Transfer from Girne American University: Continue Medicine or Pharmacy in Europe (2026)

Transfer from Girne American University: Continue Medicine or Pharmacy in Europe (2026)

Girne American University (GAU) in Kyrenia teaches Medicine and Pharmacy entirely in English, and students from well over a hundred countries have enrolled there for exactly that reason. In 2026 many of them face a question the university cannot settle for them: will their home country accept the diploma?

The answer has little to do with lectures or exams. Northern Cyprus is recognised as a state only by Turkey, and several countries, most visibly Morocco since May 2024, have stopped or frozen the recognition of degrees from its universities.

For a GAU student whose career lies outside Turkey, three things now count: which semesters are at stake, what staying will cost, and how a transfer to another university in Europe works.

Last reviewed: September 2026.

What is Girne American University and which health programmes does it teach in English?

Girne American University is a private university in Kyrenia (Girne), Northern Cyprus, founded in 1985. Its main Karmi Campus lies in Karaoğlanoğlu, west of Kyrenia town. In 2026 GAU reports more than 20,000 students from 135 countries and runs an English-taught Doctor of Medicine and an English-taught Pharmacy degree.

One point causes frequent mix-ups. GAU is not the University of Kyrenia (Girne Üniversitesi), which is a separate institution in the same town.

The medical faculty is young. The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) gives 2019 as the year instruction began. GAU states that its MD programme is recognised and accredited by YÖDAK, the higher education council of Northern Cyprus, and by the TRNC Ministry of National Education and Culture. The WDOMS entry adds that the school is recognised by the Turkish Ministry of Health and by YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education.

And dentistry? GAU's official list of 13 faculties, checked in September 2026, includes Medicine and Pharmacy but no Faculty of Dentistry. Dental students at other universities in Northern Cyprus face the same recognition questions, which our overview of degree recognition in Northern Cyprus covers.

Is a medical degree from Girne American University recognised in 2026?

In 2026, a medical degree from Girne American University is accepted in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, while recognition in most other countries is uncertain. The reason is political: the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is recognised as a state only by Turkey, so other governments are not bound to accept qualifications from its universities.

The roots reach back to 1983. That year, UN Security Council Resolution 541 called the TRNC's declaration of independence legally invalid, and nearly every government still follows that position. For a future doctor this is no abstract debate, because a medical licence depends on a national authority accepting the institution that issued the diploma.

Several countries have already drawn a line. In December 2020, Cyprus Today reported that Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates no longer recognised TRNC institutions. Morocco froze equivalence in May 2024. In June 2026 the credential evaluation service ACEI summed up the picture: recognition "varies by country and institution".

The EU works differently. Under Directive 2005/36/EC, medical degrees from EU member states are recognised automatically across the Union. A degree from Northern Cyprus is outside that system, even though the Republic of Cyprus in the south is an EU member. The WDOMS entry for GAU itself notes that the school is not recognised by the government of Cyprus.

Turkey: yes. Elsewhere: case by case.

Can Moroccan students still get a Girne American University degree recognised?

Not at present. Since May 2024, Morocco has frozen equivalence for degrees from universities in Northern Cyprus after a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Ministry of Higher Education. The freeze covers medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, so Moroccan students of Medicine and Pharmacy at Girne American University are directly affected.

Morocco World News (March 2026) and Yabiladi (April and July 2026) put the number of affected students and graduates at roughly 3,000 to 3,500. Families protested in Rabat in March 2026, again outside parliament on 22 April 2026, and staged a sit-in in July 2026. Talks about a solution were reported in July 2026. Nothing has been announced since.

For a Moroccan GAU student, each additional semester becomes a wager on a political decision. Some will wait. Others would rather secure their credits at a university whose degree Morocco accepts.

What does the recognition problem mean for students at Girne American University?

For students at Girne American University, the risk depends on two things: the year of study and the country where they plan to work. A first-year medical student has little invested so far, while a student in semester 8 has four years of tuition and exams on the line. The later a recognition problem surfaces, the more it costs.

