Transfer from Charles University Hradec Králové: Where to Continue Medicine or Dentistry in 2026
18.09.2026
What is Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové, and what does it teach in English?
Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is a faculty of Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, and it has taught in the city of Hradec Králové since 25 November 1945 (fnhk.cz, 2026). It runs two English-taught programmes: General Medicine over six years, ending in the MUDr., and Dentistry over five years, ending in the MDDr. Almost 10,000 doctors and dentists have graduated there.
Charles University itself dates from 1348 and is the oldest university in Central Europe. Hradec Králové is the smallest of its medical faculties. That shapes the place. Details of the location are on our Hradec Králové page. Teaching runs alongside the University Hospital Hradec Králové, and the faculty shares a campus project with the Faculty of Pharmacy, whose second building was scheduled for completion in 2026 (lfhk.cuni.cz, 2026). Both degrees are listed in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC, medicine under 5.1.1 and dentistry under 5.3.2.
Can you transfer from Charles University Hradec Králové to another university?
Yes. A student enrolled in General Medicine or Dentistry at Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, can transfer to another university and continue rather than restart. Medschool Experts handles exactly this: we are the leading specialist for study transfers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine, and our partner network is the largest available anywhere.
The mechanism is simple to describe and detailed to run. Your completed semesters, your ECTS credits and your Transcript of Records are assessed by the receiving faculty, which then names the year you may join. That assessment is individual. Two students from the same cohort in Hradec Králové can receive two different answers, because the subjects each has passed are different. We do the matching against our partner list before anybody signs anything, so the answer arrives before the decision, not after it.
Stay enrolled in Hradec Králové until your new place is confirmed in writing. Nobody should give up a study place for a plan. Give it up for an offer.
Why do students transfer from Charles University Hradec Králové?
Students leave Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové for five recurring reasons, and none of them is a complaint about the faculty. They are questions of fit, money and destination. Most people arrive at one of them somewhere between the second and the fifth year, once the shape of their own degree has become clear.
First, cost. Tuition of 400,000 CZK a year in medicine, plus living costs, is a figure that has to hold for six years, and family circumstances do not always hold that long. Second, exam fit. Some students pass everything and still find the pace or the format of one particular subject working against them, and a faculty with a different rhythm suits them better. We specialise in this case.
Third, personal and organisational reasons. A difficulty with one course, one arrangement or one set of circumstances can stop a perfectly capable student from continuing where they are. Fourth, a career goal in the United States, which is best served by a faculty built around the USMLE. Fifth, a career goal in Germany, where some universities prepare students specifically for that route. We treat all five the same way: as planning, not as failure.
Where can Charles University Hradec Králové students transfer to?
Students of Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové transfer to partner universities chosen by goal rather than by ranking. The four goals we see most often are a lower total cost, a better exam fit, a career in the United States and a career in Germany. Both Hradec Králové programmes, medicine and dentistry, have destinations within our network.
| Your goal | Option we look at first | Open to |
|---|---|---|
| Bring the total cost down | Faculty of Medicine Foča, University of East Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina: 3,500 EUR tuition a year, around 7,500 EUR a year including living costs (Medschool Experts figures, 2026) | Medicine and dentistry |
| Find an exam format and pace that fit | A partner faculty matched to the subjects you have already passed; we compare formats before we recommend one | Medicine and dentistry |
| Work as a doctor in the United States | Mostar School of Medicine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the only European university preparing specifically for USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, with 30 places a year; Caribbean medical schools for USMLE, US clinical rotations and residency | Medicine only |
| Work as a doctor or dentist in Germany | Medical University of Varna, Bulgaria, an EU university where the final practical year can be done in Germany through Medschool Experts; the same is possible from Foča | Medicine and dentistry |
| Keep an EU degree with automatic recognition | An EU partner university, so that Directive 2005/36/EC still applies at the end; Varna is the most common choice | Medicine and dentistry |
The full list is longer. Our partner universities cover medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine across Europe and beyond, and which of them is right depends on your transcript, not on a brochure.
How much can a Charles University Hradec Králové student save by transferring?
A General Medicine student at Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové pays 400,000 CZK in tuition for the academic year 2026/2027, about 16,400 EUR at the 2026 European Central Bank rate. At the Faculty of Medicine Foča in Bosnia and Herzegovina, tuition is 3,500 EUR a year and the whole year, tuition plus living costs, comes to around 7,500 EUR (Medschool Experts figures, 2026).
| Item, per academic year | Hradec Králové, medicine | Foča, medicine |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | 400,000 CZK, about 16,400 EUR (lfhk.cuni.cz, 2026/2027) | 3,500 EUR (Medschool Experts, 2026) |
| Living costs | around 550 EUR a month, about 6,600 EUR a year (Medschool Experts research, 2026) | included in the figure below |
| Total for one year | around 23,000 EUR | around 7,500 EUR |
| Difference for one year | around 15,500 EUR | |
| Dentistry tuition for comparison | 410,000 CZK, about 16,800 EUR (lfhk.cuni.cz, 2026/2027) | 3,500 EUR (Medschool Experts, 2026) |
A student who moves after the third year of medicine and has three years left is therefore looking at roughly 46,000 EUR across those three years. That is arithmetic, not a promise: the year you enter decides how many years remain, and other partner universities sit at other price levels. Ask us for yours.
Which year can you enter after leaving Charles University Hradec Králové?
There is no fixed ceiling on the entry year for a student leaving Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. Medschool Experts frequently achieves high placements, often into year 4 or year 5. Every case is reviewed individually, and the aim is always the highest entry possible with no loss of time, or as little as can be managed.
As a rule of thumb, a transfer works when no more than two exams are still outstanding and their combined ECTS stays below a maximum. That rule exists because the receiving faculty has to be able to slot you into a running year without gaps in the chain of prerequisites. So the transcript decides.
