Working as a Healthcare Assistant While Studying Nursing in Europe

Working as a Healthcare Assistant While Studying Nursing in Europe

A nursing student who wants to work on a ward for money, while also training on a ward for credit, is dealing with two rulebooks at once. One is immigration law, which counts days or hours. The other is the curriculum, which counts supervised practice toward a qualification. They do not talk to each other, and assuming that they do is what costs students a permit renewal.

The numbers are published. Germany allows 140 full days or 280 half days of paid work a year under § 16b of the Aufenthaltsgesetz. Ireland allows 20 hours a week in term and 40 in the fixed holiday windows. The United Kingdom allows 20 at degree level, counted Monday to Sunday. Each figure sits inside a different legal machine, with its own definition of a week, its own social insurance thresholds, and its own idea of what a healthcare assistant may touch.

Written for the student who has a place, has a permit, and wants to know how much paid ward work fits inside it — statute named, authority named, year attached to every figure.

How many days a year can an international student work in Germany?

A non-EU student holding a residence permit for study purposes may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year in Germany, and on top of that may take student assistant work at the university with no day limit at all. The rule is § 16b of the Aufenthaltsgesetz, the German Residence Act. The immigration offices of Munich and Leipzig both publish the quota in exactly those terms for 2026.

Days, not hours. A shift of up to four hours counts as a half day; anything longer counts as a full day. So a five-hour shift and a twelve-hour shift cost the same single day of the quota, and the long one pays more than twice as much. And studentische Nebentätigkeit — a Hilfskraft contract with the university itself, with a scientific institution, a student housing body or the student union — sits outside the quota entirely, which both authorities state expressly. The Ausländerbehörde counts when the permit comes up for extension. Keep the rosters.

What is a half day, and what does the Werkstudentenprivileg save?

German administrative practice treats a working day of up to four hours as a half day and anything longer as a full day, the four-hour line published by the Munich and Leipzig immigration offices for 2026. The 20-hour rule students hear about is a different animal: social insurance law, not immigration law, and it counts hours where the permit counts days.

Under the Werkstudentenprivileg, an enrolled student whose studies remain the main occupation, working no more than 20 hours a week during the lecture period, is exempt from statutory health, long-term care and unemployment contributions. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung sets out the exemption in precisely those three branches. Pension is the one that stays. The employee share is 9.3 per cent, half of the 18.6 per cent total contribution rate. Work above 20 hours a week keeps the exemption when it falls at evenings, nights and weekends or in the lecture-free period, subject to a limit of 26 weeks. Breaks are where the money is. German lecture periods run about fourteen weeks each, leaving free stretches from mid-February to mid-April and mid-July to early October.

What is the minijob threshold in Germany in 2026?

€603 a month. The German Geringfügigkeitsgrenze is no longer a fixed figure: it is derived from the statutory minimum wage, at that wage times 130 divided by three. The Federal Government put the statutory minimum wage at €13.90 an hour from 1 January 2026, rising to €14.60 from 1 January 2027, and the minijob threshold moved with it — €556 a month in 2025, €603 in 2026. From €603.01 to €2,000 a month sits the midi-job band, where contributions phase in gradually rather than landing all at once.

Read that again if you are planning around it: there is no earnings cap in the Werkstudentenprivileg. A student on full shifts through a long break can earn past both thresholds and still owe only pension, because the privilege tracks hours and enrolment, not pay.

How many hours can a student work in Ireland during term and the holidays?

A non-EEA student in Ireland holding Stamp 2 permission may work 20 hours a week during term time and 40 hours a week during the holiday periods, which Irish Immigration Service Delivery fixes as June, July, August and September, and 15 December to 15 January. Those are calendar dates set centrally, not the university's own timetable.

The difference matters for a nursing student, because a semester can finish in late May while the 40-hour window opens on 1 June regardless of when teaching stopped. One thing to check before signing anything: Citizens Information states that Stamp 2A carries no work permission at all. The stamp on the card, not the course, decides.

How many hours can a student on a UK Student visa work in term time?

Twenty hours a week at degree level or above; ten hours a week below degree level. Outside term time — vacations, and the period after the course formally ends while the visa still runs — full-time work is allowed. The condition is set by the Home Office and applied through sponsoring universities, whose immigration services publish the working definition: UK Visas and Immigration counts a week as Monday to Sunday.

Averaging is not allowed. Twenty-five hours one week and fifteen the next is a breach even though the average is twenty. That is the commonest error among students on NHS bank shifts, which are booked ad hoc and can bunch. Three things the visa does not permit: self-employment, freelance or gig work; professional sport or work as a professional entertainer; and a permanent full-time contract. A bank contract with an NHS trust is fine.

What is a healthcare assistant called in Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom?

