Cost of Studying Dentistry in Hungary 2026: Tuition and Living Expenses
08.09.2026
How much does dentistry cost at Semmelweis University in Budapest in 2026?
Semmelweis University charges $10,450 per semester for the English-language dentistry programme in 2026, which comes to $20,900 a year across the five-year, ten-semester Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry course. On top of that, applicants pay a one-time $400 admission-procedure fee and a $2,000 deposit that is credited against first-semester tuition, plus a $230 enrollment fee once a place is confirmed. Equipment costs extra.
From the second year onward, Semmelweis adds a separate material fee for dental equipment: $1,250 per semester in Year 2, rising to $2,500 per semester in Years 3 through 5, according to the university's own 2026 fee schedule. That fee covers instruments, consumables and the wear on shared clinical equipment that a purely academic tuition fee does not touch.
How much does dentistry cost at the University of Debrecen in 2026?
The University of Debrecen prices its five-year, ten-semester dentistry programme at $17,500 a year for 2026 entry. Application costs $150 and a separate entrance-procedure fee of $350 covers the exam and interview process. The university states that annual tuition already includes material costs, so there is no extra per-semester equipment bill layered on top the way there is at Semmelweis. One less line item.
How much does dentistry cost at the University of Szeged in 2026?
Szeged prices dentistry by semester rather than by year. The first semester costs €6,400 plus a €1,600 deposit, and semesters two through ten cost €7,600 each, for a 2026 first-year total near €14,000 and roughly €15,200 in each following year. A combined application and entrance fee of €300 applies once, covering up to two examination attempts across as many as three health-science programmes. Szeged's fee structure explicitly bundles general Hungarian health insurance into tuition, but excludes summer clinical practice, textbooks, accommodation and daily living costs. Insurance is bundled in.
How much does dentistry cost at the University of Pécs in 2026?
Pécs charges $17,350 a year for 2026 entry, split into $9,300 for the first semester and $8,050 for the second. An application fee of $200, an entrance-exam fee of $250 and a registration fee of $220 apply once, before the first semester begins. The university describes its tuition as inclusive of standard material costs, similar to Debrecen, rather than adding a separate per-semester equipment charge. No separate materials bill.
How do the four universities compare on tuition and fees?
The gap is small. Side by side, the cheapest and most expensive of the four differ by a few thousand dollars a year, not a multiple. Materials and one-off fees move the real difference more than the headline tuition number does.
| University | Annual tuition, 2026 | One-off admission fees | Clinical materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semmelweis University, Budapest | $20,900 | $400 + $230 | $1,250–$2,500 per semester from Year 2 |
| University of Debrecen | $17,500 | $150 + $350 | Included in tuition |
| University of Szeged | ~€15,200 (€14,000 in Year 1) | €300 | Not itemised separately; summer practice excluded |
| University of Pécs | $17,350 | $200 + $250 + $220 | Included in tuition |

How much do rent, food and daily life cost in Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs?
A single room outside the city centre costs roughly $600 a month in Budapest and closer to $350 to $450 a month in the three smaller cities, based on September 2026 and July 2026 data. Food, transport and rent together put a modest monthly budget somewhere between $530 and $780, depending on the city.
| City | 1-bed rent, centre | 1-bed rent, outside centre | Transport pass | Approx. monthly total* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budapest | 268,750 HUF | 209,583 HUF | 9,000 HUF | ~269,000 HUF (~$780) |
| Debrecen | 200,556 HUF | 152,222 HUF | 8,575 HUF | ~211,000 HUF (~$610) |
| Szeged | 169,429 HUF | 123,333 HUF | 9,600 HUF | ~183,000 HUF (~$530) |
| Pécs | 202,571 HUF | 144,429 HUF | 7,650 HUF | ~202,000 HUF (~$585) |
*Outside-centre rent plus a standard grocery basket of approximately 50,000 HUF and one transport pass; excludes tuition. Rent and transport figures: Numbeo user-contributed data, accessed September 2026 (Budapest, Debrecen) and July 2026 (Szeged, Pécs). USD figures use an approximate rate of 1 USD = 345 HUF, September 2026.
Budapest costs more. It is the most expensive of the four by a clear margin, and also the only one with its own international airport, direct flights across Europe, and a job market where dental clinics and translation agencies are easy to find for a first part-time role.
How is the five-year dentistry programme structured, and what do phantom-lab materials cost?
All four universities run the same broad shape: two preclinical years of anatomy, physiology and dental materials science, then three clinical years on real patients, with the phantom-head simulation lab bridging the two. Year 2 is where the equipment bills start.
The jump is real. It is also predictable. A student who plans for roughly double the materials budget from Year 3 onward is never caught out by it.
