Study Medicine in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is an interesting destination for medical school because six faculties there lead to the MD in English and none of them select students using Numerus Clausus (NC). Your grades do not determine your place. What is assessed is your school record, your scientific background, and an interview — and because each faculty offers multiple start dates per year, you do not necessarily have to wait a year after completing high school.

Six Islands, One Common Goal

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Curaçao, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Medschool Experts supports a faculty at each of these locations. As different as the islands are, the study model is similar. The preclinical phase — anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, and pharmacology — takes place on the respective island, alongside preparation for Step 1 of the USMLE. Clinical rotations then follow at affiliated teaching hospitals, predominantly in the United States.

Where the Degree Leads

The curricula are designed for the USMLE and for specialty training in the USA. Those who pass the exams apply for a residency through the Match; for Canada, the path begins with the MCCQE of the Medical Council of Canada. If your career goal is to practice medicine within the European Union, a sober comparison with a study location in the EU is worthwhile before you enroll.

What the Region Demands

Life on a small island is not the same as life in a university city. Almost everything is imported, which means rent and weekly groceries are above European levels, and the journey from Europe typically takes a full day including connections. Cohort sizes are small, the pace of examinations is high, and teaching is in English from day one. Those who want to travel home every few weeks are in the wrong place in the Caribbean.

Tuition fees in the Caribbean range from approximately 7,600 to 28,500 USD per year depending on the island and phase of study. All amounts are in US dollars.

At the lower end is Commonwealth University College of Medicine in Gros Islet, St. Lucia, at 8,100 USD per year, or 7,600 USD if paid in two equal installments. The University of Health Sciences Antigua charges 8,500 USD per year. New Anglia University in Anguilla bills by term: 3,600 USD in Premed, 4,300 USD in Basic Sciences, and 5,500 USD in Clinical Sciences. Victoria University of Barbados sits at 16,000 USD per year. Avalon University on Curaçao charges 10,395 USD per semester preclinically. Saint James School of Medicine on St. Vincent charges 9,150 USD preclinically and 14,250 USD per semester clinically, plus a one-time enrollment fee of 2,500 USD.

For living expenses, plan on 600 to 1,400 USD per month depending on the island. Add examination fees for the USMLE, learning platforms, flights home, and travel to clinical rotations.

None of the six campuses uses a Numerus Clausus (NC). The faculties select students themselves, looking at the school record, preparation in biology, chemistry, and physics, and a selection interview. The focus is less on factual knowledge and more on motivation and realism — whether you have understood what you are taking on: years of study in English, a high workload, the USMLE as the goal, and clinical rotations away from the island.

The language of instruction is English throughout at all six campuses. None of the universities requires Latin or a preparatory internship. Anguilla also has a Premed section for those who need to build up their scientific foundations first.

The pace is similar at all six faculties: small cohorts, a high density of examinations, and a great deal of multiple choice. That format is no coincidence — the USMLE works exactly that way. Attendance is taken seriously, and in a cohort of a few dozen students it is immediately obvious when someone is absent.

Students live in apartments and shared flats; there is no large student residence at any of the campuses. Rental markets are small and shaped by tourism, so searching early saves meaningful money. Willemstad and the Bridgetown area offer the most infrastructure.

The community of students from German-speaking countries is small on all six islands. With the clinical phase comes a break: rotations take place at teaching hospitals outside the island, predominantly in the USA, which means a second apartment search and a different working rhythm. Letters of recommendation from those rotations count later when applying for a residency.
