Dentistry Clearing 2026: What Happens on Results Day and the European Alternative

Dentistry Clearing 2026: What Happens on Results Day and the European Alternative

Short answer

Dentistry clearing 2026 in the UK: 880 applications for 65 places at one school. Results-day plan, dentistry in Europe from 6,500 € a year and the GDC route.

In October 2015 I sat in my first anatomy lecture at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Medical University of Sofia. I was 24 and had studied law before. Around me sat students from Greece, Germany, Britain and the Emirates, a year group drawn from more than 60 countries. I graduated in 2021 and am today a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland, running Medschool Experts from Bern.

Dentistry is the narrowest door in UK higher education. A single dental school can receive more than ten applications for every place. On results day the question is rarely whether clearing will help. It is what to do instead, and how fast.

A European dental degree is that alternative for hundreds of students every year, and Directive 2005/36/EC gives it a clear legal route.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Is there dentistry in UCAS clearing in 2026?

Dentistry in UCAS clearing is close to non-existent in 2026. UK dental schools have small, fixed cohorts, often between 60 and 150 students, and they fill them through firm and insurance offers before results day ends. Clearing opened at 13:00 on Thursday 13 August 2026, and dentistry vacancies, where any appear, are usually gone within the first hours.

The numbers explain why. For 2026 entry, the University of Birmingham received 880 applications for BDS Dental Surgery, interviewed 320 applicants, made 118 offers and had 65 places, up to 3 of them for international students. That is more than 13 applications per place at one school.

Across medicine and dentistry together, UCAS counted 134,210 applications for 2026 entry, 12 per cent more than in 2025. Dental school acceptances reached a record, yet the gap between applicants and places grew rather than closed.

What happens to a dentistry applicant on results day

On A-level results day in 2026, UCAS Hub showed each dentistry applicant one of three outcomes at 8:00: a confirmed place at the firm choice, a confirmed place at the insurance choice, or no place. Applicants who missed their offer by a grade could still be accepted if the dental school had space, which in dentistry is rare.

Applicants without a place moved into clearing. Most then saw biomedical science, dental hygiene and therapy, or oral health science in the clearing lists, not dentistry itself. Those courses are good degrees. They are not a dental degree, and the step from dental hygiene to dentistry later is long.

Results day is also a day when families take decisions under pressure. That is why a plan written down in July is worth more than any call made in August.

The results-day plan: hour by hour

The results-day plan for a dentistry applicant in August 2026 had four steps: check UCAS Hub at 8:00, call the firm-choice dental school at once if the offer was narrowly missed, look at clearing from 13:00 without expecting dentistry, and contact Medschool Experts the same day to keep a European dentistry start in October or February open.

Before results day: passport, school-leaving certificates and predicted grades scanned. A budget agreed at home for five years.

On results day: the call to your dental school first. Then clearing. Then the European option.

In the following week: documents translated, faculty chosen, housing searched.

The order matters. A UK place, if it exists, comes first. The European plan runs in parallel and costs nothing if a UK place appears. If it does not, there is still time for an autumn start.

Dentistry in Europe: where and how much in 2026

English-taught dentistry in Europe costs between about 6,500 and 24,250 euros a year in tuition in 2026. Bulgaria charges 10,000 euros a year at Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna. Serbia's University of Belgrade charges 6,500 euros. Masaryk University Brno charges 16,000 euros and Charles University Prague 24,250 euros. Polish and Hungarian faculties sit around 15,000 to 18,000 euros.

Placement through Medschool Experts at our 25+ partner universities is independent of school-leaving grades: neither A-level results nor a UCAT score decides the place. Which faculty fits your budget, preferred start and later plans depends on your profile, which we look at in a free consultation. The partner universities page shows the faculties by country.

Dentistry programmes in Europe usually last five years, a few run to five and a half or six. All include the local language as a subject, because patients in the clinic speak it from the third year on.

What five years of dentistry in Europe cost: a worked example

Five years of dentistry at the Medical University of Plovdiv in Bulgaria cost around 100,650 euros all-in at 2026 fee levels. Tuition is 50,000 euros over five years. Dentistry adds its own costs: instruments, materials, loupes, scrubs and books of about 6,100 euros. Rent, food and transport of about 690 euros a month add 41,400 euros.

Food, utilities, transport, 390 euros a month23,400 euros

Dentistry is more expensive than medicine at most faculties, and the reason is physical. A phantom-head lab, a bench for each student, burs, gypsum and composite that are used up rather than borrowed. That is a real cost, and it belongs in the budget from the start.

For comparison, UK home tuition is 9,535 pounds a year in 2025/26 and is financed by a student loan. The European route is paid by the family or a private loan. Tuition is due per year or per semester, never as one lump sum.