{{cta}}What should you budget for, month by month, before your first semester?
Plan ahead. Most of the cost of moving to Hungary lands in the two or three months before term starts, well outside tuition itself.
Confirm your place and pay the deposit and admission fees. Open a bank account that can send an international transfer.
Start the housing search. Dormitory rooms and the better-located private flats in Budapest go early.
Apply for a Hungarian residence permit. It carries its own government fee, separate from tuition.
Budget for a starter kit of basic dental instruments and a lab coat. Even Year 1 involves hands-on preclinical work.
Pay first-semester tuition, cover flights and a rental deposit, and set aside cash for basic furnishings.
What does a Hungarian dental degree lead to under EU Directive 2005/36/EC?
A five-year, roughly 5,000-hour Hungarian dentistry degree qualifies for automatic recognition across the European Union and European Economic Area under Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V, point 5.3.2, according to the European Commission. That means a competent authority in another EU or EEA country cannot re-examine the substance of the training; it checks the paperwork and registers the graduate.
The European Commission's own guidance, most recently updated through a 2023 delegated act adjusting Annex V, sets the automatic-recognition threshold at five years of full-time theoretical and practical study totalling at least 5,000 hours, matching every one of the four programmes above. A national authority must acknowledge a completed application within one month and issue a decision within three months. The process is straightforward. Graduates from outside the EU or EEA follow separate national licensing routes in their home country, which exist as a matter of course and are worth mapping out early rather than late.
What does five years of dentistry in Hungary actually cost, all in?
Take a concrete case: a student starting dentistry at Semmelweis University, Budapest, in September 2026, renting a room outside the city centre for the full five years.
| Item | Five-year total |
|---|---|
| Tuition, $20,900 × 5 years | $104,500 |
| Clinical materials, Years 2–5 | $17,500 |
| Application, enrollment and starter kit (one-off) | $930 |
| Rent, food and transport, 5 years | $47,580 |
| Health insurance where not bundled into tuition, 5 years | $3,000 |
| Total, five years | ≈$173,500 |
Spread over five years and roughly forty-four months of active study, that comes to about $3,290 a month, all costs included. Tuition is the largest single line by far. Materials cost less. Living costs come second, ahead of everything else.
What do most cost breakdowns of dentistry in Hungary leave out?
Three things rarely make it into a tuition comparison. First, summer clinical practice: Szeged's own fee page states plainly that it is excluded from tuition, and similar practical placements at the other three universities carry their own small local costs. Second, international wire fees: a bank-to-bank transfer for tuition typically costs $25 to $50 each time, four times a year, which adds up over five years. Third, the cost of registering the finished degree once it is earned — apostille or legalisation of the diploma, certified translations, and the postage or courier fee for sending documents to a home-country licensing authority.
Small amounts add up. None of these numbers is large on its own, but together, across five years, they are worth a line in the budget rather than a surprise in Year 5. Current students and graduates describe their own version of this at /student-stories.
How does Medschool Experts help with the cost side of applying?
Every case is different. Fee schedules change from one intake to the next, and the exact figure a given applicant pays depends on the university, the year of entry and their individual academic background. Requirements and admission details vary by university and by profile, which is why Medschool Experts reviews each case directly rather than publishing a single number that fits everyone. Book a free individual consultation and the team will confirm current tuition, deposit and material-fee figures for the intake in question before any application goes in. The /services page covers what that support includes beyond the cost estimate itself.
The author's view
I studied dentistry in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 2015 to 2021, so I paid a materials bill of my own long before I ever sat behind a real patient. What strikes me about the Hungarian fee structures is how openly some of them state it. Semmelweis puts a number on the phantom-head lab and another, higher number on the clinical years. My own programme did the same in practice, just less on paper, and I would rather see it written down than discovered semester by semester.
The euro figure at Szeged, rising from around €14,000 to about €15,200 a year, sits close to what I remember paying in Bulgaria once local fees and materials were added up. Budapest costs noticeably more than that, mostly because Budapest itself costs more to live in, not because the degree is worth more. I would not let the tuition gap between the four universities decide the choice on its own. Rent, the phantom-head materials fee and the city you would actually enjoy living in for five years matter just as much.
What I would tell a student weighing these four options is the same thing I tell people who ask about my own path into Swiss practice: the degree gets recognised on its academic merits, not on which of these four cities issued it. I now practise in Bern with a Swiss licence built on a foreign dental degree, and the paperwork behind that recognition looked almost identical for a Hungarian Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry. Budget for the real number, not the marketing number, and the rest follows.
Summary
- Semmelweis University, Budapest, charges $20,900 a year in 2026, plus $1,250–$2,500 per semester in clinical materials from Year 2 onward.
