How Much Does It Cost to Study Dentistry in Europe? 2026 Country Comparison

How Much Does It Cost to Study Dentistry in Europe? 2026 Country Comparison

A dentistry degree taught in English costs between roughly 4,800 and 24,250 euros a year in tuition across Europe in 2026. That is a five-fold spread for the same professional qualification, and the gap widens once rent, instruments and dental materials are added. Five years is a long time to be wrong about the number.

Dentistry also sits above medicine on almost every fee list at the same university. The University of Debrecen charges 17,500 US dollars a year for dentistry against 16,900 for general medicine in 2026/27. The Medical University of Sofia asks 10,000 euros for dental medicine and 9,950 for medicine in 2026/27. The reason is physical: a phantom-head laboratory, a bench for every student, and a stream of burs, gypsum, composite and acrylic that gets consumed rather than borrowed.

What follows is a country-by-country comparison built for the decision itself. Annual tuition with its year. Five-year totals with living costs. The dentistry-only line items that generic tables never carry, from instrument kits to loupes. Then a worked budget for one named city that adds up.

Every figure carries the year it was published, and every source is named in the sentence that uses it. Last reviewed: September 2026.

How much does it cost to study dentistry in Europe in 2026?

Tuition runs from 4,800 euros a year at Victor Babes University in Timisoara to 24,250 euros at Charles University in Prague for 2026/27. Romania, Georgia and Serbia sit at the bottom. Bulgaria clusters at 10,000 euros. Hungary, Poland and private Spain hold the middle. That is the spread in one sentence.

The table lists the published English-track dentistry fee at named universities, each with the academic year the university attached to it. Where a university bills in US dollars or Polish zloty, the original currency is kept. That is what lands on the invoice.

Two things in that table deserve a second look. Romanian, Croatian and Slovak dental programmes run six years rather than five, so a low annual fee buys an extra year of rent. And Charles University charges exactly the same 24,250 euros for dentistry as for general medicine in 2026/27, which is unusual enough to be worth asking about directly.

Why does dentistry cost more per year than medicine at the same university?

Because dentistry consumes things. A medical student needs a lecture hall, a ward and a library. A dental student needs a numbered bench in a phantom-head laboratory, a mannequin skull with replaceable typodont teeth, a handpiece, and a weekly supply of burs, gypsum, alginate, composite and acrylic that is used up and never comes back.

The gap shows in the fee lists. The University of Debrecen published 17,500 US dollars a year for dentistry against 16,900 for general medicine in 2026/27. The University of Pecs quotes 17,350 dollars for dentistry and 16,750 for medicine for 2027/28. The Medical University of Sofia set dental medicine at 10,000 euros and medicine at 9,950 euros for 2026/27. The premium is real but modest.

The bigger difference is often hidden in how a university handles materials. Semmelweis University in Budapest charges dentistry tuition of 10,450 US dollars per semester for the 2026 intake and then bills dental materials on top: 1,250 dollars per semester in year two, and 2,500 dollars per semester in years three, four and five. Add those up and the materials line alone reaches 17,500 dollars across the degree. The University of Pecs takes the opposite approach and states plainly that the annual dentistry fee already includes the cost of dental materials per semester.

Same country. Same profession. Two completely different invoices.

What does a five-year dentistry degree cost once living expenses are included?

Between roughly 75,000 and 193,000 euros, all in. The table below multiplies the annual tuition by five and adds sixty months of a realistic student budget: a room in a shared flat, food, utilities, transport and insurance. It is the number that actually matters when a family sits down and decides whether this is affordable.

Romania, Croatia and Slovakia appear on a five-year basis for comparability. Their programmes run six years, so add a further year of tuition and rent to those rows: the Croatian and Slovak totals move up by roughly 20,000 and 30,000 euros.

Georgia is the outlier at the cheap end, and the reason is structural. Tbilisi State Medical University listed its English-medium Dental Medicine programme at 7,000 US dollars a year in 2026, and Tbilisi rent is a fraction of Prague rent. Georgia is also outside the European Union, which changes what the degree does after graduation.

Which costs are specific to dentistry that a generic comparison skips?

Instruments, materials, loupes and phantom-head course fees. None appear on a tuition page, all appear on a bank statement, and together they add several thousand euros across the degree. A comparison that stops at the tuition line misses the part that surprises people in year two.

