What is the University of Kyrenia, and which health degrees does it teach in English?

The University of Kyrenia (Girne Üniversitesi) is a private university in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus. It received approval from the TRNC authorities in March 2013 and from Turkey's Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in January 2014. For 2026–2027 it lists English-taught Medicine (six years), Dentistry (five years) and Pharmacy (five years).

The university describes itself as the sister institution of Near East University. Its campus stands on a 27-acre coastal site in Karakum and opened in November 2015. Today it runs 14 faculties, among them the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy. It is regulated in Northern Cyprus by YÖDAK.

Clinical teaching has a home on site. The Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital opened on 15 November 2016, and the Faculty of Medicine had started its first academic year in October 2016. Dentistry students train at the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Dental Hospital. The Faculty of Medicine states that it is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.

According to its course catalogue (2019), the medical programme carries 360 ECTS credits: an integrated preclinical phase in years one to three, clinical clerkships in years four and five, and an internship year.

One point causes confusion. The University of Kyrenia is not Girne American University. They are separate institutions.

Is a University of Kyrenia degree recognised in 2026?

A University of Kyrenia degree is accepted in Northern Cyprus and in Turkey, where YÖDAK and YÖK approve the university. Outside those two, recognition in 2026 depends on each country's authority and has become less predictable, because only Turkey recognises the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a state.

The root is political. UN Security Council Resolution 541 (1983) called the declaration of the TRNC legally invalid, and most governments still follow that line. The US credential evaluator ACEI summed up the position in June 2026: recognition "varies by country and institution".

Some countries have already drawn a line. Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education has issued no equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024, after a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Morocco World News (March 2026) and Yabiladi (April and July 2026) put the number of affected students and graduates at about 3,000 to 3,500, in fields including medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. As early as December 2020, Cyprus Today reported that Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates no longer recognised TRNC institutions.

What does the recognition gap mean for University of Kyrenia medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students?

For University of Kyrenia students in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, recognition decides whether they may practise at all. All three are regulated professions: in almost every country, a doctor, dentist or pharmacist needs a licence, and that licence depends on a national authority accepting the degree.

A business graduate with a doubtful diploma can often still find work. A doctor cannot. Without recognition there is no licence, no specialist training and no clinical job, however good the teaching was.

Time makes it harder. The medical degree at the University of Kyrenia lasts six years, and dentistry and pharmacy last five. Each semester adds fees, rent and months of your life to a qualification whose value abroad is unclear. It also adds passed exams, and those exams are what a transfer builds on.

Students from Morocco feel this most sharply today. Protests took place in Rabat in March 2026, outside parliament on 22 April 2026, and as a sit-in in July 2026. Talks about a solution were reported in July 2026. Nothing has been announced.

What does it cost to stay at the University of Kyrenia until graduation?

At the University of Kyrenia's published 2026–2027 rates, a year of English-taught medicine costs €7,650 after the standard 50% scholarship, including VAT and the administrative fee. English-taught dentistry costs €7,125 a year and pharmacy €4,147. A medical student who has just finished year two still faces €30,600 in tuition.

A worked example. You finished year two of medicine in summer 2026. Four years remain: 4 × €7,650 = €30,600 in tuition alone. A dentistry student at the same point has three years left, or €21,375. A pharmacy student has €12,441 to go.

Add rent, food and flights for every one of those years. These figures assume the 2026–2027 prices and your scholarship stay unchanged, which no student can take for granted.

The larger cost is hidden. It is a degree your home country might not accept.

Which University of Kyrenia students should act now?

University of Kyrenia students should act now if their home country has frozen or questioned Northern Cyprus degrees, if they want to work in Europe, or if they have no written confirmation from their own ministry. Students in the first four years of medicine or dentistry have the most to protect.

• Moroccan students in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, while equivalence stays frozen.
• Students from Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE, given the non-recognition reported in 2020.
• Anyone planning Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina as a next step.
• Anyone who wants to practise in the EU without years of uncertain recognition procedures.
• Anyone relying on verbal assurances rather than a written statement from their ministry.
