What should you know about Eastern Mediterranean University before planning a transfer?

Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU, Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi) is a public university in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. It opened in 1979 as the Institute of Higher Technology with 105 students and became a state university in 1986. In 2026 it teaches medicine and pharmacy in English, and its dentistry programme starts in English.

EMU reports students from 108 nationalities, more than 60,000 graduates, a place in the 601–800 band of the Times Higher Education ranking 2026 and membership of the European University Association. The university states that all its programmes are recognised by YÖDAK, the higher education authority of Northern Cyprus, and by YÖK, the Council of Higher Education of Türkiye.

The health faculties are young. Medicine took its first students in 2012–13.

The Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine is accredited by TEPDAD, the Turkish association for medical education accreditation, and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. ACPE, the US pharmacy accreditation council, lists the Pharm.D. with provisional international accreditation valid until January 2027.

Is a degree from Eastern Mediterranean University recognised in 2026?

A degree from Eastern Mediterranean University is recognised in Turkey and Northern Cyprus in 2026. Elsewhere, it depends on how each country treats universities in the TRNC, a state recognised only by Turkey. Several countries currently refuse or freeze such degrees, regardless of the quality of the programme.

The cause is political. UN Security Council Resolution 541 of 1983 called the declaration of the TRNC legally invalid. The credential evaluator ACEI wrote in June 2026 that recognition "varies by country and institution". In practice:

• Morocco: equivalence frozen since May 2024, after a Foreign Ministry directive to the Ministry of Higher Education. Morocco World News (March 2026) and Yabiladi (April and July 2026) report about 3,000 to 3,500 affected students and graduates, including in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. After protests in Rabat in March, on 22 April and in July 2026, talks were reported. Nothing is decided.
• Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE: reported by Cyprus Today in December 2020 as no longer recognising TRNC institutions.
• Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina: in our placement work in 2026, neither accepts the degrees or transfer students.
• EU countries: automatic recognition under EU Directive 2005/36/EC covers degrees from EU member states only, so authorities review Northern Cyprus degrees individually.

What does the joint programme with Marmara University mean for EMU medical students?

At Eastern Mediterranean University, medicine is a six-year joint programme with Marmara University in Istanbul, Türkiye. Years 1 to 3 take place in Famagusta, years 4 to 6 at Marmara University, and in 2026 graduates receive a diploma signed by both faculties. EMU states they can then practise in Turkey and Northern Cyprus without further equivalency exams.

The design points clearly to a Turkish career. In June 2023, EMU reported that 34 joint-programme graduates received their diplomas in Istanbul after clinical training at Marmara University Pendik Training and Research Hospital. International students take Turkish courses for patient contact.

What about Morocco, the Gulf or the EU? We have found no public statement on whether a Marmara co-signature changes how those authorities see the diploma. Do not assume it does.

Timing matters too. The three years in Famagusta are usually the easiest phase to plan a move, because preclinical credits compare well with European curricula. After the switch to Istanbul, you are inside a Turkish clinical programme.

What changes for EMU dentistry and pharmacy students?

Dentistry students at Eastern Mediterranean University spend years 1 and 2 in Famagusta and years 3 to 5 at the University of Health Sciences in Türkiye. Pharmacy students stay in Famagusta for five (M.Pharm.) or six (Pharm.D.) years. In 2026 both groups face the same country-by-country recognition question as medical students.

For dentistry, EMU states that the clinical years are taught in Turkish; the programme page gives a 30% English and 70% Turkish split overall. If you chose EMU for English teaching, factor that in. Two years pass quickly.

Pharmacy runs fully in English on one campus. Still, the Moroccan freeze of May 2024 applies to pharmacy too, and accreditation never replaces recognition by the ministry of the country where you want to work.

Can you transfer from Eastern Mediterranean University to another university in Europe?

Yes. In 2026, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Eastern Mediterranean University can apply to continue at other universities in Europe. Why are Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer an option for EMU students?

Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina used to be common destinations for students leaving Northern Cyprus. In Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, universities in both countries accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus, including students from Eastern Mediterranean University. That route is closed.

No public document announced the change; we see it in universities' answers to applications. If anyone offers you a place there based on your EMU record, get written confirmation from the university before paying or leaving Famagusta.

What does staying at Eastern Mediterranean University cost if your degree may not be recognised?

For 2026–27, Eastern Mediterranean University lists an annual medicine fee for new international students of about €12,577 to €15,723, depending on the scholarship level. A student who has finished year 2 has four years left, roughly €62,900 in tuition at the higher figure, before rent and travel.

The worked example: EMU publishes the medicine fee as USD 18,140 in its 30% scholarship column. At the European Central Bank rate of 16 September 2026, that is about €15,723 a year. Multiply it by the years ahead:

The fee table does not say whether another amount applies during the Marmara years, so confirm your figures with EMU. The logic holds either way. Tuition paid for a degree your country may refuse is money at risk.

Dentistry follows the same pattern: about €10,748 a year, or roughly €32,200 for the three years after year 2. Pharmacy costs about €6,613 a year at the 60% scholarship level. Smaller sums. Same question.

Which EMU students should act now?

In 2026, Eastern Mediterranean University students should consider a transfer now if they plan to work in Morocco, in a country reported as not recognising TRNC institutions, or anywhere that has not confirmed their degree in writing. Medicine students in years 1 to 3 and dentistry students in years 1 and 2 have the most room to move.

• You are Moroccan and need equivalence to work at home.
• You come from Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq or the UAE without written confirmation for your EMU degree.
• You want to work or specialise in the EU and have not had your case checked.
• Your move to Istanbul or to the clinical years in Türkiye is approaching.