Instrument kits. Most faculties require a personal set of hand instruments before preclinical work begins. Dentaltix, a European dental supplier, listed student rotary instrument kits from 18 euros to 2,183 euros for a full W&H rotating set in 2026, with a mid-range Bader Kit Smart at 399 euros. A realistic purchase, built up over the first three years, lands between 800 and 1,500 euros.

Materials and consumables. Where they are not bundled into tuition, budget 400 to 700 euros a year from the second year onwards. Semmelweis University publishes its own figure, and at 2,500 dollars per semester in the clinical years it is at the top of that range.

Loupes. Magnification is close to standard equipment now. LumaDent listed Galilean through-the-lens loupes at 1,095 US dollars for 2.5x and 1,395 dollars for 3.0x in 2026. Most students buy in year three or four, when clinical work on real patients begins. Flip-up systems under 300 euros are common among those who want to defer the decision.

Scrubs, coats and protection. Scrubs, a lab coat and safety glasses run 250 to 400 euros over five years.

Administrative fees. Small individually, and they add up. The University of Debrecen listed a 150 dollar application fee and a 350 dollar entrance exam fee for 2026/27. The University of Pecs listed 200 dollars for the application and 220 for registration. Semmelweis University lists a 400 dollar admission procedure fee, a 230 dollar enrolment fee and a 2,000 dollar deposit credited against the first semester.

What does living cost per month in each university city?

Between about 650 euros a month in Tbilisi and 1,300 euros in Prague or Madrid for a student sharing a flat. Rent drives almost the whole difference. Food, transport and utilities vary far less across Central and Eastern Europe than headline cost-of-living indexes suggest.

Valencia or Madrid, SpainEUR 400-600EUR 1,000-1,300
Prague, Czech RepublicEUR 500-650EUR 1,100-1,300

These budgets are lower than the generic city figures published by cost-of-living databases, and deliberately so. Numbeo put the estimated monthly cost for a single person in Sofia at 757.90 euros excluding rent on 1 September 2026, and at roughly 889 US dollars in Budapest on 3 September 2026. Those baskets assume an adult who eats in restaurants and rents alone. A dental student who shares a two-bedroom flat and cooks spends considerably less, which is why the worked example below comes in under the index number.

City choice inside a country matters more than most people expect. Plovdiv and Varna run 15 to 25 per cent below Sofia, and Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs sit well below Budapest, under the same national curriculum framework and with the same recognition at the end. The smaller city is often the better financial decision without being a worse academic one. Our overview of partner universities lists the cities alongside the programmes.

What does a full five-year budget in Plovdiv actually add up to?

Just over 100,000 euros. The Medical University of Plovdiv published a fee of 10,000 euros a year for its English-taught Dental Medicine programme for 2026/27, over five years. Everything else is a 2026 estimate for the city, itemised so any line can be argued with.

Total, five years in PlovdivEUR 100,650

That works out at 20,130 euros a year, or about 1,678 euros a month across sixty months. Tuition and dentistry-specific costs make up 56,500 euros; living costs make up 44,150. The split explains why a 4,000-euro difference in annual tuition moves the five-year total by 20,000 euros, while a 50-euro difference in rent moves it by 3,000.

Two lines in that budget are optional in the strict sense and neither should be cut. Loupes protect a career that depends on a working neck and working eyes. Flights home protect the thing that makes five years abroad survivable.

When do the payments actually fall due across the year?

Not in one lump. A dentistry year is paid in two tuition instalments plus a scatter of smaller charges, and the cash-flow shape matters more than the annual total when the money crosses a border. The sequence below is typical rather than universal.

  • Roughly 12 to 16 weeks before the start. A deposit or booking fee secures the place. Semmelweis University lists 2,000 US dollars, credited against the first semester. Others ask a few hundred euros.
  • Four to six weeks before enrolment. First semester tuition, usually half the annual figure. Some universities require it before the residence permit application can proceed.
  • The first two weeks on the ground. Rent deposit, enrolment fee, health insurance and the first tranche of the instrument kit. The single most expensive fortnight of the degree: typically 1,500 to 2,500 euros beyond tuition.
  • Around February. Second semester tuition.
  • From year two, each semester. Dental materials, where the university bills them separately.
  • Once a year, usually spring. Residence card and insurance renewal.
  • Year three or four. Loupes, and the clinical instrument top-up.

