Studying Dentistry in Turkey 2026: Costs, Structure and Recognition
18.09.2026
How long is dentistry in Turkey, and what degree do you get?
Five years. Turkish dentistry is a one-tier integrated programme worth 300 credits, and ENIC-NARIC Türkiye — the recognition department of the Council of Higher Education — records it as sitting at master's level, equivalent to a first cycle plus a second cycle combined. You do not take a bachelor's degree first and you do not add a master's afterwards. The award is the Doctor of Dental Surgery.
That matters for paperwork later. When a foreign regulator asks whether your qualification is a bachelor's or a master's, the Turkish diploma supplement — mandatory in English since the 2005–2006 academic year, per ENIC-NARIC Türkiye — answers it for you. Medicine in Turkey runs six years. Dentistry runs five.
Which Turkish universities teach dentistry in English?
The English-taught dental faculties sit almost entirely in the foundation sector — private, non-profit institutions that set their own fees. Yeditepe University, Istanbul Medipol University, Istanbul Aydin University and Bahcesehir University are the names that come up most often for international applicants, and all four are in Istanbul.
Yeditepe University was established in 1996 by the Istanbul Education and Culture Foundation and teaches essentially all of its programmes in English; its Faculty of Dentistry and University Hospital sit on the Asian side of the city, away from the main Kayisdagi campus. Istanbul Medipol University was founded on 7 July 2009 by the Turkey Education, Health and Research Foundation and trains its students at Medipol Mega University Hospital in Bagcilar, which opened in 2012 and holds Joint Commission International accreditation. Istanbul Aydin University dates from 18 May 2007 and is one of the largest private universities in the country, with roughly 50,000 students. Bahcesehir University sits in Besiktas.
Northern Cyprus is a separate case and should be treated as one. Near East University, in North Nicosia, was founded in 1988 by Suat Gunsel and is not a mainland Turkish institution: it operates in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus under that territory's own higher education council, and its diplomas are assessed by foreign regulators on their own terms rather than as Turkish diplomas. It is a large international campus — the QS profile for the 2027 edition records 13,313 international students out of 16,203, in the 791–800 world band. If your destination is a specific register, the location of the awarding institution is the first thing to check, not the last.
What does English-taught dentistry in Turkey cost in 2026?
Between $33,000 and $73,000 per year at the named Istanbul foundation universities, on the figures those universities published for 2026–2027. Istanbul Medipol University lists $36,000 a year for dentistry taught in English and $33,000 for the Turkish-language track. Yeditepe University lists $73,000 for its Faculty of Dentistry, reduced to $54,750 under its success-ranking support scheme.
Two things stand out. Dentistry is priced above medicine at Yeditepe University — $73,000 against $40,000 for the Faculty of Medicine in the same 2026–2027 table — which is unusual internationally and reflects chair time, materials and the cost of running a teaching dental hospital. And the English-language premium at Istanbul Medipol University is $3,000 a year, not a doubling.
| Programme, 2026–2027 | Yeditepe University | Istanbul Medipol University |
|---|---|---|
| Dentistry, English | $73,000 (from $54,750 with support) | $36,000 |
| Dentistry, Turkish | — | $33,000 |
| Medicine, English | $40,000 (from $30,000 with support) | $40,000 |
| Pharmacy | $24,000 (from $18,000 with support) | $18,000 |
Istanbul Aydin University and Bahcesehir University publish their own dentistry fee tables each spring, and those tables are the only figure worth quoting; anything circulating earlier is an estimate. Near East University in Northern Cyprus published €12,500 a year for medicine and dentistry in 2016–2017, which shows the order of magnitude that campus has historically worked at rather than a current price.
What is YOK, and what does its approval mean for your diploma?
The Council of Higher Education — Yuksekogretim Kurulu, YOK — is the body that authorises every degree programme in Turkey. It was established on 6 November 1981 and operates under Article 130 of the 1982 Constitution and Higher Education Law No. 2547. It has 24 members, reviews university budgets and submits rector nominations to the President. No Turkish university can open a dental faculty without it.
What YOK guarantees is that the programme exists lawfully, carries the national structure and leads to a recognised Turkish qualification. What it does not do is guarantee that a foreign regulator will license you. Those are separate systems and they always have been.
Quality assurance sits with a second body. The Higher Education Quality Council of Turkey, YOKAK, evaluates institutions and authorises independent organisations to run programme-level accreditation; for dentistry that work is done by the national dental education accreditation association. Ask a faculty whether its programme currently holds it, and for which years. Faculties that have it say so.
