How Much Does It Cost to Study Medicine in Turkey? 2026 Figures
05.09.2026
How much does a medical degree in Turkey cost in total in 2026?
Between roughly 130,000 and 212,000 euros for the full six years, living costs included, if you start from the published 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 fee tables. The state route sits at the lower end, the foundation route at the upper end. Tuition is the only part that changes dramatically between them, because rent, food and transport cost the same either way.
The gap is structural. State universities charge international students a tuition figure fixed centrally each year and published programme by programme. Foundation universities, private but non-profit and governed by a board of trustees, set their own annual fee and revise it every spring. Istanbul University asked 10,000 US dollars a year of international medical students entering from 2024-2025 onward. Koc University asked 59,000 for 2025-2026. Same country, same six years, same degree.
What do Turkish state universities charge international medical students in 2026?
Most of them now publish the international tuition figure in US dollars, in a table released in July or August, and convert it to lira at the central bank selling rate on one named day. Istanbul University used 40.50 lira to the dollar on 23 July 2025 to turn its 10,000-dollar medicine fee into 405,000 lira for 2025-2026. Half falls due in autumn, half in spring.
That date matters. The figures below are what each university published for new international entrants. Ankara University charges half as much again for English-taught medicine as for the Turkish programme, and Marmara University still quotes in lira, which changes the whole risk picture.
| State university | Programme | Published annual fee | Year published | EUR equivalent, 4 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul University | Medicine, Turkish | USD 10,000 | 2025-2026 | 8,600 EUR |
| Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa | Medicine, Turkish | USD 12,000 | 2025-2026 | 10,300 EUR |
| Ankara University | Medicine, Turkish | USD 11,000 | 2025-2026 | 9,500 EUR |
| Ankara University | Medicine, English | USD 16,500 | 2025-2026 | 14,200 EUR |
| Ege University, Izmir | Medicine, Turkish | USD 10,000 | 2024-2025 | 8,600 EUR |
| Marmara University, Istanbul | Medicine | TRY 355,429 | 2025-2026 | 6,300 EUR |
Hacettepe University in Ankara works the same way, releasing its fee list faculty by faculty before each autumn term. Read the current list, not a cached number. The same applies to Ege University, where the 10,000-dollar fee above is the 2024-2025 figure. Our overview of the universities we work with follows these tables as they are reissued.
What do foundation universities charge, and why is the gap so wide?
They carry their own teaching hospitals, pay market salaries and teach in English to small cohorts, so they price accordingly. Medicine at the best-known foundation faculties runs from roughly 27,500 to 59,000 US dollars a year. The degree title is identical. What differs is class size, the language of instruction, the campus and the clinical network attached.
These are the published annual figures. Where a university discounts a year paid in full rather than in instalments, both prices are shown.
| Foundation university | Programme | Published annual fee | Year published | EUR equivalent, 4 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koc University, Istanbul | School of Medicine | USD 59,000 | 2025-2026 | 50,800 EUR |
| Yeditepe University, Istanbul | Faculty of Medicine | USD 45,000, VAT included | 2026-2027 | 38,700 EUR |
| Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, Istanbul | Medicine, English | USD 36,000, VAT included | 2026-2027 | 31,000 EUR |
| Baskent University, Ankara | Faculty of Medicine | TRY 1,480,000 | 2025-2026 | 26,300 EUR |
| Istinye University, Istanbul | Medicine, English | USD 29,000 in instalments; USD 27,550 paid in full | 2026-2027 | 25,000 / 23,700 EUR |
| Istinye University, Istanbul | Medicine, Turkish | USD 23,000 in instalments; USD 21,850 paid in full | 2026-2027 | 19,800 / 18,800 EUR |
Two details there are easy to skim past and expensive to miss. Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University and Yeditepe University both state that value added tax is already inside the published price, which is not universal in Turkey. Istinye University adds 15 percent when a year is paid in instalments rather than one transfer, which is why its two prices differ by 1,450 dollars. Across six years that is about 8,700 dollars.
Baskent University is the outlier because it prices in lira. Its medicine and dentistry fee was set at 1,480,000 lira for 2025-2026, a rise that made national news in Turkey that summer.
Does your fee move with the dollar or with the lira?
Check that before you compare any two Turkish universities. A dollar-denominated fee and a lira-denominated fee behave completely differently across a six-year degree, and the difference is invisible in a first-year price comparison. The flow below is the test to run on every fee page you open.
Do you need a Turkish preparatory year, and what does it cost?
You need one if the programme is taught in Turkish and you do not already hold a Turkish language certificate at the level the university asks for. That year is spent at a language teaching centre, usually the university's own, and it adds a seventh year to the degree. English-taught programmes at Ankara University, Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University, Yeditepe University and Istinye University remove the question entirely.