What does a tuition table not tell you about a dental faculty?

Chair time. The number that decides whether five years produces a confident clinician is how many hours each student spends with a handpiece in their hand, and no fee schedule publishes it. Two faculties charging the same 10,000 euros can differ by a factor of two in preclinical bench hours and in the number of patients a student treats before graduating.

Four questions get at it, and all four can be put to a faculty in writing before a deposit is paid. How many students share one phantom-head bench? Are clinical patients supplied by the university clinic or found by the student? Are dental materials inside the fee, and what did that bill come to last year? What does repeating a year cost?

The last one is quietly important. A repeated year is a full extra year of tuition and living costs, so a 10,000-euro programme with a heavy failure rate can end up dearer than a 15,000-euro one with strong support. Nobody publishes that comparison. The students who lived it will tell you, which is why student accounts are worth reading before a fee table is.

Currency is the other blind spot. Hungarian universities bill in US dollars, Polish universities in zloty, Czech and Croatian universities in euros. A ten per cent exchange-rate move on a 17,500-dollar fee is 1,750 dollars a year, and no comparison table carries that risk.

How do you compare two specific offers without guessing?

By putting them side by side on the same basis: programme length, what the fee includes, what is billed separately, the city's rent level, and the currency of the invoice. That is five columns, and once they are filled in the decision usually makes itself.

Entry requirements are the part that cannot be generalised. They vary by university and by your individual profile, including which secondary-school science subjects you took and where. Book a free individual consultation and Medschool Experts will assess your case directly against the universities you are considering. Marcel Kloos, who studied dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia between 2015 and 2021, has placed more than 500 study places through Medschool Experts, and the placement service covers the application as well as the choice.

What is the dentistry degree worth once the fees are paid?

Inside the European Union, a great deal, and automatically. EU directive 2005/36/EC sets the minimum standard for basic dental training at five years of full-time theoretical and practical study, and lists the qualifying diplomas of every member state in Annex V, point 5.3.2. A qualification on that list must be recognised by every other member state under Article 21, with the same effect as a domestically issued one. A dental degree earned in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Spain therefore travels across the Union without a separate equivalence examination.

No fee table carries that fact, and it is the largest financial one here. It is also why the six-year Romanian and Slovak programmes and the five-year Bulgarian ones arrive at the same professional destination.

The United Kingdom is now a separate route, and a paid one. A dentist holding a non-UK degree registers with the General Dental Council through the Overseas Registration Examination. On 6 May 2026 the General Dental Council confirmed its fees under the new examination contract: an application processing fee of 115 pounds, an ORE Part 1 fee of 485 pounds, and an ORE Part 2 fee of 6,967 pounds, applying from the 2026/27 contract year that runs from 31 May 2026. It also confirmed capacity of 2,400 Part 1 places and 944 Part 2 places in that first year. Anyone planning a British career should carry roughly 7,600 pounds of examination cost in the five-year plan from the outset.

Georgia sits outside this framework. A Georgian dental degree is a recognised medical qualification and a considerably cheaper one, but it does not carry automatic EU recognition under the directive, so a graduate intending to practise in the European Union works through the individual recognition route of the country concerned. That is a legitimate path with a real cost and a real timeline, and it belongs in the budget from day one rather than as a surprise in year five.

The author's view

I studied dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia between 2015 and 2021, and the number I wish somebody had explained to me at the start is not the tuition fee. It is what the tuition fee buys. A fee page tells you the price of enrolment. It does not tell you how many hours you will stand at a phantom head, how many burs you will get through preparing the same crown for the fourth time, or whether the gypsum and composite you use every week are already paid for.

That last point is where I see families get caught. A programme that looks 3,000 euros a year cheaper can end up level once materials are billed separately, and a programme that looks expensive can turn out to include everything. The question to put to a faculty in writing is boring and decisive: what did a second-year student actually pay last year on top of tuition? Anyone can answer that. Not everyone volunteers it.

I practise in Bern now as a Swiss-licensed dentist, and the training I paid for in Sofia is the reason. Dentistry is one of the few degrees where money converts almost directly into hand skill, because the expensive part is bench time and materials. Spend it deliberately. If you are weighing two offers and cannot tell which is genuinely cheaper, that is what a consultation is for.