Titles vary; the work does not — washing, feeding, mobilising, positioning, observations, ward stock. Germany uses Pflegehelfer and Pflegehilfskraft, and the sector's own minimum wage ordinance splits the grade in two: assistants without a qualifying course, and qualified assistants who have completed a one-year one. German hospitals routinely employ nursing students as supervised assistants, which is the normal way in part-way through a degree. What a student may not do is fixed by the Pflegeberufegesetz, which reserves assessment of care needs, planning of the nursing process and its evaluation to registered nurses.

In the United Kingdom the role is healthcare assistant, graded on the Agenda for Change scale, and employers train new starters in post rather than demanding a qualification up front. Ireland uses the same title, with the Health Service Executive and private providers recruiting into it directly. The teaching hospitals attached to the faculties listed under universities are the first employer worth asking, because they already host the placements and already know the programme.

Do nursing placement hours count as work under immigration rules?

No. Clinical placement forming part of an accredited nursing programme is education, not employment, and consumes no part of the paid-work allowance attached to a student permit. The hours belong to the curriculum, and no employment contract sits behind them.

The volume is fixed by European law. Article 31 of Directive 2005/36/EC requires training for nurses responsible for general care to run at least three years and cover at least 4,600 hours of theoretical and clinical instruction, with theory at least one third of that total and clinical instruction at least one half. At least half of 4,600 hours is at least 2,300 hours on a ward, and that is the real constraint on a nursing student's year — not the immigration ceiling, which most students never come close to spending. Placement weeks are exhausting. Stacking paid shifts on one is how people fail modules.

What does a healthcare assistant actually get paid?

In England, healthcare assistant posts sit at Agenda for Change band 2, and band 3 where the role carries extra clinical responsibility. The 2026/27 scales published by NHS Employers, effective 1 April 2026, set band 2 at a single point of £25,272 a year and band 3 from £25,760 to £27,476. Bank rates are drawn from the same scales, which is why a bank shift and a contracted shift on the same ward pay the same base.

German assistant pay has a floor specific to the sector, and it moved this summer. The nursing minimum wage is set by ordinance on the recommendation of the Pflegekommission, and the seventh Pflegearbeitsbedingungenverordnung took effect on 1 July 2026 and runs to 30 September 2028. From 1 July 2026 it sets €16.52 an hour for assistants without a qualifying course, €17.80 for qualified assistants holding a one-year course, and €21.03 for registered nurses. The previous step, from 1 July 2025, was €16.10, €17.35 and €20.50. A further rise is already fixed for 1 July 2027, at €16.95, €18.26 and €21.58. All of it sits well above the general statutory minimum wage of €13.90 an hour in 2026, and public hospitals pay above the sector floor again under their collective agreements.

Nights pay more. Unsocial-hours supplements are standard in both systems, and a student who is free when lectures are not running is exactly who a ward manager wants on a Sunday.

What can a nursing student earn in Germany in one year within the 140-day limit?

Here is the arithmetic, itemised, at the maximum the permit allows and at the sector pay floor. Call it the 140-day model, Germany, 2026.

Days and hours. Two eight-hour shifts a week across two fourteen-week lecture periods is 56 full days; five shifts a week across sixteen weeks of lecture-free time is 80. Total 136 days — four inside the ceiling, deliberately — or 1,088 hours.

Gross pay. 1,088 hours at €16.52, the sector minimum for assistants without a qualifying course from 1 July 2026, is €17,973.76. Night and weekend supplements sit on top and are not counted here.

Social insurance. Under the Werkstudentenprivileg only the employee half of pension applies, 9.3 per cent of gross, or €1,671.56. That leaves €16,302.20.

Income tax. The Grundfreibetrag for 2026 is €12,348, up €252 on the €12,096 that applied in 2025. Earnings above the allowance are taxable, so a year run at this intensity does produce a tax bill; a student working a lighter pattern stays under the allowance altogether and pays nothing. Wage tax withheld on uneven monthly earnings is commonly recovered in part through the annual return.

Against living costs. The German Federal Foreign Office sets the sum a student must show for a visa at €992 a month, or €11,904 for the year, the figure its missions published for 2025. The model produces more than a third above that benchmark.

The 20-hour lecture rule holds throughout, since two shifts a week is sixteen hours, and sixteen weeks of full-time break work sits under the 26-week limit. That is a lot of work, though. 136 days on top of a full clinical programme is the legal maximum, not a recommendation. Most students run the break-heavy version instead — full-time in February to April and August to September, around 80 days — which covers the bulk of a year's living costs and never touches the lecture-period limit at all.

Spending the 140-day allowance 56 days 80 days Lecture periods, 2 shifts a week Semester breaks, full time 4 days held in reserve 1,088 hours at €16.52 €17,973.76 gross Less pension share, 9.3% €16,302.20 Blocked account benchmark, 2025 €11,904 Night and weekend supplements are not included in the gross figure.

