hungary, but they are not sufficient for every international student, which is why most rent privately.
