Study Medicine in Serbia

Serbia is the most affordable country in this comparison and at the same time the one that requires the most clarification. Serbia is not a member of the European Union but is an EU accession candidate; no accession date has been set. As a result, a Serbian medical degree does not benefit from automatic recognition. Anyone choosing Serbia should understand this point before applying.

Three State Faculties

The University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Medical Sciences offers human medicine and pharmacy for 6,000 EUR per year. The University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine covers human medicine, dentistry, and nursing for 6,000 EUR per year. The University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Medicine teaches human medicine and dentistry for 7,000 EUR per year. All three are state universities teaching their international programs in English.

Who Serbia is suitable for

Serbia suits applicants who need to start with a limited budget and who are prepared to actively plan the licensing process in their target country. The fees are a fraction of what studying in Croatia or the Czech Republic costs. That is the advantage. The trade-off is the absence of automatic recognition.

The limitation explained

A medical degree earned in Serbia may not be automatically recognized in your target country, and additional assessments may be required. Many students therefore transfer after the pre-clinical section to a university within the European Union. Anyone planning such a transfer should prepare for it from the very first semester.

The three Serbian faculties charge per academic year. Kragujevac and Niš charge 6,000 EUR per year; Novi Sad charges 7,000 EUR per year. Over six years, that amounts to 36,000 EUR in Kragujevac and Niš and 42,000 EUR in Novi Sad — making Serbia one of the most affordable places to study medicine in Europe.

The cost of living is also low. Most students manage on 400 to 600 EUR per month, with Novi Sad slightly more expensive than Kragujevac and Niš. A rough estimate for one academic year in Niš: 6,000 EUR in tuition plus ten months at around 500 EUR each, approximately 11,000 EUR in total.

One item is missing from this calculation: those who plan to have their degree recognized later should factor in the costs of the recognition process and any additional examinations required.

The medical faculties in Serbia allocate international study places through an entrance examination in biology and chemistry, sometimes supplemented by an interview. Preparation pays off. The high school diploma or equivalent grade is taken into account but does not alone determine admission. Vocational qualifications in a healthcare field may also be considered.

The academic year begins in autumn; application windows are in spring and summer. Proof of English proficiency is required. Serbian is learned alongside the degree and is needed from the clinical section onward.

Medical studies in Serbia last six years. The pre-clinical period covers anatomy, histology, physiology, and biochemistry; much of the examination is oral. From the third year, teaching shifts to the clinics. The university hospitals serve as medical centers for their entire regions, giving students exposure to a broad range of cases early. Teaching remains in English, but bedside conversations take place in Serbian.

Finding accommodation is straightforward. Rooms in Kragujevac and Niš are easy to find and inexpensive; Novi Sad is slightly more expensive. The German-speaking student community is smaller than in Hungary or Bulgaria, but connections form through international groups and those who take Serbian seriously.
