What does it cost to study medicine in Poland in 2026?

Studying medicine in English in Poland in 2026 costs between EUR 14,830 and EUR 18,800 a year in tuition, depending on which faculty you attend, plus EUR 1,160 to EUR 1,660 a month to live alone in the university cities. Across the full six-year degree that is roughly EUR 162,000 to EUR 234,000, tuition and living combined.

That spread is wide because two variables move independently. Tuition is set by each faculty and barely moves once you have enrolled. Living costs are set by the city, and the gap between Lublin and Warsaw is large enough to change the total by more than fifty thousand euros over six years.

How much is tuition at each Polish medical faculty in 2026/27?

Tuition for English-taught Medicine in Poland in the 2026/27 academic year runs from 64,200 złoty at the Medical University of Gdańsk to EUR 18,800 at the Medical University of Warsaw. Six faculties publish their figures openly, and each one quotes in the currency it actually bills in — euro, US dollar or złoty.

Two of those tables have a shape worth noticing. Poznan University of Medical Sciences raises the fee after year two, from PLN 71,000 to PLN 85,750, and publishes the whole six-year commitment as PLN 485,000 up front. The Medical University of Łódź runs the other way, charging EUR 15,100 in the first year and EUR 14,900 in each of the five that follow. Everyone else holds one number flat.

The Jagiellonian University Medical College publishes its history alongside its current fee, which makes the drift visible: EUR 14,500 in 2021/22, EUR 15,000 in 2022/23 and 2023/24, EUR 15,500 in 2024/25 and 2025/26, and EUR 16,000 for 2026/27. That is roughly ten per cent over five years.

Why do Polish medical faculties quote tuition in three different currencies?

Polish medical faculties bill international students in euro, US dollars or złoty depending on the faculty, and in 2026 all three appear among the six largest English-taught programmes. This cuts both ways, and it is not a reason to prefer one faculty over another. It is a reason to know which currency you are committing to before you sign, and to hold the money for at least the next instalment in that currency where you can. Students billed in US dollars by the Medical University of Lublin are exposed to the dollar, not the złoty, even though they live and spend in Poland.

Polish medical education is built around a six-year long-cycle degree entered after secondary school, and that is the programme all six faculties published 2026/27 fees for. Poznan University of Medical Sciences heads its student fee pages explicitly as the six-year MD programme. The Jagiellonian University Medical College lists only the six-year MD in its fee history. Gdańsk, Lublin and Łódź publish semester or annual figures across years one to six.

The Medical University of Warsaw fee order for 2026/27 is the one that shows a second programme alongside medicine. It lists the six-year long-cycle medicine degree at EUR 18,800 a year, EUR 112,800 in total, and a second long-cycle programme at EUR 20,900 a year totalling EUR 104,500 — five years of fees rather than six, at a higher annual rate.

What does it cost to live in Kraków, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Poznań and Lublin in 2026?

Living in a Polish university city in 2026 costs between PLN 5,012 and PLN 7,184 a month for a student renting alone, which is EUR 1,158 to EUR 1,660 at the European Central Bank rate of 31 August 2026. Lublin is the cheapest of the five medical cities and Warsaw the most expensive, with Kraków, Gdańsk and Poznań between them.

The last column is Numbeo's estimate of what one person spends in a month with rent excluded — food, transport, utilities, phone and everyday spending together. Add it to a rent figure from the same row and you have a realistic monthly budget for that city in 2026.

Rent is where the cities separate. Everything else is close: a monthly transport pass costs between PLN 110 in Warsaw and PLN 132 in Kraków, a gap of about five euros. Warsaw actually has the cheapest transport pass of the five. Utilities for a large flat run between PLN 1,141.72 in Gdańsk and PLN 1,380.12 in Warsaw, and a cheap restaurant meal is PLN 35 in Lublin against PLN 48.50 in Kraków.

Health insurance is the small line most budgets forget. That is roughly PLN 75 a month, or PLN 5,400 across six years.

What one-off costs does the first year in Poland add?

The first year of medical study in Poland in 2026 carries government and university charges that never repeat in the same form. The residence formalities are the ones set by the Polish state: PLN 340 in stamp duty for a temporary residence permit and PLN 100 for the residence card itself, PLN 440 together, which is about EUR 102.

Both figures come from the Polish authorities rather than from any university. The Office for Foreigners applies a fifty per cent reduction on the card fee for foreigners studying in higher education, so the card can come to PLN 50 rather than PLN 100. University one-off charges sit on top and vary by faculty. The Medical University of Warsaw takes an application fee of EUR 20 to EUR 24 and a confirmation fee of EUR 1,000 which counts towards tuition but is not refundable. The Medical University of Łódź charges an application fee of EUR 24. The Medical University of Lublin charges PLN 100, about EUR 23. The Medical University of Gdańsk adds an orientation week fee of PLN 3,100, reduced to PLN 2,050 for candidates from Poland and for graduates of its own premedical course.

What does a full Polish medical degree cost from start to finish?

A complete six-year medical degree in Poland in 2026 comes to about EUR 177,400 for a student at the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków who shares a flat, counting tuition, rent, food, transport, health insurance and residence formalities. Change one assumption and the total moves in a way you can predict. If Ana lives alone rather than sharing, her rent doubles and the degree reaches about EUR 201,700. If she studies in Lublin and shares, the same six years come to roughly EUR 161,600. If she studies in Warsaw and lives alone, about EUR 233,700. Which Polish city gives the lowest total cost of a medical degree in 2026?

Lublin is the cheapest place to take a Polish medical degree in 2026 on both halves of the bill at once, and Warsaw the most expensive. The Medical University of Lublin charges USD 18,240 a year, about EUR 15,730, and Lublin has the lowest rents and the lowest everyday costs of the five medical cities.

Poznań shows why tuition alone decides nothing. Gdańsk runs the opposite way and comes out well. Its tuition is the lowest of the six faculties at EUR 14,834 a year, and although rents on the Baltic coast are the second highest of the five cities, the fee advantage is larger than the rent penalty — the degree lands about EUR 8,200 below Kraków and EUR 34,000 below Warsaw.

What recognition does a Polish medical degree carry after graduation?

Poland has been a member state of the European Union since 2004, so a medical degree awarded by a Polish university carries automatic recognition across the European Union and the European Economic Area under EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications. Medicine is one of the sectoral professions the directive covers, which means the qualification is recognised on the strength of the diploma itself.

That is the shortest route a Polish graduate has, and it is genuinely short. A graduate who wants to practise in Ireland, Sweden, Spain or any other member state registers under the directive rather than sitting a separate equivalence examination. National language requirements and registration procedures still apply, and they are set by each country's own medical council.

Outside the Union the routes are the established ones.
