Transfer from the European University of Lefke: Continue Dentistry or Pharmacy in Europe (2026)
17.09.2026
What is the European University of Lefke, and what does it teach in English?
The European University of Lefke is a university in Lefke, Northern Cyprus, founded in 1989 by the Cyprus Science Foundation and opened in 1990. In 2026 it teaches a five-year Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and two pharmacy degrees in English, and its website also lists a Faculty of Medicine.
The campus lies in the west of the island, overlooking Morphou (Güzelyurt) Bay, roughly 45 minutes by road from Nicosia. EUL has around 9,200 students. Like every university in Northern Cyprus, it is regulated by YÖDAK, the higher education authority of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Its programmes are also approved by YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education.
Dentistry is young here. The Faculty of Dentistry took its first students in the 2018–2019 academic year. According to the EUL Department of Dentistry Programme Handbook 2026, the DDS runs over 10 semesters and 300 ECTS, with 110 modules. The first six semesters are preclinical, with a phantom simulation laboratory for 75 students. In years four and five, students treat patients in a polyclinic with 35 fully equipped dental units.
The Faculty of Pharmacy teaches in English and offers a five-year Pharm M and a six-year Pharm D. AHPGS, a German accreditation agency for health and social sciences, has accredited the faculty for a five-year period running until 30 September 2028.
| EUL programme | Degree | Length | Teaching language | Annual list price 2025–2026* |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Pharmacy | Pharm M | 10 semesters (5 years) | English | €7,750 |
| Pharmacy | Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) | 12 semesters (6 years) | English | ask EUL |

Is the European University of Lefke the same as European University Cyprus?
No. The European University of Lefke is in Lefke, in the northern part of Cyprus administered by the TRNC. European University Cyprus is a different institution in Nicosia, in the Republic of Cyprus, which is an EU member state. The recognition problems described here apply only to Lefke.
The names are easy to mix up. The legal difference is large: dental and pharmacy degrees from the Republic of Cyprus fall under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. A degree from Lefke does not.
Is a degree from the European University of Lefke recognised in 2026?
A degree from the European University of Lefke is recognised in Turkey in 2026, because its programmes carry YÖK approval. Elsewhere it depends on the country. Morocco has frozen equivalence since May 2024, and several Middle Eastern states have been reported as not recognising Northern Cyprus institutions since 2020.
The cause is political. Turkey is the only country that recognises the TRNC as a state, and UN Security Council Resolution 541 (1983) called its declaration of independence legally invalid. Teaching quality is not the question.
The clearest case in 2026 is Morocco. After a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Higher Education, equivalence procedures for Northern Cyprus degrees have been frozen since May 2024. Morocco World News (March 2026) and Yabiladi (April and July 2026) put the number of affected students and graduates at around 3,000 to 3,500, across medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Students protested in Rabat in March, April and July 2026. Talks were reported in July 2026. Nothing has been announced.
Back in December 2020, Cyprus Today reported that Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates no longer recognised TRNC institutions. In June 2026, ACEI summed it up: recognition "varies by country and institution". Our overview of the Northern Cyprus degree recognition crisis explains the background across all universities on the island.
| Where you plan to work | What an EUL degree means in 2026 | Sensible next step |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | EUL programmes are approved by YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education | Staying is a realistic option |
| Morocco | Equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees frozen since May 2024, dentistry and pharmacy included | Free transfer review now |
| Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, UAE | Reported as no longer recognising TRNC institutions (Cyprus Today, 2020) | Get written confirmation or review a transfer |
| Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina | Neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus accepted (our placement work, 2026) | Do not plan a route through these countries |
| An EU country | No automatic recognition; case-by-case | Compare with an EU degree, which is recognised automatically |
What does this mean for European University of Lefke dental and pharmacy students?
For EUL dentistry and pharmacy students in 2026, recognition decides everything. Dentists and pharmacists need a licence from the country where they want to work, and that licence starts with an accepted degree. If your home country will not accept a Lefke diploma, five or six years of good training may not lead to practice there.
Dentistry adds a second pressure. A student who finishes all ten semesters before learning the degree is blocked has paid full tuition and lost years. A student who acts in year two or three still has options. Timing matters.
Pharmacy students face the same logic over five or six years. Registration as a pharmacist always starts with an accepted degree.
Can you transfer from the European University of Lefke to a university in Europe?
Yes. Students of dentistry and pharmacy at the European University of Lefke can transfer to other universities in Europe in 2026, with their passed exams reviewed for credit. In 2026, Medschool Experts has already moved several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus to universities in Europe.
Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist for medical study transfers, covering medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. We frequently achieve high year placements, often year 4 or 5, at top universities. Your exact entry year depends on what you have passed at EUL, so we confirm it after a free review of your record.
The process is calm and ordered:
- Free consultation. You tell us where you want to work later and what you have completed in Lefke.
- Record review. We compare your EUL modules with the curricula of receiving universities in Europe.
- Placement offer. You see which universities can take you and in which year, before you commit to anything.
- Switch with a plan. You stay enrolled at EUL until your new place is confirmed.
Under Directive 2005/36/EC, dental and pharmacy degrees from EU member states are recognised automatically across the EU. See how our transfer services work, or read student stories from people who changed universities.
Please do not deregister from EUL first. Keep studying and sitting your exams while the review runs. Every module you pass adds to your record.
Why are Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer an option for EUL students?