Two features of the GAU programme deserve attention. The MD curriculum is integrated, running from basic sciences in semesters 1 to 4, through an introduction to clinical sciences in semesters 5 and 6 and clinical rotations in semesters 7 to 10, to a family-medicine internship in semesters 11 and 12. GAU also states that this final-year internship takes place at Mersin University in Turkey under a cooperation protocol. The diploma, however, is still awarded by a university in Northern Cyprus.

Pharmacy students follow a five-year track with practical training blocks in the summers and a hospital pharmacy internship in semester 10. Their recognition question is identical.

Planning to practise in Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq or the United Arab Emirates? Then the recognition issue affects you today, not at graduation. Clarify your position while most of your passed semesters can still count towards a new programme.

Can you transfer from Girne American University to a university in Europe?

Yes. Students of Medicine and Pharmacy at Girne American University can transfer to other universities in Europe, and in 2026 Medschool Experts has already moved several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus to new universities. Passed modules are reviewed individually, and many of them can be credited.

Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist for medical study transfers. We frequently achieve high year placements, often in year 4 or 5, at top universities. The exact entry year for a GAU student becomes clear only after a free review of transcripts and course descriptions.

Everything starts with a conversation about your transcript, your GAU curriculum and the country where you want to practise. We then shortlist universities whose degree that country accepts, prepare the application with you and stay at your side until you are enrolled.

Entry rules and dates differ from one university to the next. We clarify them for your case in the free consultation. You can browse the institutions we work with on our university overview and see what our support includes on the services page.

Why are Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer an option for Girne American University students?

From Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, neither Serbia nor Bosnia and Herzegovina currently accepts degrees or transfer students from universities in Northern Cyprus. For Girne American University students, that closes two routes many had considered because of their English-taught programmes and moderate costs.

No public statement explains the shift, but what we see in our placement work is consistent: applicants from Northern Cyprus are not being admitted there. A transfer plan for a GAU student concentrates on other universities in Europe whose degrees are accepted in the student's target country.

Positions can change. We check every case against the latest situation.

What does staying at Girne American University cost if recognition fails?

At 2025–2026 list prices, a year of Medicine at Girne American University costs €13,500 including the €500 registration and activity fee, and a year of Pharmacy costs €11,500. A medical student entering year 3 in autumn 2026 therefore still faces about €54,000 in tuition before graduation.

These figures from GAU's fee table exclude rent, food and flights. Instalment plans, anniversary fees and future changes can alter individual amounts.

Tuition still ahead: GAU MedicineEach block = one year at €13,500 (2025–26 list price)From year 2Y2Y3Y4Y5Y6€67,500From year 3Y3Y4Y5Y6€54,000From year 4Y4Y5Y6€40,500From year 5Y5Y6€27,000Pharmacy: €11,500 per year, so €34,500from year 3 to graduation.Tuition only. Rent, food and flights come on top.
Calculated from the Girne American University tuition table for 2025–2026 (€13,000 Medicine, €11,000 Pharmacy, plus €500 registration and activity fee per year). Scholarships, instalments and anniversary fees can change individual amounts.

The logic is simple. If the home country does not accept the diploma, those €54,000 buy a degree that cannot lead to a licence there. Tuition elsewhere in Europe varies widely, so a transfer does not make studying free. It moves the investment towards a degree with a clear route to recognition.

Money is only half of it. Time is the other half.

Which Girne American University students should act now?

Girne American University students who plan to work outside Turkey and Northern Cyprus should review their options in 2026, above all those from Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq or the United Arab Emirates. Students in the early years have the widest choice, while those further along have the most to protect.

  • Moroccan students of Medicine or Pharmacy at GAU while the equivalence freeze lasts.
  • Students whose home country has been reported as not recognising TRNC institutions.
  • Students aiming for the EU, where automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC applies only to degrees from EU member states.
  • Students who had counted on a move to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Families financing several more years of tuition.

If you intend to practise in Turkey, staying at GAU can be a sound choice. Everyone else gains clarity from a review. Read how others have changed university in our student stories, and find the wider context in our analysis of the Northern Cyprus recognition crisis.

