Study Medicine Abroad for UK Students

Study medicine in Europe in English with your A-levels: no UCAT, tuition from 3,500 € a year and a route back to the UK that we plan with you before you enrol.

For 2026 entry, 25,770 people applied to study medicine in the UK. England funds 8,126 places. Three A grades and a solid UCAT score no longer promise an offer, and Clearing rarely has room for medicine. That is why more UK students now study medicine abroad: six years in English at a European medical university, small groups, patients from the third year. This page shows where you can start, what it costs and how you come back to the UK as a doctor.

Four points decide whether studying medicine abroad works for a UK student: the programme is taught fully in English, your A-levels, IB or Scottish Highers meet the entry rule, the degree counts for GMC registration, and you know before you enrol which training route follows it. We go through all four with you for every university on your shortlist before you pay any tuition.

Why UK students study medicine abroad

Most students who write to us from the UK have the grades. What they lack is a place. Some missed an offer by a few UCAT points. Some hold AAB instead of AAA, and some decided on medicine after a first degree. At a European medical university the decision rests on your school results and, at some faculties, a science entrance test. There is no UCAT, no interview circuit across four cities and no year of waiting to reapply.

  • Entry with A-levels, usually Biology and Chemistry; the IB Diploma and Scottish Advanced Highers work as well
  • No UCAT at any of our partner universities
  • Medicine in English from the first lecture to the state exam
  • Tuition from 3,500 € to 15,000 € a year; six years at Foča cost 21,000 € in tuition
  • Start in the autumn of the same year instead of reapplying through UCAS

Medschool Experts was founded by Marcel Kloos, a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland. He went to Shrewsbury School in England at 16, started dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia at 24 and graduated in 2021. He knows both ends of this route: the British sixth form and the European lecture hall.

Entry requirements to study medicine in Europe with A-levels

  • A-levels with Biology and Chemistry plus a third subject of your choice; grade rules differ from university to university
  • IB Diploma, Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers or BTEC combinations are assessed individually
  • Some universities set a science entrance test in biology and chemistry, and we prepare you for it
  • Graduates apply the same way; details are in our guide to graduate entry medicine
  • A valid passport; we arrange the student visa and residence permit with you after admission

From A-levels to GMC registration: the steps

  • Step 1: Free consultation. We look at your predicted or achieved grades and your budget and name the universities where you can start.
  • Step 2: Admission. We prepare your documents, certified copies and translations and submit the application. You receive the admission letter from the university.
  • Step 3: Visa and arrival. We guide you through the student visa, accommodation and your first days on campus.
  • Step 4: Six years of medicine in English, with the clinical years in the university hospitals.
  • Step 5: GMC registration. A medical degree from an EEA country is a relevant European qualification, which the GMC accepts without PLAB. With a degree from outside the EEA you sit PLAB 1 and PLAB 2.
  • Step 6: Your first NHS post and, after that, specialty training.

Coming back to the UK after studying medicine abroad

Since 5 March 2026 the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act decides who is offered training posts first. Foundation Programme places go first to graduates of UK and Irish medical schools. Graduates of European universities therefore complete their internship year as part of the degree or straight after it, apply to the GMC for full registration and enter the NHS in a post at FY2 level or above. For specialty training in the 2026 round, British citizens with a medical degree from abroad belonged to the prioritised group. These rules can be changed by regulation, so we go through the current position with you before you enrol and again in your clinical years. The full route is in our guide to GMC registration after studying medicine abroad.

A European degree also opens other doors. Graduates go on to specialist training in Germany, Switzerland or Ireland, or take the USMLE for a residency in the USA. Our MedPathway Germany programme is free for our students.

Guides for UK students who want to study medicine abroad

FAQ: study medicine abroad as a UK student

Can I study medicine abroad with A-levels?

Yes. European medical universities accept A-levels for their English-taught programmes. Biology and Chemistry are the subjects that count; the grade rule depends on the university.

Do I need the UCAT to study medicine in Europe?

No. None of our partner universities asks for the UCAT. Some set their own entrance test in biology and chemistry.

Is a European medical degree recognised in the UK?

A medical degree awarded in an EEA country or Switzerland counts as a relevant European qualification. The GMC accepts it for registration without PLAB, whatever your nationality.

How much does it cost to study medicine abroad?

Tuition at our partner universities runs from 3,500 € a year in Foča to 15,000 € a year in Brno. Bulgaria sits at 9,000 € to 10,000 € a year.

Can I use a UK student loan to study medicine abroad?

Student Finance does not fund a full degree at a university outside the UK. Families plan tuition and living costs themselves, which is why the annual fee matters so much when you choose a university.

Can I work in the NHS after studying medicine abroad?

Yes. With GMC registration and a licence to practise you can apply for NHS posts. Foundation Programme places go first to UK and Irish graduates, so most returners start in a post at FY2 level or above.

When should I apply to study medicine abroad?

For an autumn start, applications run from November until the summer. The earlier you apply, the more universities still have places.