In 2026, universities in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus. That is what Medschool Experts sees in its placement work this year, and it applies to EUL dentistry and pharmacy students as well. There is no official announcement to cite. The practice is consistent.
Both countries used to be a common route out of Northern Cyprus. That route is closed. We only propose universities that currently accept transfers from Northern Cyprus and whose degrees your country recognises.
What does staying at the European University of Lefke cost if your degree may not be recognised?
Staying at the European University of Lefke costs a dentistry student €13,750 per remaining year at the 2025–2026 list price, before any scholarship. A student finishing year two in 2026 still faces three years, or €41,250 in tuition at list price and €20,625 with a 50% scholarship.
These are the figures for tuition alone. Housing, food, flights and exam fees are extra. For a Pharm M student, the same three years come to €23,250 at the €7,750 list price, or €11,625 with a 50% scholarship.
The real risk is spending that money on a degree your home country may not accept. Every month counts.
A transfer costs money too, so compare both paths with real numbers. We lay out the costs of your options during the free consultation, and our university overview shows where Medschool Experts places students.
Which European University of Lefke students should act now?
EUL students should act now in 2026 if they plan to work in a country that has frozen or refused Northern Cyprus degrees, such as Morocco, or in the European Union. Dentistry students before the clinical years and pharmacy students in their first three years have the most room to plan.
Act now if one of these fits you:
- You are from Morocco, and your family is waiting for the equivalence freeze to end.
- You are from Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq or the UAE, and nobody has confirmed in writing that your degree will count.
- You want to work as a dentist or pharmacist in the EU later.
- You considered Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina as a way out.
If you plan to practise in Turkey, staying at EUL can be a sound choice. Everyone else should get a clear answer early. For the whole island, read our article on degree recognition in Northern Cyprus.
The author's view
I studied dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021, starting at 24. When a student from Lefke tells me that their home country may not accept the degree, I do not hear a paperwork problem. I hear years of hard clinical work that might never be allowed to count.
Being a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland taught me one thing above all: a licence is decided by an authority, not by a university. As the founder of Medschool Experts, having placed more than 500 students abroad, I ask every dental and pharmacy student the same question first. Where do you want to work? Once we have that answer, the right university usually follows. For many EUL students in 2026, it is a university in Europe.
Summary
- The European University of Lefke (founded 1989, opened 1990) teaches a 10-semester DDS dentistry degree and Pharm M and Pharm D pharmacy degrees in English.
- YÖK approval means a Lefke degree works in Turkey.
- Morocco has frozen equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024, including dentistry and pharmacy.
- Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus in 2026.
- Medschool Experts transfers EUL students to universities in Europe; the entry year is confirmed after a free review.
Conclusion
EUL offers English teaching, simulation labs and a 35-unit dental clinic. None of that decides whether your home country will license you. Politics does.
If your future practice depends on a recognised degree, the safest moment to act is before your clinical years and before more tuition is spent. Send us your EUL record and we will show you where you can continue, in which year and at what cost. Book your free, no-obligation consultation.
Frequently asked questions about transferring from the European University of Lefke
Is the European University of Lefke recognised in Morocco?
Not at the moment. Since May 2024, Morocco has frozen equivalence procedures for degrees from universities in Northern Cyprus, including the European University of Lefke, after a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dentistry and pharmacy are among the affected fields. Talks were reported in July 2026, but no solution has been announced. Moroccan students at EUL should not count on a quick change.
Does the European University of Lefke have a medical faculty?
The website of the European University of Lefke lists a Faculty of Medicine alongside its Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy. Its English-taught Doctor of Dental Surgery and Pharm M and Pharm D pharmacy degrees are documented in detail. The recognition questions apply to every degree issued in Northern Cyprus, medicine included.
Can I transfer from the European University of Lefke dentistry programme to Europe?
Yes. Dentistry students at the European University of Lefke can move to other universities in Europe, and Medschool Experts has transferred several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus in 2026. The receiving university reviews your passed modules. We frequently achieve placements in year 4 or 5 at top universities; your exact entry year is confirmed after a free review.
Is the European University of Lefke the same as European University Cyprus?
No. The European University of Lefke is located in Lefke, in the north of Cyprus under TRNC administration, and is regulated by YÖDAK. European University Cyprus is a separate university in Nicosia, in the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state. Dental and pharmacy degrees from the Republic of Cyprus fall under EU Directive 2005/36/EC; degrees from Lefke do not.
Are European University of Lefke pharmacy degrees accredited?
Yes. The Faculty of Pharmacy at the European University of Lefke is accredited by AHPGS, a German accreditation agency for health and social sciences, until 30 September 2028, and EUL programmes are approved by Turkey's YÖK. Accreditation confirms teaching standards. It does not oblige any government to recognise a degree from Northern Cyprus, which remains a political decision.
Can I still transfer from the European University of Lefke to Serbia or Bosnia?
No. In Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, universities in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus, and that includes the European University of Lefke. Students who planned this route need another option. We look for universities in Europe that currently accept transfers from Northern Cyprus and whose degrees your home country recognises.
How much does dentistry at the European University of Lefke cost?
The European University of Lefke dentistry programme is quoted at an annual list price of €13,750 for international students in 2025–2026, before scholarships. EUL advertises merit-based scholarships of 50% to 100%. With a 50% scholarship, three remaining years come to €20,625 in tuition, plus living costs. Confirm current fees with the university.