How does a transfer from Charles University Hradec Králové work with Medschool Experts?
A transfer from Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové runs in four steps with Medschool Experts: a free consultation, a review of your academic record, a placement offer naming the university and the entry year, and the switch itself on an agreed timetable. You stay enrolled in Hradec Králové until the new place is confirmed.
In the consultation we ask what you have passed and where you want to end up. In the review we compare that record against the partner universities that teach your subject. The offer names one university and one entry year. Then we plan the switch around the receiving faculty's academic calendar so that you lose as little time as possible. No guesswork. Other students have described that sequence in their own words on our student stories page.

Does the EU recognition of a Czech degree change if you transfer?
A degree from Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is automatically recognised across the European Union under Directive 2005/36/EC, because the Czech Republic is an EU member state. Recognition follows the university that awards the final degree, not the university where you started. Your destination decides.
That has two practical consequences. If you transfer to another EU university, for example Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria, the finished degree is again covered by Directive 2005/36/EC, listed in Annex V under 5.1.1 for medicine and 5.3.2 for dentistry, and no equivalence assessment or knowledge test is required in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. If you transfer outside the EU, the finished degree is assessed by the authority of the country where you want to work, through that country's own equivalence procedure.
Neither route is better in the abstract. It depends on you. A student aiming at the United States is often better served by a faculty built around the USMLE than by an automatic EU entitlement they will not use. A student who wants to practise in Germany or Austria usually wants to stay inside the directive. We put the destination first and work backwards, and we say plainly which route each option leads to. The language requirement stays either way: every country asks for medical-level proficiency in its own national language before it grants a licence.
When should Charles University Hradec Králové students start planning a transfer?
The best moment to start planning a transfer from Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové is as soon as the thought becomes a repeating one, and at the latest one semester before you would want to begin somewhere else. Early planning widens the list of possible entry years. Late planning narrows it.
Three things help, and all three are free to do now. Keep your Transcript of Records complete and up to date from the first semester, because that document is the whole basis of any credit assessment. Note the ECTS value of every subject you pass, since the rule of thumb about outstanding exams is measured in ECTS. And bring the exam you are least sure about forward rather than pushing it back, because a cleared exam is worth more on a transcript than an explanation.
Then talk to us. A free consultation costs you an hour and tells you which entry years are realistic with the record you have today. Nothing about it obliges you to move.
The author's view
I studied dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021, and I started at 24, which made me a late starter in my own cohort. So when a student in Hradec Králové writes to me about money, or about one exam that will not come together, or about a career plan that has quietly changed direction, I do not read it as a crisis. I read it as the ordinary middle of a long degree. Nobody chooses a medical faculty at 19 with complete information, and the faculty is rarely the problem.
What I have learned from more than 500 placements is that the transcript does most of the talking. Students often arrive convinced their case is hopeless, and then the record shows a clean run through the preclinical years and two outstanding exams worth few ECTS, which is a good starting position. Others arrive expecting year 5 and find that the realistic answer is year 3. Both conversations are worth having early, because time is the one thing a transfer cannot give back. My advice to anyone in Hradec Králové who is thinking about it: get the record in order, decide which country you want to work in, and then ask. The asking is free.
Summary
- Students of General Medicine and Dentistry at Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové can transfer to another university and continue their studies rather than start again.
- The usual reasons are cost, a better fit with exam formats and pace, personal or organisational circumstances, a career goal in the United States and a career goal in Germany.
- The entry year is decided individually from your Transcript of Records and your ECTS credits, and entry into the later years is often possible.
- Recognition follows the university that awards the final degree, so the destination country determines whether Directive 2005/36/EC applies or a national equivalence procedure does.
- Medschool Experts runs the whole process in four steps, and you stay enrolled in Hradec Králové until the new place is confirmed in writing.
- Planning early, with a complete transcript and outstanding exams cleared, widens the range of entry years available to you.

The Faculty of Medicine Foča in Bosnia and Herzegovina teaches dentistry in English, and so does Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria. Do I have to leave Charles University Hradec Králové before I have a new place?
No, and you should not. Stay enrolled at Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic until your new university has confirmed the place and the entry year in writing. Our process is built around that order: consultation, record review, written placement offer, and only then the switch. A plan is not a place.
How many exams can still be outstanding when I transfer?
As a rule of thumb, usually no more than two, and their combined ECTS has to stay below a maximum. The reason is practical: the receiving faculty has to fit you into a running year without breaking the chain of prerequisites. Since the limit is measured in ECTS rather than in exam titles, two small subjects and two large ones are not the same case. We check yours against the transcript.
Is my degree still recognised in the EU after a transfer?
That depends on where you finish, not where you started. A degree awarded by any EU university, including Charles University in the Czech Republic and Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria, is automatically recognised across the EU, the EEA and Switzerland under Directive 2005/36/EC, with no equivalence assessment. A degree awarded outside the EU is assessed by the authority of the country where you want to work. Every country also asks for its own language at medical level.
I want to work in the United States. Where should I go?
Mostar School of Medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only European university that prepares specifically for the USMLE, Step 1 for the preclinical part and Step 2 CK for the clinical part, in small groups with a better teacher-to-student ratio than other European medical schools and only 30 places a year. Medschool Experts places students there reliably without an entrance test as long as our own quota allows. Caribbean medical schools are the other route into the US system, with US clinical rotations and residency. Both are medicine options only.
What does a transfer through Medschool Experts cost me to find out about?
Nothing. The consultation is free and carries no obligation, and it ends with a realistic picture of which universities could take you and at which entry year. Bring your Transcript of Records and a clear idea of where you want to practise later. If we cannot improve on your current situation, we will tell you that as well.