The same Council also runs the Department of Recognition and Equivalence Services at denklik.yok.gov.tr, Turkey's ENIC-NARIC centre, which decides whether a foreign degree is equivalent to a Turkish one. If you ever want to practise in Turkey with a non-Turkish diploma, that is the office.
What does the five-year curriculum cover, year by year?
The first two years are laboratory and lecture years; the last three are clinical. Year one is anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and dental materials. Year two moves to the phantom head laboratory, where you cut cavities and prepare crowns on manikins until the movements are automatic. Oral biology and pathology run alongside.
Year three is where the programme changes character. Radiology, periodontology and restorative dentistry become clinical subjects, and you begin taking patients under supervision. Year four is rotation-based: restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, paediatric dentistry, orthodontics. Year five is comprehensive care — you carry your own patient list from examination to finished treatment, with a supervisor signing off rather than standing over you.
Each year carries 60 credits, which is how the 300 total is reached. The load is even. There is no light year.
When does patient contact start in a Turkish dental faculty?
In the third year at the Istanbul faculties, and that is earlier than a number of Western European dental schools manage. The reason is structural: these universities own their teaching hospitals. Yeditepe University runs a dedicated dental hospital, and Istanbul Medipol University trains its students inside Medipol Mega University Hospital, which has held Joint Commission International accreditation since after its 2012 opening.
A teaching dental hospital with a real Istanbul patient population means volume, and volume is what dental training runs on. Extractions, restorations, scalings, impressions, endodontic access cavities — the number of procedures a student completes before graduation shapes how a new dentist performs in year one of practice.
Ask for the case-count requirements per discipline in the final two years. That number tells you what the clinic is like. Ask early.
What does a dental student spend per month in Istanbul and Ankara?
Istanbul runs roughly $750 to $1,000 a month for a student sharing a flat away from the centre; Ankara sits 20 to 25 per cent below that. These are Medschool Experts placement figures for 2026 and should be read as ranges, not as a published statistic — rents in Istanbul move with the lira and with the district.
| Monthly item, 2026 | Istanbul | Ankara |
|---|---|---|
| Room in a shared flat | $380–$550 | $280–$420 |
| University dormitory place | $200–$350 | $160–$280 |
| Food and household | $220–$300 | $190–$260 |
| Transport pass and phone | $45–$70 | $35–$60 |
| Books, materials, clinic consumables | $60–$120 | $60–$120 |
Two budget lines catch dental students that medical students never meet. Loupes, which most faculties expect by the clinical years, and a personal instrument kit. Both are one-off. Neither appears in a tuition table.
What does the full five years cost? A worked example
Take Istanbul Medipol University, dentistry in English, at its published 2026–2027 rate of $36,000 a year, and hold that rate flat for illustration. Tuition alone is $180,000 over five years. Everything else adds roughly a third again.
- Tuition, Istanbul Medipol University, Dentistry in English: $36,000 × 5 = $180,000
- Room in a shared flat near Kavacik, $450 a month × 12 × 5 = $27,000
- Food, transport, phone, $400 a month × 12 × 5 = $24,000
- Health insurance and residence permit, about $350 a year × 5 = $1,750
- Loupes, instrument kit, textbooks, one-off: $2,500
- Four flights a year between Zurich and Istanbul at about $180 × 5 = $3,600
Total: roughly $238,850 over five years, or about $47,770 a year. Run the same calculation at Yeditepe University's $73,000 and tuition alone reaches $365,000; run it with the success-ranking support at $54,750 and it lands at $273,750. The living-cost side barely moves. The tuition side decides everything.
How does the student residence permit work?
You enter on a student visa issued by a Turkish consulate against your letter of acceptance, then apply for a student residence permit — ogrenci ikamet izni — through the e-ikamet system of the Presidency of Migration Management once you are in the country. It is normally issued for one year and renewed annually for the length of the programme.
Health insurance is the piece people underestimate. International students are generally expected either to enrol in Turkish general health insurance within the first months of their registration or to hold private cover accepted by the migration authority, and the permit application asks for proof. Keep the enrolment certificate, the address registration and the insurance document in one folder from day one; every renewal asks for the same three things.
Start the permit application in your first fortnight. Appointment slots in Istanbul thin out fast in October.
{{cta}}Is a Turkish dental degree recognised in the European Union?
Yes, through an assessment procedure — but not automatically. Directive 2005/36/EC gives automatic recognition only to dental qualifications listed in its Annex V for European Union, European Economic Area and Swiss awards. Turkey is not a member state, so a Turkish Doctor of Dental Surgery is a third-country qualification and goes through the general system in whichever country you want to practise.
