Why is IHSM in Kyrgyzstan our first recommendation for 2026?
The International Higher School of Medicine (IHSM) charges 3,250 € a year (about 3,700 USD), has taught medicine in English since 2006 and received state accreditation in 2026 for the full six years. Its second campus in Cholpon-Ata, opened in 2017, sits directly on the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.
On 29 September 2026 I spoke with Dr Makhabat Karagulova, Head of International Affairs at IHSM. Since that day IHSM has been an official contracted partner of Medschool Experts. For our students this means one thing in practice: we handle the student visa, the recognition of the degree and the medical licence after graduation. Dormitory places at IHSM are very cheap and go early in the year, so the earlier you register with us, the better your chances of getting one.
| Worked example: first year at IHSM, 2026/2027 | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition, year one | 3,250 € |
| Student visa | 300 USD (about 260 €) |
| Total before housing and living costs | about 3,510 € |
Why is Foča the cheapest medical faculty in Europe on this list?
The Medical Faculty Foča of the University of East Sarajevo charges 1,750 € per semester, which is 3,500 € a year and 21,000 € for six years. Bosnia and Herzegovina is an EU candidate country, fees are set in euros, and flights to most European capitals take under three hours. Medschool Experts is an official partner of the faculty.
How do Central Asia and the Balkans compare beyond tuition?
Central Asia offers the lowest tuition, with fees mostly set in US dollars. The Balkans cost a little more but bill in euros and are a short flight from home for European students. Both regions teach the full programme in English.
Central Asia
Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan. Tuition from about 2,800 € a year. Fees usually in USD. Visa handled by Medschool Experts.
Balkans
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia. Tuition from 3,500 € a year. Fees in euros. Short flights to the rest of Europe.
Does a low tuition fee say anything about teaching quality?
A low tuition fee at a medical university mostly reflects local salaries, state funding and the cost of living in the country, not the quality of anatomy lectures or clinical rotations. Where you want to practise after graduation matters more than the price: licensing routes such as USMLE in the United States, PLAB in the United Kingdom or national licensing exams exist for graduates of all 20 universities. We match the university to your target country in the free consultation, see our services.

The author's view
When I started in Sofia in 2015, I compared fees for weeks and still chose a university that was not the cheapest. What mattered more was where I wanted to work afterwards. Today I am a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland, so that decision paid off.
If I had to start from zero in 2026 with a tight budget, I would look closely at IHSM. After my call with Dr Makhabat Karagulova on 29 September 2026, I was convinced by the combination of 3,250 € a year, a recent full accreditation and a campus right on Lake Issyk-Kul. For students who want to stay close to Europe, Foča at 3,500 € a year is my answer.
Send me your budget and your target country, and we find your university together in a free consultation.
Summary
- The cheapest English-taught medical universities in 2026 charge from about 2,800 € a year.
- IHSM in Kyrgyzstan costs 3,250 € a year, is an official partner and has a campus on Lake Issyk-Kul.
- The Medical Faculty Foča is the cheapest European option on this list at 3,500 € a year.
- All 20 admit students on the basis of their documents, without a competitive entrance exam.
- A full six-year degree costs between about 16,800 € and 36,000 € in tuition.
Conclusion
Price narrows the list, and your goal after graduation decides it. A student who wants to practise in Europe will weigh Foča differently from a student aiming for a licence in the Gulf or in the United States.