The author's view

I started studying dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia when I was 24 and graduated in 2021. I still remember how much every semester weighed, in money and in nerves. When students from Girne American University contact us now, their story sounds familiar: they picked an English-taught programme in good faith, passed their exams, and then learned that decisions taken far from the campus may define what their diploma is worth.

Today I am a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland, and recognition is exactly what turns years of study into a profession. Since founding Medschool Experts, I have placed more than 500 students abroad, and my advice for GAU students is practical: name the country where you want to work, then find out whether it accepts your degree. If the answer is unclear, have your transcript reviewed early. A planned move in year 3 is far easier than a surprise after graduation.

Summary

  • Girne American University (Kyrenia, founded 1985) teaches a six-year MD and a five-year Pharmacy degree in English.
  • List tuition for 2025–2026 is €13,000 per year for Medicine and €11,000 for Pharmacy, plus a €500 annual fee.
  • Northern Cyprus is recognised as a state only by Turkey, so recognition of its degrees elsewhere is uncertain.
  • Morocco has frozen equivalence since May 2024; about 3,000 to 3,500 students and graduates are affected.
  • In our 2026 placement work, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfers from Northern Cyprus.
  • Transfers from GAU to other universities in Europe are possible, with the entry year set after a free review.

Conclusion

GAU students did not create the recognition problem, and it says nothing about the work they do in lecture halls and labs. It is political. The consequences still land on them: on their licence, their budget and their time.

Frequently asked questions about transferring from Girne American University

Is Girne American University the same as the University of Kyrenia?

No. Girne American University (GAU) and the University of Kyrenia (Girne Üniversitesi) are two separate institutions, although both are located in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus. Girne American University was founded in 1985 and runs its main Karmi Campus in Karaoğlanoğlu. When you check fees, programmes or recognition, make sure every document you rely on refers to the right university.

Is a medical degree from Girne American University recognised in Europe?

A medical degree from Girne American University is not covered by the automatic recognition that EU Directive 2005/36/EC grants to degrees from EU member states. Each European country decides for itself, and in 2026 recognition of qualifications from Northern Cyprus remains uncertain. The WDOMS entry for GAU states that the school is not recognised by the government of Cyprus. Check with your target country's authority before investing further years.

Can I transfer from Girne American University in the middle of my medical degree?

Yes. Medical students at Girne American University can transfer to other universities in Europe during their studies. Medschool Experts reviews passed modules and frequently achieves high year placements, often in year 4 or 5, at top universities. The exact entry year depends on your transcript and course descriptions and is determined after a free, no-obligation review of your documents.

Does Girne American University offer dentistry?

Girne American University's official list of 13 faculties, checked in September 2026, includes a Faculty of Medicine and a Faculty of Pharmacy but no Faculty of Dentistry. Dental students at other universities in Northern Cyprus face the same recognition questions as GAU's medical and pharmacy students, and they can also have their options for a transfer to another European university reviewed free of charge.

How much does Medicine at Girne American University cost?

According to the published 2025–2026 fee table, Medicine at Girne American University costs €13,000 per year, plus a €500 registration and activity fee. Six years at list price therefore come to about €81,000 in tuition, before rent and living costs. GAU mentions instalment plans and special anniversary fees, so individual amounts may differ, and fees for later years can change.

Are Moroccan students at Girne American University affected by the equivalence freeze?

Yes. Since May 2024, Morocco has frozen equivalence for degrees from universities in Northern Cyprus, including medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Moroccan students of Medicine and Pharmacy at Girne American University fall under this freeze. Morocco World News and Yabiladi reported in 2026 that roughly 3,000 to 3,500 students and graduates are affected. Talks were reported in July 2026, but no solution has been announced.

Can Girne American University students still transfer to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Based on Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, neither Serbia nor Bosnia and Herzegovina currently accepts degrees or transfer students from universities in Northern Cyprus, including Girne American University. Students who had planned such a move should look at other universities in Europe whose degree is accepted in the country where they want to practise. A free consultation clarifies which options fit.