Tuition dwarfs it. A state language centre package covering A1 through C1 across 960 hours was priced at 90,000 lira at Eskisehir Osmangazi University for courses starting after 1 August 2025, around 1,600 euros at September 2026 rates. Foundation universities fold the year into their own fee list: Istinye University published 3,000 US dollars for its Turkish preparatory year for 2026-2027 and 8,000 for the English one, and Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University listed 5,500 for its preparatory school, with scholarships explicitly not applying to it.
Budget the living costs of that year as well. Twelve months of rent and food in Istanbul is the larger number by a wide margin, not the course fee.
What does a medical student actually spend per month in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir?
Between about 800 and 950 euros a month in 2026, sharing a flat, across all three cities. Istanbul is the most expensive and Izmir the cheapest, but the spread is narrower than the reputation gap suggests. Rent is what separates them. Food, transport and utilities land close to identical.
The table uses Numbeo city data from August and September 2026, converted at 56.30 lira to the euro. The shared-flat column assumes you split a one-bedroom flat outside the centre with one other person.
| City | Monthly costs without rent, 2026 | One-bed flat outside centre, 2026 | Shared-flat monthly total | Per year, EUR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul | TRY 37,681 | TRY 31,313 | TRY 53,338 (947 EUR) | 11,360 EUR |
| Ankara | TRY 33,378 | TRY 26,676 | TRY 46,716 (830 EUR) | 9,960 EUR |
| Izmir | TRY 34,844 | TRY 21,042 | TRY 45,365 (806 EUR) | 9,670 EUR |
Two levers push those numbers down. State university dormitories and the national student housing network cost a fraction of private rent, the biggest saving a first-year student can make. An Istanbul monthly transport pass ran at 3,298 lira in September 2026, roughly 59 euros, against 600 lira in Ankara, so where you live inside a city matters nearly as much as which city you pick. Students describe these trade-offs better than any table can in our student stories.
What do health insurance and the residence permit add each year?
Very little, which surprises people who have costed study in Western Europe. Turkey's general health insurance scheme, the genel saglik sigortasi, was priced at around 183 lira a month for international students on the 2026 student rate, roughly 2,196 lira a year, or about 39 euros for twelve months of cover at state and contracted hospitals with modest co-payments.
The numbers are small. The 2026 residence permit card fee was 964 lira, about 17 euros, and students enrolled in a degree programme at a Turkish university are exempt from the permit tax other applicants pay. Language course students at a standalone preparatory centre are not exempt, worth knowing before you plan a Turkish preparatory year outside a university structure.
Private international cover, if you want private hospitals and English-speaking care, ran between 20 and 50 euros a month in 2026. Either option satisfies the insurance requirement for the residence permit.
What does the full six-year bill come to when you add it up?
Around 129,700 euros for a Turkish-taught state route with a preparatory year in front of it, and around 211,900 euros for an English-taught foundation route in Istanbul. Both are itemised below so you can swap in your own city, university and housing choice. Tuition is the lever. Neither figure includes flights home.
Sample budget A is the state route: one Turkish preparatory year, then six years of Turkish-taught medicine at Ankara University, in a shared flat.
| Sample budget A — Ankara University, Turkish programme, seven years | Calculation | EUR |
|---|---|---|
| Turkish preparatory year, language centre package | TRY 90,000 once, 2025 price | 1,600 |
| Tuition, medicine | USD 11,000 x 6 years, 2025-2026 rate | 56,800 |
| Living in Ankara, shared flat | 9,960 EUR x 7 years, 2026 rate | 69,720 |
| Health insurance, state scheme | TRY 2,196 x 7 years, 2026 rate | 275 |
| Residence permit card fee | TRY 964 x 7 renewals, 2026 rate | 120 |
| Setup, deposit, books, equipment | Allowance across the whole degree | 1,200 |
| Total | Seven academic years | 129,715 |
Sample budget B swaps university and city: six years of English-taught medicine at Istinye University in Istanbul, paid in full each year to avoid the surcharge, in a shared flat. Tuition of 27,550 dollars a year comes to about 142,200 euros, Istanbul living at 11,360 euros a year adds 68,160, and insurance, permit and setup add roughly 1,500. That lands at about 211,900 euros with no preparatory year inside it.
The distance between the two budgets is 82,000 euros, almost all of it tuition. Move budget A to Izmir and it falls by another 2,000. Move budget B into a university dormitory and it falls further still.
{{cta}}When does each payment actually fall due?
Not all at once, and not evenly. Turkish universities split tuition across two semesters, publish next year's price in mid-summer and fix the lira conversion on a named day. Knowing that calendar keeps a bank transfer from arriving late, and a late payment can hold up registration.
