What is Near East University, and what does it offer medical students?

Near East University (Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi) was founded in 1988 in Nicosia, called Lefkoşa in Turkish, and is the largest university in Northern Cyprus. Its Faculty of Medicine website (2026) lists 19 faculties and more than 30,000 students from 134 countries. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are all taught in English.

The Faculty of Medicine was founded on 20 July 2008. Its six-year programme is organ- and system-based: years one to three integrate basic and clinical sciences, years four and five are clinical clerkships, and year six is the internship. Clinical training takes place at Near East University Hospital on the campus. The hospital's website lists 55,000 square metres, 209 patient rooms, 30 intensive care beds and eight operating theatres. In January 2024 the university announced an international accreditation for the faculty, citing the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

The Faculty of Dentistry dates from 2007. Its five-year programme has three pre-clinical and two clinical years, with patient work at the Near East Dentistry Hospital. Pharmacy is also offered in English over five years. The university lists membership of YÖDAK, the higher education authority of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education. The facilities are substantial.

Is a Near East University medical degree recognised in 2026?

In 2026, a medical degree from Near East University is recognised in Turkey, where the university is listed with YÖK, but elsewhere the answer depends on your country. Morocco has frozen equivalence since May 2024, several Middle Eastern states were reported in 2020 to have stopped recognising TRNC institutions, and many others decide case by case.

The reason lies outside the lecture hall. The TRNC is recognised as a state only by Turkey, and UN Security Council Resolution 541 of 1983 called its declaration legally invalid. The Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute (ACEI) summed it up in June 2026: recognition "varies by country and institution". Politics decides, not grades.

Is a Near East University degree recognised in Morocco?

No, not at the moment. Since May 2024, Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education has issued no equivalence for degrees from Northern Cyprus universities, Near East University included, following a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are among the affected fields, and around 3,000 to 3,500 Moroccan students and graduates are caught up in the freeze.

Morocco World News mentioned Near East University by name in its March 2026 report on the freeze, which put the number of affected students and graduates at about 3,500. Yabiladi covered the protests that followed: in Rabat in March 2026, outside parliament on 22 April 2026, and a sit-in in July 2026. Talks about a solution were reported in July 2026. As of September 2026, nothing has been announced.

For a Moroccan student in year two or three, waiting means paying more fees without knowing the outcome. A solution might come. It might not.

What does this mean for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Near East University?

For students at Near East University, the recognition problem weighs most on the regulated health professions: a doctor, dentist or pharmacist needs a recognised degree before any licence, internship or specialist training at home. Students in the six-year medicine and five-year dentistry programmes have the most time and money at stake in 2026.

The earlier you are, the more you still have to pay towards a degree your country may refuse. The later you are, the more you have already achieved. The receiving university reviews your passed modules from Near East University subject by subject.

Dentistry students should plan early. Clinical places in dental schools are limited, and years four and five are built around patient work. Timing matters. Pharmacy students pay less in Nicosia thanks to the published special scholarship, but their recognition question is exactly the same.

Can you transfer from Near East University to a university in Europe?

Yes. In 2026, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Near East University can transfer to other universities in Europe, and Medschool Experts has already placed several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus this year. A degree from an EU member state brings clarity. Under Directive 2005/36/EC, medical qualifications from EU countries are recognised automatically across the European Union. Outside the EU, the target is a university whose degree your country accepts, checked before you move.

Whether you should stay at Near East University or transfer comes down to one question: does the country where you want to work accept the degree for licensing in 2026? If it does, and you have that in writing, staying can be a sound choice. If it does not, or nobody can tell you, planning a transfer now protects the years you have already studied.

In 2026, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus universities, and that includes Near East University. What does staying at Near East University cost if your degree is not recognised?

At Near East University, English-taught medicine costs €13,515 a year in 2026/27, including VAT and the administrative fee, according to the university's published fee list. Over six years that comes to €81,090 at current prices, before rent, flights and living costs. English-taught dentistry costs €12,465 a year, or €62,325 over five years.

The fee list excludes medicine and dentistry from its 50% scholarship for international students. Pharmacy shows a special scholarship that lowers the annual total to €4,800.

Take a medical student about to start year three in autumn 2026. Four years remain: 4 × €13,515 = €54,060 at 2026/27 prices. If the home country still refuses the degree, that money buys a diploma that cannot be used there. That is the real risk. A transfer puts the same years into a programme whose degree is accepted.

Which Near East University students should act now?

Near East University students should act now if they come from Morocco or another country that currently does not recognise Northern Cyprus degrees, if they had planned a move to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina, or if their home authority cannot give them a written answer on recognition in 2026.

• Moroccan students of medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, whatever their year.
• Students in years one to three, who still have most of the fees ahead of them.
• Students in the clinical years who need a recognised degree to start specialist training at home.
• Students who had a transfer to the Balkans in mind.