When in the academic year should a student line up the paperwork?

Ward work needs documents that take weeks to obtain, and the order they arrive in is not negotiable. The sequence below assumes a German winter semester starting in October.

12 weeks before

Book the visa appointment, open the blocked account, order apostilles and sworn translations. Translators quote two to four weeks in season.

Weeks 1–2 on arrival

Register your address at the Bürgeramt. Everything downstream depends on it, and city slots run weeks out.

Weeks 3–5

The tax identification number arrives by post. Apply for the residence permit, open a bank account, get a social insurance number.

Before the first shift

Occupational health clearance, vaccination documentation and a police certificate. German clinics and care homes check immunity records before anyone starts on a ward.

November–December

Apply to the hospital staff pool for the February–April break. Rotas are built two to three months ahead.

Every month after

Log days worked against the 140-day quota, payslip attached. The Ausländerbehörde asks at extension, not before.

The United Kingdom equivalent is a National Insurance number, a Disclosure and Barring Service check and occupational health clearance before a first NHS bank shift; the DBS check is the slow link in that chain. Ireland uses Garda vetting on a comparable timescale. Start early. Medschool Experts tells its placed students to make the police check a semester-one task, because it is the one document nobody can accelerate later.

What happens if a student works more days than the permit allows?

Working beyond the scope of a residence permit is not a paperwork slip, and the consequence usually arrives late and quietly. In Germany the Ausländerbehörde reviews the working-day account when the permit comes up for extension, which is why the city immigration offices publish the Arbeitstagekonto in the first place and why hospital HR departments track student day counts alongside their own rosters.

In the United Kingdom the position is stated plainly by university immigration services: breaching the work condition can mean the visa is cancelled, that a student is asked to leave the country, and that a future immigration application is refused. Failing to comply with visa conditions is a criminal offence, and income earned in breach may be subject to confiscation. That is why NHS bank booking systems carry automatic term-time caps for students.

None of this argues against working. It argues for counting. A dated shift log, every payslip kept, a deliberate margin below the ceiling — and there is nothing to answer at extension.

Two situations are worth checking individually: a change of programme mid-degree, which can change the basis of the permit, and a switch from an academic nursing degree to a vocational training contract, which in Germany replaces a study permit with a different permit carrying different work rights. Both are decided on the individual file. Medschool Experts assesses either in a free individual consultation, alongside where a place is achievable through its partner network of faculties. Accounts of how the working year actually runs sit under student stories.

The author's view

I work in visa and immigration law, and the file I see most often is not a refusal. It is a student who worked hard and kept no record of it. Germany's 140-day quota is counted per calendar year by the Ausländerbehörde at the moment of extension, and by then the shifts are eighteen months in the past. A spreadsheet of dates and payslips takes four minutes a month and settles the question before it is asked.

Living in Dubai and in India taught me how differently countries treat the same question. In some systems a student permit is a study document and work is an exception carved out of it; in others the work right is written into the permit and the only argument is about hours. Europe is mostly the second kind, which is better news than students expect. From Belgrade I deal with the German, Irish and British authorities in one week, and the difference between them is rarely how much they allow — it is the unit they count in. Germany counts days. Ireland counts calendar dates. The United Kingdom counts Monday to Sunday.

One more thing for a nursing student weighing this up: paid ward work and clinical placement are not the same experience, and doing the first makes you better at the second. Assistants learn the ward before the theory tells them what they are looking at. At Medschool Experts we plan the working year alongside the study route.

Summary

  • Germany allows 140 full days or 280 half days of paid work a year under § 16b of the Aufenthaltsgesetz; a shift of up to four hours is a half day, anything longer a full day, and university assistant work sits outside the quota entirely — the terms the Munich and Leipzig immigration offices publish for 2026.
  • The Werkstudentenprivileg exempts a student working up to 20 hours a week in the lecture period from statutory health, long-term care and unemployment contributions; pension stays, at an employee share of 9.3 per cent of the 18.6 per cent total, with no earnings cap attached and a 26-week allowance for weeks above 20 hours.
  • The German minijob threshold is €603 a month in 2026, up from €556 in 2025, derived from the statutory minimum wage of €13.90 an hour set for 1 January 2026; the midi-job band runs from €603.01 to €2,000, and the minimum wage rises to €14.60 on 1 January 2027.
  • Ireland allows a Stamp 2 student 20 hours a week in term and 40 in the holiday windows fixed as June to September and 15 December to 15 January; Stamp 2A carries no work permission.
  • The United Kingdom Student visa allows 20 hours a week in term at degree level and 10 below, counted Monday to Sunday with no averaging, and rules out self-employment, professional sport and a permanent full-time post.
  • Clinical placement is part of the degree and counts against none of these limits. Article 31 of Directive 2005/36/EC requires at least three years and at least 4,600 hours of training, theory at least one third and clinical instruction at least one half — so at least 2,300 hours on a ward.
  • Germany's nursing sector minimum wage rose on 1 July 2026 under the seventh Pflegearbeitsbedingungenverordnung to €16.52 an hour for assistants without a qualifying course, €17.80 with a one-year course and €21.03 for registered nurses, from €16.10, €17.35 and €20.50 a year earlier; NHS Agenda for Change 2026/27 in England pays band 2 £25,272 and band 3 £25,760–£27,476 from 1 April 2026.
  • Working 136 of the 140 permitted days at €16.52 an hour yields €17,973.76 gross and €16,302.20 after the pension share — more than a third above the €11,904 a year the German Federal Foreign Office set as the blocked account benchmark for 2025. The Grundfreibetrag for 2026 is €12,348.