The calendar is fixed. A short checklist for year one, with the months attached:
- July to August: the fee table appears and the university names the day it converts dollars into lira. Save that page as a PDF.
- Late August to September: autumn semester tuition, plus a rent deposit of commonly one or two months.
- First month after arrival: the residence permit application and its card fee, 964 lira in 2026.
- Within three months of the permit: enrolment in the state health insurance scheme, 183 lira a month in 2026.
- January to February: spring semester tuition, the second half of the annual fee.
- Every following July: re-check the fee table, because the number moves.
The practical arrangements around that, from the housing search to the order the paperwork happens in, sit inside our placement service.
What does most cost coverage of studying in Turkey leave out?
The conversion date. A euro figure for Turkish medical tuition means little without three things beside it: the rate it was calculated at, the day it was calculated, and the currency the university actually charges in. Leave those out and one fee can look like 6,300 euros or 9,000 euros depending on when someone did the sum.
Marmara University is the concrete version of that. Its 355,429 lira medicine fee for 2025-2026 was worth roughly 8,300 euros at the rate around September 2025, and about 6,300 euros at the European Central Bank reference rate of 56.2995 lira to the euro on 4 September 2026. The lira number never moved. The euro number fell by a quarter.
The fix is simple. Write the fee down in the currency the university prints, put the exchange rate and the date beside it, and redo the conversion every July when the new table appears. Do that and a Turkish medical degree becomes as predictable to plan as any other.
The other thing that falls out of most totals is the preparatory year. Six years of tuition is not the whole degree if a language year comes first, and dropping it understates the total by a full year of living costs. In Ankara that is close to 10,000 euros.
Where does a Turkish medical degree stand after you graduate?
Turkish medical faculties are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the joint register operated by the World Federation for Medical Education and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research. Accreditation inside Turkey is run by TEPDAD, the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs, which the World Federation for Medical Education recognises. Both facts are checkable in the directory entry for an individual faculty, and that entry is what to read.
For the United States the route runs through ECFMG certification, administered by Intealth. Eligibility is governed by the ECFMG Sponsor Note in a school's World Directory of Medical Schools entry, which states whether that school's students and graduates may apply. Intealth treats the Recognized Accreditation policy and ECFMG eligibility as separate matters, so open the entry for the specific faculty you are weighing up and read its sponsor note before you commit six years. From there the USMLE sequence works for a Turkish graduate exactly as for any other international medical graduate.
The European Union sits outside the automatic system for Turkey. Directive 2005/36/EC grants automatic recognition to basic medical qualifications obtained in an EU or EEA member state or in Switzerland, and Turkey is none of those. A Turkish degree is therefore assessed under each member state's own procedure for qualifications from outside the Union, comparing the curriculum against the national standard, testing language, and in many states adding a knowledge examination. Thousands of doctors take that route every year. It is a procedure with published steps.
The United Kingdom, Australia and the Gulf states each run their own registration route, through the General Medical Council, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and their national counterparts. What every one of those regulators wants first is a primary medical qualification from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Turkish faculties clear that bar.
How do you find out whether a place in Turkey is realistic for you?
By having someone read your actual profile, rather than a threshold on a page. Profiles differ. Entry requirements in Turkey vary by university, by programme, by language of instruction and by the country your school-leaving certificate comes from, and one applicant can be a straightforward case at one faculty and a more involved one at another.
Book a free individual consultation and Medschool Experts will assess your case directly: which Turkish faculties suit your profile, what the current fee table says for the year you would start, whether a preparatory year applies to you, and what the total looks like with your own city and housing inside it. It costs nothing, and it replaces a great deal of guessing.
The author's view
I studied dentistry in Sofia between 2015 and 2021, and the thing nobody warned me about was not the exams. It was the budgeting. Bulgaria priced my degree in euros, so at least my arithmetic held still. Turkey does not offer that comfort by default, and a student who writes down one euro figure in March and plans six years around it is going to be surprised in July. Write the fee in the currency the university prints. Put the date next to it. That one habit is worth more than any comparison table I could give you.
I practise as a licensed dentist in Bern now, and what strikes me looking at these Turkish numbers is how much degree you get for the state price. Ten thousand dollars a year buys you six years inside a hospital like the one attached to Istanbul University, with patient volume that a small Western European faculty cannot match. My own clinical confidence came from volume, not from tuition. If your Turkish is willing to go the distance, the Turkish-taught route at a state faculty is, in pure value terms, one of the better deals in European medicine right now.
Having placed over 500 study places, the pattern I see most often is people ruling themselves out on the basis of a number they read somewhere. A fee that looks impossible at one Turkish university is often 30,000 euros lower at another with the same directory listing and the same recognition path. A half-hour conversation sorts that out, and it costs nothing.
