Do international students pay tuition at Greek public medical faculties?

For the Greek-taught degree, no. The European Commission's Eurydice network records that the first cycle of Greek higher education is offered free of charge to all home and international students, with two named exceptions: the Hellenic Open University, and undergraduate programmes taught in a foreign language. Medicine at the public faculties is taught in Greek. It sits on the free side of that line.

Study in Greece, the state-backed information service for international applicants, says the same in plainer words in its 2026 undergraduate guidance: Greek-taught undergraduate programmes are offered for free, while English-taught bachelor programmes charge between EUR 5,000 and EUR 15,000 a year. That second band is what the European Commission's Study in Europe country profile for Greece describes when it quotes EUR 5,000 to EUR 15,000 for non-EU bachelor students. It is a fee for a language of instruction, not a fee for a nationality.

Admission is a separate matter from price. The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports runs its own annual admission route for foreign nationals, split into two categories: applicants who finished secondary school outside the European Union, and applicants who finished secondary school in an EU member state. Its published announcements for the 2026/27 cycle mention no tuition charge anywhere. Which universities in Greece teach medicine, and in what language?

Greece has seven public medical faculties. The five most often asked about are the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Patras, the University of Crete in Heraklion and the University of Ioannina; the University of Thessaly in Larissa and the Democritus University of Thrace in Alexandroupolis complete the list. All of them teach the regular six-year medical degree in Greek.

That is a plain fact about the curriculum, and a solvable one. Greek public universities run their own language schools for precisely this purpose — the School of Modern Greek Language at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has taught Greek to foreign students for decades, and comparable provision exists in Athens. Language preparation is a line in the budget and a line in the calendar. It is not a wall.

Alongside the Greek-taught faculties sit two English-taught medical programmes inside the Greek public system: the Medical Degree English Program at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and the Aristotle University School of Medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which offers 60 places to new students each academic year. What do the English-taught medical programmes in Greece cost in 2026?

Both publish a figure. The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens charges EUR 17,000 per academic year for 2026/27, which its fee page states is set in accordance with the Government Gazette of the Hellenic Republic. The Aristotle University School of Medicine charges EUR 12,000. Six years turn those into EUR 102,000 and EUR 72,000 of tuition.

The payment structure matters as much as the headline. Athens asks for a EUR 5,000 deposit, largely non-refundable, with the remaining EUR 12,000 in two instalments. Thessaloniki splits its EUR 12,000 evenly: EUR 6,000 on acceptance, EUR 6,000 at the end of the winter semester. Cash flow is what a family actually plans around.

How much does student housing cost in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and Heraklion?

Between roughly EUR 400 and EUR 545 a month, depending on the city. The property platform Spitogatos published a student-housing analysis for the second quarter of 2026 giving average asking rents of about EUR 543 in Athens, EUR 496 in Thessaloniki, EUR 449 in Heraklion, EUR 402 in Ioannina and EUR 398 in Patras. Nationally, asking prices for student accommodation were up 5.3% on the same quarter of 2025. Patras was flat.

Those are asking prices in listings, not signed leases. As a per-square-metre check, the same Spitogatos data for the second quarter of 2026 puts central Athens and central Thessaloniki both at about EUR 12.0 per square metre a month, against EUR 4.6 in Pella at the national bottom. A first-quarter 2026 cut shows western Athens at EUR 9.09 and the Thessaloniki suburbs at EUR 7.83 — the gap between a central room and a twenty-minute bus ride is real money over six years.

What does everything else cost each month?

The European Commission's Study in Europe profile for Greece puts total student living costs at EUR 700 to EUR 1,200 a month, covering housing, food, transport and personal spending. Set the Spitogatos rents against that band and the non-rent remainder in Patras or Ioannina lands around EUR 300 to EUR 800. Greek immigration rules give a second anchor: a non-EU student must show means of at least EUR 400 a month.

Food is where people misjudge Greece. Eurostat's 2025 price level indices place the country less than 20% below the EU average for household final consumption, so it is cheaper than Germany or the Netherlands without being cheap. Rent inflation is the sharper edge: the Hellenic Statistical Authority recorded annual inflation in actual rentals of 7.7% in May 2026, down from a peak of 11.4% in June 2025.

What do visas, permits and insurance add for a non-EU student?

Under Greek rules the fixed costs are small and predictable. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs guide for students prices a national type D visa at EUR 90 and a residence permit at EUR 150 per year; the international-student support service of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens adds EUR 16 for issuing the physical residence card and confirms the EUR 400 monthly means test. Six renewals, one visa. Just over a thousand euros in total.

Health cover is a requirement rather than a fee. The same guide sets out the minimum benefits a policy must carry: EUR 10,000 a year of public hospital care with a 20% co-payment, EUR 15,000 a year for permanent total or partial disability caused by an accident, and EUR 1,500 a year for medical expenses. Students from EU and EEA countries carry the European Health Insurance Card from home. Private premiums vary by insurer and age, so no single figure is quoted here.