Recognition: Directive 2005/36/EC and the GDC route back to the UK

A dental degree from an EU member state is recognised across the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC, and qualifications listed in Annex V of the directive go through a near-automatic recognition process with the General Dental Council in 2026. Graduates from outside the EU, for example Serbia, register with the GDC through the Overseas Registration Exam, Part 1 and Part 2.

Existing GDC routes in 2026. Current arrangements for EEA qualifications were extended in 2023 for five years, so the rule in force at graduation is checked when the route is planned.

Both are existing routes that dentists use every year. The UK government reviewed the arrangements for EEA qualifications in 2023 and extended them for five years, so the rule in force in your graduation year is what counts. We check that rule when we plan the route with you, and the ORE route remains open in either case.

The same European diploma also opens practice across the EU. Graduates of the Sofia faculty practise in Germany, Switzerland, Greece and Scandinavia.

My Sofia years: what dentistry in Europe looks like day to day

Dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia from 2015 to 2021 meant anatomy and chemistry in the first two years, then the phantom-head lab, then patients. In the preclinical years I spent many afternoons at the bench preparing teeth on models. From the third year we treated patients under supervision, and Bulgarian became necessary every day.

Groups were small. Practical courses had around ten students per assistant, and most exams were oral. That format is demanding, and it is also why European dental graduates are used to explaining what they do.

Two things need planning before the start: the language and the budget. The language comes with the clinic, step by step. The cost of living in Sofia is lower than in any British university city I know.

Dental hygiene and therapy in clearing: a route into dentistry?

Dental hygiene and therapy is one of the courses that often appears in UK clearing in August 2026 when dentistry does not. It is a three-year degree that leads to registration as a dental hygienist or therapist with the GDC. It is a good profession. It is not a shortcut to becoming a dentist.

A hygienist who later wants to become a dentist applies again, usually as a graduate, and starts a five-year dental degree. Counting the years, a student who takes dental hygiene in 2026 and then dentistry would qualify as a dentist around 2034. A student who starts dentistry in Europe in October 2026 qualifies in 2031.

Take the hygiene place if it is the profession you want. If the goal is dentistry, the faster route is the dental degree itself.

Already in another degree? Credit transfer into dentistry

Many applicants who miss dentistry in August 2026 take a place in biomedical science, dental hygiene and therapy or a related course. That keeps an option open rather than closing one. Completed modules in anatomy, physiology or biochemistry can count towards a dental degree in Europe later.

Medschool Experts is the leading expert worldwide in credit recognition and frequently achieves placement into year 4 or year 5 at top universities. Which path works depends on your transcript, so start with the university transfer page and send it to us.

International perspective: how this works in other countries

Dentistry is one of the most selective degrees in almost every country, and each system has its own second route. In Ireland, dentistry places are allocated through the CAO by school-leaving points, and Irish students who miss out often start dentistry in Bulgaria, Czechia or Hungary in the same autumn. In Germany, dentistry places go through a central system that weighs school grades and a test, and thousands of German students study dentistry abroad.

In Italy, access to Odontoiatria now runs through the semestre filtro introduced in 2025, with national exams after the first semester deciding who continues. In the United States, dentistry is a graduate degree after a bachelor's, and the DAT exam can be retaken. In the Gulf states, public dental colleges admit by high-school grades with very few places, and many Saudi, Emirati and Kuwaiti students study dentistry in Europe.

Across these systems the pattern is the same as on UK results day. National places are few, and English-taught European programmes are where many future dentists begin.

The author's view

I chose dentistry in Sofia in 2015 after law, and I never regretted it. The degree I earned there is the same European qualification as a degree from Vienna or Copenhagen, and it led me to recognition as a dentist in Switzerland.

What I tell British families today is simple. Dentistry is a craft, and you learn it with your hands at a bench and then at a chair. Where that bench stands matters less than how many hours you spend at it. In Sofia we had many.

My assessment: if dentistry is the goal, do not spend a year waiting for a clearing place that almost never comes. Start in Europe, plan the route back to the UK from the first semester, and make the five years count.

Summary

  • Dentistry in UK clearing 2026 is close to non-existent, because dental schools fill small cohorts through firm and insurance offers.
  • The University of Birmingham had 880 applications, 118 offers and 65 places for BDS 2026 entry.
  • English-taught dentistry in Europe costs about 6,500 to 24,250 euros a year in tuition in 2026.
  • Five years in Plovdiv cost around 100,650 euros all-in, instruments and materials included.
  • Placement through Medschool Experts is independent of A-level grades and the UCAT.
  • EU dental degrees under Directive 2005/36/EC go through near-automatic GDC recognition under current rules, and non-EU graduates use the ORE.

Conclusion

Results day in dentistry is decided long before August for most applicants. A plan that includes a European dental school turns a missed offer into a five-year route with a clear end.