In practice the national competent authority — the dental chamber, health ministry or registration board of that country — compares your five years against its own dental curriculum and may require an aptitude test, an adaptation period, or both, plus proof of language competence at working level. Each state sets its own timetable. Start early.
There is a second door in the same directive. Once a third-country qualification has been recognised by one member state and its holder has accumulated professional experience there, the other member states must take that recognition into account rather than starting from zero. Dentists who qualify outside the Union and then register in one country often find the second country easier than the first. That route has a legal basis.
How does the General Dental Council's overseas route work in the United Kingdom?
Through the Overseas Registration Exam. The General Dental Council, which keeps the United Kingdom's dentists register, requires holders of dental qualifications gained outside the United Kingdom to pass the Overseas Registration Exam before they can be entered on that register, together with evidence of English language competence and the usual identity, health and good-standing checks.
The exam has two parts. Part 1 is written and tests clinically applied dental science and human disease. Part 2 is practical, taken at a Council-approved venue, and covers operative technique, diagnostics and treatment planning. The Council publishes the current fee for each part and the attempt limits within the permitted window; check those before you book, because they are reviewed periodically.
A Turkish dental degree is eligible for that route on the same footing as degrees from Australia, India or the United States. What makes the difference is your clinical case log from years four and five — Part 2 rewards hands-on volume, and a Turkish university dental hospital produces exactly that. Keep the log from the first patient.
Can credits from an earlier degree count toward dentistry in Turkey?
They can, and this is one of the most under-used routes into the profession. Biomedical scientists, dental hygienists, pharmacists, biologists and graduates of health-science programmes regularly carry substantial recognised credit into a dental faculty rather than starting again from the first semester.
Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist in credit-recognition placements for healthcare graduates and regularly achieves year 4 or year 5 entry at top universities worldwide. How much of an individual transcript is recognised is decided by the receiving faculty on the documents themselves, which is why the sensible first step is having someone read your transcript who places these cases every month. What most coverage of dentistry in Turkey leaves unanswered
Four things, consistently.
The first is that the fee you are quoted is rarely the fee you pay across five years. Turkish foundation universities publish a new table each spring, and unless a university states in writing that your rate is fixed for the duration of the programme, it is not. Near East University advertises fixed tuition throughout the degree; several Istanbul faculties index annually. Ask for it in writing before you accept a place, and ask what happens if you repeat a year.
The second is that the degree title travels but the clinical log is what gets examined. Regulators in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Gulf states and Australia all want procedure counts and case documentation. Turkish faculties keep these records well; students frequently do not collect their own copies until final year, by which point reconstructing year three is tedious.
The third is the language split inside the same building. An English-taught dental programme in Istanbul still puts you in a clinic where your patients speak Turkish. The lectures and the textbooks are in English. The chairside conversation is not. Every serious English-track faculty runs Turkish language teaching in the first years for exactly this reason, and students who take it seriously have a much better third year.
The fourth is that Northern Cyprus and mainland Turkey are two different answers to the same question. A diploma from North Nicosia and one from Istanbul are assessed under different rules by the same foreign regulator. Neither is a problem; treating them as interchangeable is. Our university overview keeps them separate.
What do the twelve months before your first semester look like?
Turkish faculties mostly start in late September, and the year in front of that has a shape worth knowing.
Exact timings shift by faculty and by intake. What each university asks of you, and when, is something Medschool Experts confirms for your specific case in a free individual consultation — requirements vary by university and by profile, and a generic checklist is worth less than a direct assessment. Placement stories from students already in Turkish and Balkan faculties are collected in our student stories.
The author's view
I studied dentistry in Sofia between 2015 and 2021 and I am licensed in Switzerland, where I live in Bern. The Turkish question is one I recognise from the inside: a five-year programme, taught in a language that is not the language of the street outside, ending in a diploma that then has to be explained to a regulator somewhere else. That last part is where people underestimate the work.
What I would look at first in Turkey is the hospital, not the fee table. A dental degree is a motor skill before it is anything else, and motor skills come from repetitions. A faculty with its own busy teaching hospital in a city of sixteen million gives you more chairs and more finished crowns than a smaller school with a prettier brochure. When I sat my own clinical examinations, nothing I had read mattered as much as the number of times I had already done the thing.
The one piece of admin I would not postpone: keep your own clinical log from the first patient in year three. Photograph it, back it up, keep case numbers by discipline. Part 2 of the Overseas Registration Exam and every competent authority in the European Union will eventually ask what you actually did.
Summary
- Dentistry in Turkey is a five-year, 300-credit one-tier programme awarding the Doctor of Dental Surgery; ENIC-NARIC Türkiye records it at master's level.