Conclusion

Every one of these limits is a published number from a named authority, and every one is generous enough to fund a nursing degree when the year is planned around the lecture-free months. The work also builds what an application cannot fake: real ward hours, references from ward managers, and the vocabulary of a clinical team.

Which limit applies depends on the permit, the programme and the country, and those interact in ways worth checking before a contract is signed. Medschool Experts goes through the residence permit, the work rights attached to it and a realistic earning pattern for your programme in a free consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions about working as a healthcare assistant while studying nursing in Europe

Does a night shift count as one day or two against the German 140-day limit?

A shift crossing midnight counts as one working day, not two, provided it is a single continuous period of duty. German practice treats work of up to four hours as a half day and anything longer as a full day, as the Munich and Leipzig immigration offices publish for 2026, so a twelve-hour night shift spends one of the 140 full days allowed under § 16b of the Aufenthaltsgesetz. Long shifts use the quota efficiently.

Do clinical placement hours count against a student visa work limit?

No. Clinical placement forming part of an accredited nursing programme is education rather than employment in Germany, Ireland and the United Kingdom, and does not consume the paid-work allowance attached to a student permit or visa. The hours are supervised by the university and its practice partners, with no employment contract behind them. Article 31 of Directive 2005/36/EC requires at least 4,600 hours of nurse training, of which at least half is clinical instruction.

Can a nursing student in the United Kingdom work more than 20 hours in one week?

A student visa holder studying at degree level in the United Kingdom may work 20 hours in any week falling in term time, counted Monday to Sunday, and full-time outside term. Hours cannot be averaged: 25 hours in one term-time week is a breach of the condition even if the following week is quiet. Below degree level the term-time limit is 10 hours a week.

What is the minijob threshold in Germany in 2026?

The German minijob threshold, the Geringfügigkeitsgrenze, is €603 a month in 2026, up from €556 in 2025. It is no longer a fixed figure: it is derived from the statutory minimum wage, at that wage times 130 divided by three. The Federal Government set the minimum wage at €13.90 an hour from 1 January 2026, which produces €603. Earnings from €603.01 to €2,000 a month fall in the midi-job band.

Does a student need a qualification to work as a Pflegehelfer in Germany?

Not to be employed as an unqualified Pflegehilfskraft. Germany's nursing minimum wage ordinance recognises two assistant grades and pays them differently — one without a qualifying course, one with a one-year course — which shows the unqualified grade is a normal employment category. German hospitals routinely hire nursing students as supervised assistants. The Pflegeberufegesetz reserves assessment of care needs, care planning and evaluation to registered nurses, so those tasks stay off a student's list.

How many hours can a student work in Ireland during the summer?

A non-EEA student on Stamp 2 permission in Ireland may work 40 hours a week during the holiday periods, which Irish Immigration Service Delivery fixes as June, July, August and September, plus 15 December to 15 January. In term time the limit is 20 hours a week. Those dates are set centrally and do not move with a university's own calendar. Stamp 2A carries no work permission at all.

Does a student in Germany pay social insurance on a healthcare assistant job?

Only pension, in most cases. The Werkstudentenprivileg exempts an enrolled student working up to 20 hours a week during the lecture period from statutory health, long-term care and unemployment contributions, as the Deutsche Rentenversicherung sets out. Pension stays payable at an employee share of 9.3 per cent, half of the 18.6 per cent total rate. Work above 20 hours keeps the exemption at nights, weekends and in the lecture-free period, up to 26 weeks a year.

What does a healthcare assistant earn in the NHS?

Healthcare assistant posts in the National Health Service in England sit at Agenda for Change band 2, or band 3 where the role carries extra clinical responsibility. The 2026/27 Agenda for Change scales published by NHS Employers, effective 1 April 2026, set band 2 at a single point of £25,272 a year and band 3 from £25,760 to £27,476. Bank shifts are paid from the same scales, before unsocial-hours enhancements.