- The University of Debrecen charges $17,500 a year in 2026, with materials already folded into tuition.
- The University of Szeged charges about €14,000 in Year 1 and roughly €15,200 in each following year, insurance included, summer practice excluded.
- The University of Pécs charges $17,350 a year in 2026, again with materials included in the headline fee.
- Monthly living costs in September and July 2026 data range from about $530 in Szeged to about $780 in Budapest, rent, food and transport combined.
- A five-year Hungarian dentistry degree qualifies for automatic recognition across the EU and EEA under Directive 2005/36/EC, once it meets the five-year, 5,000-hour threshold set out in Annex V.
- A full worked example at Semmelweis, living outside the city centre, comes to roughly $173,500 across five years, tuition included.
- The largest single cost is tuition; the second largest is rent, food and transport, not clinical materials.
Conclusion
None of the four universities is dramatically cheaper than the others once materials, fees and living costs sit next to tuition. The real planning question is which city, which fee structure and which cost rhythm suits a five-year commitment.
Fee schedules shift by intake and the right number for any one applicant depends on their year of entry and profile. Book a free consultation and Medschool Experts will confirm current figures for your case.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Cost of Studying Dentistry in Hungary
Does dentistry tuition in Hungary increase after the first year?
Not for tuition itself, at Debrecen, Pécs or Semmelweis, where the yearly rate published for 2026 entry holds for the length of the programme. Szeged is the exception: its first semester costs less than the following nine, because the standard fee structure only applies from semester two onward. What does rise is the material fee at Semmelweis, which steps up in Year 2 and again in Year 3, reflecting the move from lecture halls into the phantom-head lab and then into patient treatment.
Is health insurance included in Hungarian dentistry tuition?
At the University of Szeged, yes: the university states that its tuition includes general Hungarian health insurance for 2026 entrants. Semmelweis, Debrecen and Pécs publish tuition and fees without listing insurance as a bundled item, so a student there typically arranges statutory or private health cover separately, at a modest monthly cost. Confirming which model applies to a specific intake is worth doing before budgeting the first year, since the difference is a few hundred dollars annually either way.
Can dental students in Hungary work part-time to cover living costs?
International students on a Hungarian residence permit can generally take on limited part-time work alongside a full-time programme, though a five-year clinical degree leaves less free time from Year 3 onward than a purely classroom-based course. Common options include tutoring, translation work and administrative shifts at private dental clinics, which also builds familiarity with the local dental sector. Earnings from this kind of work rarely cover tuition, but they do meaningfully offset monthly rent and food costs.
Are scholarships or tuition discounts available for dentistry students in Hungary?
Some Hungarian universities offer merit-based reductions in later years tied to academic performance, and these vary by university, by intake and by individual record rather than following one published scale. Because the criteria and amounts are specific to each case, this is exactly the kind of question best answered directly rather than generically — a free individual consultation with Medschool Experts covers what is realistically available for a given applicant and university.
What extra costs come with the phantom-head and clinical years?
From the point a programme moves into hands-on simulation, most universities add a materials charge on top of tuition to cover instruments, consumables and the wear on shared equipment. At Semmelweis, that figure is $1,250 per semester in Year 2 and $2,500 per semester in Years 3 through 5, per the university's 2026 fee schedule. Debrecen and Pécs instead describe these costs as already folded into their single annual tuition figure, so the practical difference is which invoice the money arrives on, not whether it exists.
Does a Hungarian dental degree let me practise anywhere in the EU automatically?
Within the European Union and the European Economic Area, yes, once the degree meets Directive 2005/36/EC's Annex V threshold of five years and roughly 5,000 hours of study, which every one of the four Hungarian programmes covered here satisfies. A national authority in the country of destination has one month to acknowledge a completed application and three months to decide, and it cannot re-test the substance of the training itself. Graduates planning to practise outside the EU or EEA follow that country's own separate licensing process.
Can I transfer to a Hungarian dental programme with credits from another country's degree?
Yes, and Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist in credit-recognition placements for healthcare graduates, regularly achieving Year 4 or Year 5 entry at top universities worldwide for students who already hold relevant coursework. Every case turns on the specific credits, the specific university and the specific intake, so there is no single published rule to quote here. A free consultation is the fastest way to find out what your existing credits are worth at a Hungarian dental faculty.
How much should I budget for the move itself, beyond tuition and rent?
Beyond tuition, deposit and monthly rent, plan for a residence-permit fee, flights, a starter set of basic dental instruments for preclinical work, and an international transfer fee of roughly $25 to $50 each time tuition is paid, typically twice a year. None of these is large individually, but together they commonly add $1,000 to $2,000 to the first year that a tuition table alone will not show.
