Study Medicine in Wroclaw

Wroclaw Medical University is a public medical university with its own university hospital and a dedicated English-language division for international students. It regularly ranks among the country's strongest medical schools in Polish and international rankings.

Dean and professors

The Faculty of Medicine (Wydział Lekarski) of Wroclaw Medical University is led by Dean Prof. Robert Zymliński, MD, PhD. The cardiologist also heads the Department of Cardiac Intensive Care at the university's Institute of Heart Diseases.

• Prof. Piotr Ponikowski, MD, PhD – Rector of Wroclaw Medical University and head of the Institute of Heart Diseases, which according to the university ranks first in Poland and 14th worldwide in cardiology.
• Prof. Waldemar Goździk, MD, PhD – head of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy and chair of the Lower Silesian section of the Polish Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy.
• Prof. Monika Przewłocka-Kosmala, MD, PhD – head of the Department of Cardiology at the Institute of Heart Diseases.

• Medicine: The Medicine programme leads to a medical degree. The pre-clinical phase establishes the scientific foundations; the clinical phase adds patient-facing work.
• Dentistry: Dentistry is practical from the outset: phantom courses in the pre-clinical phase, then supervised patient treatment.
• Veterinary Medicine: Programme taught in English at Wroclaw Medical University.

The Medicine programme lasts six years. The first two years form the pre-clinical phase with anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and embryology; in parallel you take Polish courses, because you will later speak with Polish-speaking patients at the bedside. From year three, the clinical phase follows with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry, accompanied by placements at the university hospital in Wrocław. The final year is entirely practical and works like a final clinical year.

The official tuition fee for 2026/2027 is PLN 67,900 per year for Medicine (approx. €15,670) and PLN 78,700 per year for Dentistry (approx. €18,160), converted at the September 2026 National Bank of Poland reference rate (admission.umw.edu.pl). Before making any decision, ask the International Office to confirm the amount in writing.

Additional one-off costs include the application fee, visa, health insurance, travel, and usually a deposit for accommodation. Budget approx. €550–750 per month for living costs. Note: Wrocław Medical University does not teach Veterinary Medicine – that programme is taught at the separate Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.

Poland is part of the European Union, so Directive 2005/36/EC applies. Both the lekarz degree after six years of Medicine and the lekarz dentysta degree after five years of Dentistry at Wroclaw Medical University are automatically recognised throughout the EU/EEA and in Switzerland. No equivalence assessment or additional examination is required.

Anyone who wants to practise in Poland takes the state exam LEK and completes the Staż internship year; other EU countries require neither. You apply to the competent authority of the country where you want to work and provide proof of language skills at a professional level; processing times vary by country.

After that, the path leads into medical or dental specialist training on equal terms with graduates of domestic schools. Wrocław is one of the milder parts of Poland: the average annual temperature is 9.7 °C, and in July daytime temperatures average 25.6 °C, so you can expect warm but rarely humid summers.
