Are degrees from Northern Cyprus universities recognised in 2026?

In 2026, degrees from universities in Northern Cyprus are recognised by Turkey, reviewed case by case in many countries and refused outright in a growing list of others, including Morocco, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. For medicine, dentistry and pharmacy this matters more than anywhere else, because a licence to practise always starts with a recognised diploma.

The universities themselves are regulated by YÖDAK, the higher education authority of the TRNC, and many also hold approval from YÖK, the Council of Higher Education in Turkey. That is why Turkey treats the degrees like its own. Other governments look at the flag, not the curriculum. United Nations Security Council Resolution 541 of 1983 called the declaration of the TRNC legally invalid, and no state apart from Turkey has recognised it since. Recognising a diploma stamped in Nicosia's northern half can look, to a foreign ministry, like recognising the state behind it.

The Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute put it plainly in June 2026: because the TRNC lacks broad international recognition, credential recognition "varies by country and institution".

Which countries do not recognise Northern Cyprus university degrees?

As of September 2026, Morocco has frozen recognition since May 2024, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina do not accept the degrees or transfer students, and Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates were reported as no longer recognising TRNC institutions as early as December 2020.

The 2020 list comes from the newspaper Cyprus Today, which quoted the founding rector of Girne American University criticising the decisions. The Serbian and Bosnian situation is what we see in our own placement work in 2026: files from Northern Cyprus are no longer accepted there. Policies shift. Some countries reopen, others close without a public decree, as Morocco did.

What happened to Moroccan students in Northern Cyprus?

In May 2024, Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education stopped processing equivalence applications for degrees from Northern Cyprus after a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Around 3,000 to 3,500 Moroccan students and graduates are affected, many of them in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, according to reports from March to July 2026.

Before 2024, Morocco had accepted these degrees and even listed the universities in its Official Gazette. The change came without a decree. Morocco World News reported in March 2026 that graduates without equivalence cannot enter the public sector or start postgraduate studies in Morocco, and that private employers hesitate too. A national protest was called outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rabat in March 2026, Moroccan students demonstrated outside parliament on 22 April 2026, and an open-ended sit-in began at the Ministry of Higher Education in July 2026. Yabiladi reported that a solution was being discussed, with no details announced.

Waiting is a gamble. A fourth-year medical student cannot pause a degree for two years while a ministry makes up its mind.

Why does non-recognition hit medical students hardest?

Medicine is a regulated profession, so a doctor can only register, sit licensing exams or start specialist training once the diploma is recognised by the authority of the country where they want to work. An engineer without equivalence can still find private work. A doctor without it cannot treat patients.

The timing makes it worse. Medical programmes in Northern Cyprus run six years, dentistry five. A student who enrolled in 2022 made the decision under rules that no longer apply in 2026. The later the problem shows up, the more semesters are at stake, and the more important it becomes that the passed exams are carried over to a university whose degree is accepted.

Which universities in Northern Cyprus teach medicine in English?

In 2026, six universities in Northern Cyprus offer an English-taught Doctor of Medicine programme: Near East University, Eastern Mediterranean University, Cyprus International University, Girne American University, the University of Kyrenia and Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University. The European University of Lefke and Final International University add English-taught dentistry.

If you study at one of these universities and your home country has stopped recognising their degrees, your passed exams are still the basis for a transfer. Can you transfer from a university in Northern Cyprus to another university in Europe?

Why are Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer an option?

In 2026, universities in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina do not accept transfer students from Northern Cyprus, and both countries do not accept the degrees. For many students these two countries used to be the obvious next step: English-taught programmes, moderate tuition and short flights home.

What does staying in Northern Cyprus cost if your degree is not recognised?

At published list prices, six years of medicine in Northern Cyprus cost between about €46,000 and €81,000 in tuition alone, before rent, flights and living costs. If your home country does not recognise the degree, that money buys a diploma you cannot use to practise there.

Here is a worked example. A student at Near East University is in year 3. Staying means three more years at €13,515, or €40,545 in list tuition, for a degree Morocco currently does not register. Transferring means paying tuition at the new university instead, while the exams from years 1 to 3 are reviewed for credit. Many students in Northern Cyprus pay less than list price thanks to scholarships, so check your own contract. Who should consider a transfer now?

A transfer is worth checking now for every medical, dental or pharmacy student in Northern Cyprus whose home country has stopped recognising the degree, has frozen equivalence or has not answered clearly.