Summary
- A six-year medical degree in Turkey costs roughly 130,000 to 212,000 euros all in, based on the fee tables published for 2025-2026 and 2026-2027.
- State universities mostly quote in US dollars: 10,000 at Istanbul University, 11,000 at Ankara University for the Turkish programme and 16,500 for the English one, all 2025-2026.
- Marmara University still prices in lira, 355,429 for 2025-2026, which behaves very differently inside a euro budget.
- Foundation fees run from 27,550 US dollars a year at Istinye University to 59,000 at Koc University, with Acibadem Mehmet Ali Aydinlar University at 36,000 and Yeditepe University at 45,000 for 2026-2027.
- A Turkish preparatory year applies only to Turkish-taught programmes, from about 1,600 euros at a state language centre to 3,000 US dollars at Istinye University.
- Sharing a flat cost about 947 euros a month in Istanbul, 830 in Ankara and 806 in Izmir in 2026.
- State health insurance was about 2,196 lira a year and the residence permit card fee 964 lira in 2026, with degree students exempt from the permit tax.
- Turkish medical faculties are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and TEPDAD, the national accreditor, is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education.
Conclusion
Turkey is one of the few places where a fully accredited six-year medical degree at a large public teaching hospital still costs under 10,000 euros a year in tuition, with an English-taught alternative a tram ride away for those who want it. The arithmetic is manageable once you write every fee down in the currency the university prints and date the conversion.
Which of the two markets fits you depends on your language plan, your budget horizon and where you intend to practise afterwards, and that is a conversation rather than a table. Book a free consultation and Medschool Experts will go through the current fee tables with your profile in front of us.
Frequently Asked Questions about the cost of studying medicine in Turkey
Is medicine cheaper at a Turkish state university than at a foundation university?
Substantially. Istanbul University published 10,000 US dollars a year for international medical students entering from 2024-2025, and Ankara University 11,000 for its Turkish-taught programme in 2025-2026. Koc University published 59,000 for 2025-2026 and Yeditepe University 45,000 for 2026-2027. Across six years that difference runs to roughly 82,000 euros before living costs, the largest variable in any Turkish medicine budget.
Why do Turkish universities quote tuition in US dollars?
Because it protects both sides from lira movement across a six-year commitment. A university that fixes a dollar figure converts it once a year at the central bank selling rate on a named day. Istanbul University used 40.50 lira to the dollar on 23 July 2025, producing 405,000 lira for 2025-2026. Universities that still price in lira, such as Marmara University and Baskent University, reset the figure each summer.
Does the Turkish preparatory year add a whole extra year to the degree?
Yes, when the programme is taught in Turkish and you do not already hold the certificate the university asks for. Medicine then runs seven academic years rather than six. The course is cheap by comparison, around 1,600 euros for a full A1 to C1 package at a state language centre in 2025, but the extra year of rent and food is the real cost.
What did living costs come to in Turkish cities in 2026?
Using Numbeo city data from August and September 2026 and a shared one-bedroom flat outside the centre, a student needed about 53,338 lira a month in Istanbul, 46,716 in Ankara and 45,365 in Izmir. Converted at the European Central Bank rate of 56.30 lira to the euro on 4 September 2026, that is 947, 830 and 806 euros. University dormitories cut the housing half of those figures sharply.
How much is health insurance and the residence permit for a student in Turkey?
Modest. The state health insurance scheme was priced at around 183 lira a month for international students on the 2026 student rate, roughly 2,196 lira a year. The residence permit card fee was 964 lira in 2026, and degree students are exempt from the permit tax other applicants pay. Private international cover ran between 20 and 50 euros a month in 2026.
Is a Turkish medical degree recognised in the European Union?
It is assessed rather than automatically recognised. Directive 2005/36/EC gives automatic recognition to basic medical qualifications from EU and EEA member states and Switzerland, and Turkey is outside that group. Each member state runs its own procedure for third-country qualifications, comparing the curriculum against the national standard, testing language, and in many states adding a knowledge examination. The route is established and used every year.
Can a Turkish medical graduate sit the USMLE and work in the United States?
Yes, through ECFMG certification, which Intealth administers. What decides eligibility is the ECFMG Sponsor Note in that medical school's entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so the entry for the specific faculty is what to check before enrolling. Turkish faculties appear in the directory, and TEPDAD, the national accreditor, is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education.
Does paying tuition in one transfer instead of instalments save money?
At some universities, clearly. Istinye University published 29,000 US dollars a year for English-taught medicine in 2026-2027 when paid in instalments and 27,550 when settled in one transfer, a difference of 1,450 dollars. Across six years that is roughly 8,700 dollars. Not every Turkish university offers the discount, so read the payment conditions on the fee page.