- Published 2026–2027 tuition runs from $33,000 to $73,000 a year: Istanbul Medipol University at $36,000 for the English track, Yeditepe University at $73,000.
- The Council of Higher Education (YOK), established on 6 November 1981, authorises every programme; the Higher Education Quality Council (YOKAK) handles quality assurance and programme accreditation.
- Patient contact typically begins in the third year, inside university-owned teaching hospitals such as Medipol Mega University Hospital, which opened in 2012.
- Living costs run roughly $750–$1,000 a month in Istanbul and 20–25 per cent less in Ankara, on Medschool Experts placement figures for 2026.
- A worked five-year budget at Istanbul Medipol University comes to about $238,850, of which $180,000 is tuition.
- In the European Union, a Turkish dental degree is recognised through the general system of Directive 2005/36/EC rather than automatically under Annex V.
- In the United Kingdom, the General Dental Council's overseas route runs through the Overseas Registration Exam, Part 1 written and Part 2 clinical.
Conclusion
Turkey gives you five years, an English-language classroom, a hospital chair from year three and a diploma with a defined path into two of the largest dental markets in Europe. The price band is wide. Which end of it you land on is a decision made before you apply, not after.
The parts that need individual judgement — which faculty suits your profile, what a fixed-rate tuition clause should say, whether credits you already hold can carry you past the first year — are worth going through with someone who places these cases. Start with a free consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions about Studying Dentistry in Turkey
How many years is dentistry in Turkey?
Five years. Turkish dentistry is a one-tier integrated programme of 300 credits, sixty per academic year, ending with the Doctor of Dental Surgery. ENIC-NARIC Türkiye, which is the recognition department of the Council of Higher Education, classifies it as equivalent to a first-cycle plus second-cycle qualification, so you do not take a separate bachelor's or master's. Medicine in Turkey runs six years; pharmacy and veterinary medicine also run five.
Can you study dentistry in Turkey entirely in English?
Yes. Several Istanbul foundation universities run the full dental programme in English, including Yeditepe University, which teaches essentially all of its programmes in English, and Istanbul Medipol University, where 24 of 74 undergraduate programmes are English-taught. Lectures, examinations and textbooks are in English throughout. Patients in the teaching clinic speak Turkish, which is why these faculties include Turkish language teaching in the early years.
What is the cheapest English-taught dentistry programme in Turkey?
Among the universities with published 2026–2027 figures, Istanbul Medipol University is the lowest at $36,000 a year for the English track, with the Turkish-language track at $33,000. Istanbul Aydin University and Bahcesehir University publish their own tables each spring. Any figure circulating before a university posts its own table for the coming intake is an estimate, not a price.
Is a Turkish dental degree valid in Germany, Austria or Switzerland?
It is assessed rather than automatically recognised. Turkey is outside the European Union and the European Economic Area, so Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply and the degree goes through the general recognition system instead. The national competent authority compares your curriculum against its own and may set an aptitude test, an adaptation period, or both, plus proof of language competence.
Do I have to take an exam to work as a dentist in the United Kingdom?
Yes, the Overseas Registration Exam. The General Dental Council requires holders of dental qualifications gained outside the United Kingdom to pass Part 1, which is written, and Part 2, which is clinical and practical, before entry on the dentists register. English language evidence and standard identity and good-standing checks apply as well. The Council publishes current fees and attempt limits on its registration pages.
Is Near East University in Northern Cyprus the same as a Turkish university?
No, and the difference matters for recognition. Near East University was founded in 1988 in North Nicosia and operates in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus under that territory's own higher education council rather than under Turkey's Council of Higher Education. Foreign regulators assess its diplomas on their own terms. It is a large international campus — 13,313 of 16,203 students are international on its QS profile for the 2027 edition.
When do dental students in Turkey start treating patients?
Generally in the third year, after two years of basic science and phantom-head laboratory work. The Istanbul faculties own their teaching hospitals, which is what makes early clinical placement possible: Yeditepe University runs a dedicated dental hospital and Istanbul Medipol University trains inside Medipol Mega University Hospital, opened in 2012 and accredited by Joint Commission International. Years four and five are rotation-based and then comprehensive patient care.
Can I transfer into a Turkish dental faculty with credits I already have?
Often, yes. Graduates of biomedical science, dental hygiene, pharmacy and related health programmes regularly carry recognised credit into a dental faculty instead of starting at semester one. How much is recognised depends on the receiving faculty's reading of your transcript. Medschool Experts specialises in credit-recognition placements for healthcare graduates and regularly achieves year 4 or year 5 entry at top universities worldwide.