What free support do Greek public universities give students?

More than most cost guides mention. The student welfare system at Greek public universities can remove two of the largest budget lines outright. The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens publishes the free-meals criteria: an annual family income ceiling of EUR 45,000 for an unmarried student, rising EUR 5,000 for each additional child, and EUR 25,000 of personal income for unmarried students over 25.

Thresholds tighten by 10% for students who are permanent residents of the city where they study, and lift by EUR 3,000 where a sibling is also an active undergraduate. Housing works similarly. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki states that undergraduates, postgraduates and doctoral candidates from large or low-income families are entitled to free accommodation in its Student Halls of Residence, allocated on social and economic criteria. Eurydice separately records a state accommodation grant of EUR 1,500 a year for first-cycle students studying away from home, for 2023/24.

What does six years actually add up to?

Take one modelled scenario and run it all the way through. Call it the Patras baseline: a non-EU student in the Greek-taught programme at the University of Patras, renting at the city's Q2 2026 student average and holding a residence permit for all six years. No welfare entitlement assumed. Every input is a published 2026 figure.

That works out at EUR 813 a month averaged across 72 months, which sits comfortably inside the European Commission's EUR 700 to EUR 1,200 band for Greece. Rent is 49% of it. Other living is 49%. Paperwork is under 2%.

Run the same structure through the fee-paying routes and the shape changes completely. Thessaloniki's English-taught programme at EUR 12,000 a year with rent at EUR 496 gives EUR 137,598 over six years. Athens at EUR 17,000 and EUR 543 gives EUR 170,982. The University of Nicosia at EUR 24,000, plus the EUR 12,000 a year it publishes as a living-cost minimum, gives EUR 216,000 before fixed extras.

One projection, clearly labelled as one: if student asking rents kept climbing at the 5.3% Spitogatos measured for the year to the second quarter of 2026, a EUR 398 room in Patras would be near EUR 515 by the sixth year. That is a forward projection, not a measurement, and no part of the totals above depends on it.

Is a Greek medical degree recognised across the European Union?

Yes, and by a specific legal mechanism rather than by reputation. EU directive 2005/36/EC grants automatic recognition to basic medical qualifications listed in its Annex V, point 5.1.1. The Greek qualification, the Ptychio Iatrikis awarded by a university medical school or medical department, is listed there with a reference date of 1 January 1981 — the year Greece joined what was then the European Communities.

Article 24 sets the substance behind that listing: basic medical training must comprise at least five years of study and a minimum of 5,500 hours of theoretical and practical training given by or under university supervision. Greek degrees run six years, above that floor. European Commission guidance sets the clock: the host country's competent authority must acknowledge an application within one month and decide within three.

Inside Greece, practising medicine means registering with the local medical association; the Panhellenic Medical Association is the national umbrella body those associations belong to. How does the English-taught route in Cyprus compare?

It is the closest English-language alternative geographically, and priced very differently. The University of Nicosia charges EUR 24,000 a year for its six-year Doctor of Medicine, applied equally to local, EU and international students. Around that sit an application fee of EUR 60, an administrative fee of EUR 1,500 taken from the first semester, and a refundable seat reservation deposit of EUR 3,500.

The extras are the part people miss. The University of Nicosia lists malpractice insurance at EUR 300 a year in years one to four and EUR 600 to EUR 1,250 in years five and six, personal accident insurance at EUR 50 a year, and clinical training supplements of EUR 6,000 for placements in the United Kingdom or the United States, or EUR 3,000 for Switzerland or Germany, in the final two years. International students pay a further EUR 150 for entry visa and alien registration, EUR 180 a year for health insurance and EUR 55 a year to renew the visa. Minimum living costs in Nicosia: EUR 12,000 a year, the university's own figure.

European University Cyprus runs a six-year, 360-ECTS Doctor of Medicine in English in Nicosia with an October 2026 intake, but does not publish the tuition figure on the programme page, so no amount is quoted here. Cyprus is an EU member state, so its medical qualifications fall under the same directive 2005/36/EC framework.

What do short cost guides usually leave out?

Four things, consistently. The first is the language split — a guide that quotes one number for "Greece" has averaged a EUR 0 Greek-taught place with a EUR 17,000 English-taught place, and the average describes nobody. The second is the welfare system. Free meals and free halls of residence are worth thousands of euros a year to a student who qualifies, and they run on published income thresholds rather than on discretion.

The third is time. A six-year degree buys six years of rent inflation, and Greek rents have been moving: 7.7% annual growth in actual rentals in May 2026 per the Hellenic Statistical Authority, 5.3% in student asking prices in the second quarter of 2026 per Spitogatos. A budget built on year-one rent understates year six. The fourth is the payment calendar. A EUR 17,000 annual fee opening with a EUR 5,000 largely non-refundable deposit is a different commitment from the same number paid in twelve pieces.