Summary

  • English-taught dentistry tuition in Europe ran from about 4,800 euros a year at Victor Babes University in Timisoara to 24,250 euros a year at Charles University in Prague for 2026.
  • Bulgaria's three main dental faculties, in Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv, all published 10,000 euros a year for 2026, over a five-year programme.
  • Hungarian universities bill in US dollars: 17,350 at the University of Pecs for 2027/28, 17,500 at the University of Debrecen for 2026/27, 20,900 at Semmelweis University for the 2026 intake.
  • Dentistry costs more per year than medicine at most universities, but only by a few hundred; the real difference is whether dental materials sit inside the fee.
  • Instruments, materials, loupes, clothing and books add roughly 6,100 euros across five years at Bulgarian price levels in 2026.
  • A full five-year budget in Plovdiv, tuition and living costs included, comes to about 100,650 euros, or 1,678 euros a month.
  • Romanian, Croatian and Slovak dental programmes run six years, which adds a full year of tuition and rent to any comparison.
  • EU directive 2005/36/EC gives an EU dental degree automatic recognition across the Union; the United Kingdom route runs through the General Dental Council's Overseas Registration Examination, priced at 485 pounds for Part 1 and 6,967 pounds for Part 2 in 2026.

Conclusion

The cheapest tuition is rarely the cheapest degree, and the dearest is not automatically the best clinic. Programme length, whether materials sit inside the fee, the rent level in the city, and the hours a student spends at a bench move the five-year total by more than any headline figure does.

Pick two or three universities that fit your budget and your profile, then compare them on the same five columns rather than on their brochures. If you want that comparison done properly for your case, book a free consultation and Medschool Experts will build it with you.

Frequently Asked Questions about the cost of studying dentistry in Europe

Is dentistry more expensive than medicine at the same university?

Usually, yes, but by less than people expect. The University of Debrecen published 17,500 US dollars a year for dentistry against 16,900 for general medicine in 2026/27, and the Medical University of Sofia set dental medicine at 10,000 euros against 9,950 for medicine in 2026/27. Charles University in Prague charged an identical 24,250 euros for both in 2026/27. The larger cost difference sits in materials and instruments, not tuition.

Which country offers the lowest total cost for an English-taught dentistry degree?

On a five-year basis in 2026, Georgia and Romania are cheapest, at roughly 75,000 to 80,000 euros including living costs. Serbia follows near 83,000 euros. Bulgaria lands around 95,000 with higher tuition but low living costs. Romania's programme runs six years, so add a further year of tuition and rent before the comparison is final.

Do dentistry tuition fees include dental materials and instruments?

It depends entirely on the university, and this is the question worth asking first. The University of Pecs states that its annual dentistry fee includes the cost of dental materials per semester. Semmelweis University bills materials separately, at 1,250 US dollars per semester in year two and 2,500 dollars per semester in years three to five. Personal hand instruments are almost always bought by the student.

How much should a dental student budget for instruments and loupes?

Around 2,400 to 3,000 euros across the degree at 2026 prices. Student instrument kits from European suppliers ranged from a basic set under 100 euros to a full W&H rotating set at 2,183 euros in 2026, with mid-range kits near 400 euros. Loupes are the other large item: LumaDent listed Galilean through-the-lens models at 1,095 US dollars for 2.5x magnification in 2026.

Is an EU dentistry degree recognised across the European Union?

Yes, and automatically. EU directive 2005/36/EC sets basic dental training at a minimum of five years of full-time study and lists each member state's qualifying diplomas in Annex V, point 5.3.2. Under Article 21 every member state must recognise a listed qualification with the same effect as one it issues itself. A degree from Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Czechia, Slovakia or Spain therefore travels across the Union.

What does registering as a dentist in the United Kingdom cost with a non-UK degree?

Roughly 7,600 pounds in examination fees at 2026 rates. The General Dental Council confirmed on 6 May 2026 that from the contract year beginning 31 May 2026 the application processing fee is 115 pounds, the Overseas Registration Examination Part 1 costs 485 pounds and Part 2 costs 6,967 pounds. The Council also confirmed 2,400 Part 1 and 944 Part 2 places for that year.

Do tuition fees increase during the five years of study?

Many universities fix the fee for a cohort at the level published in its entry year; others index it annually. The safest planning assumption is a modest annual rise plus a currency movement, particularly where the invoice is issued in US dollars. Ask the faculty in writing whether the quoted figure is guaranteed for the whole programme before paying a deposit.
