English-Taught Medical Degrees in Germany 2026: UMCH Hamburg, EUC Frankfurt and What They Cost
20.10.2026
Short answer
English-taught medicine in Germany 2026: UMCH Hamburg at 14,900 € and EUC Frankfurt at 12,500 € per semester, degree, structure, living costs and alternatives.
Can you study medicine in English in Germany in 2026?
Yes. In 2026 two private campuses in Germany teach the full medical degree in English: UMCH in Hamburg, a branch campus of the George Emil Palade University in Târgu Mureș in Romania, and the Frankfurt campus of European University Cyprus. Both run six years, and both award a European medical diploma recognised automatically in Germany under Directive 2005/36/EC.
The state medical faculties in Germany teach in German. Their places are allocated through the national system. The two English-taught campuses select their own students, set their own fees and award their diplomas through their parent universities abroad. For a student who wants to stay in Germany, close to family, and study in English, this combination is unique in Europe.
How much does UMCH Hamburg cost in 2026?
UMCH Hamburg charges 14,900 euros per semester for EU and EEA students in 2026/2027, or 29,800 euros a year. A one-time enrolment fee of 4,500 euros and an application fee of 595 euros come on top. Over twelve semesters the fees total about 183,900 euros. Non-EU students pay 17,400 euros per semester.
UMCH offers one option that changes the arithmetic considerably. Students can complete years three to six at the main campus in Târgu Mureș at 3,000 euros per semester. Two years in Hamburg and four in Romania bring tuition down to about 89,600 euros including the one-off fees, and the diploma is the same. Living costs in Târgu Mureș are a fraction of Hamburg rents.
How much does EUC Frankfurt cost in 2026?
European University Cyprus charges 12,500 euros per semester for medicine at its Frankfurt campus in 2026, or 25,000 euros a year. Over twelve semesters tuition totals 150,000 euros, plus an application fee of 200 euros. All fees are billed in euros, so there is no exchange-rate risk for students from the euro area.
Frankfurt is therefore around 2,400 euros per semester cheaper than Hamburg on tuition. Frankfurt rents, though, are among the highest in Germany. A one-bedroom flat outside the centre costs about 1,017 euros a month in 2026, so the living-cost side of the budget weighs more than in Hamburg.

Where is the degree awarded?
The diploma is awarded by the parent university abroad, not by the German campus. UMCH graduates receive the medical diploma of the George Emil Palade University in Târgu Mureș, Romania. EUC Frankfurt graduates receive the Doctor of Medicine of European University Cyprus in Nicosia. Both are EU member-state diplomas listed for automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC.
For practice in Germany this works the same way as for any EU graduate. The graduate applies for the medical licence (Approbation) with the authority of the federal state, shows German language skills for patient contact, and receives the licence without a knowledge test. The same diploma opens Austria, Switzerland and the rest of the EU under the same rules.
How are the programmes structured?
Both programmes follow the classic European six-year structure in 2026: two pre-clinical years with anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and histology, three clinical years with internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, neurology and psychiatry, and a sixth practical year of full-time rotations. Teaching is in English throughout.
UMCH adds German in the clinical section, because patients at the Hamburg teaching hospitals speak German. That is useful for anyone who plans to work in Germany afterwards. EUC Frankfurt runs its clinical training at hospitals in Frankfurt and partner hospitals in Germany, Cyprus and Greece. In both cases students spend their clinical years in the German hospital system, learn its documentation and ward routines, and build contacts for their first job.
That last point is the real advantage of a German campus. The tuition is high. The integration into German hospitals is something no programme abroad can offer in the same way.
What does it cost to live in Hamburg and Frankfurt?
Living costs in 2026 are about 1,250 euros a month all-in for a student in Hamburg, and in Frankfurt about 1,077 euros a month excluding rent, plus around 1,017 euros for a one-bedroom flat outside the centre. A shared flat in either city brings the monthly budget down by several hundred euros.
In Hamburg a one-bedroom flat costs about 1,168 euros in the centre and 840 euros outside it, and a monthly public transport pass 63 euros. Students who live with family in the Rhine-Main area or near Hamburg cut the largest item completely. Many students in Frankfurt share a flat in a suburb with an S-Bahn connection, which keeps rent at 600 to 750 euros.
How do families finance English-taught medicine in Germany?
Most families finance the German campuses in 2026 through a mix of savings, a bank education loan and support from relatives, paying tuition per semester rather than as one sum. At UMCH that is 14,900 euros twice a year, at EUC Frankfurt 12,500 euros twice a year. Planning the full six-year amount before enrolment is the single most important step.
Three practical points help. First, the semester rhythm spreads the load, and the UMCH route through Târgu Mureș cuts the second half of the bill to 3,000 euros per semester. Second, students in Germany can work part-time during the semester breaks, although medical study leaves little room during term. Third, housing is the flexible item: a shared flat or the family home changes the six-year total by tens of thousands of euros.
One limitation should be stated plainly. A family that cannot cover at least the first two years without a loan should look closely at the partner universities abroad before signing in Hamburg or Frankfurt.
{{cta}}What does six years of medicine cost? A worked example
Six years of English-taught medicine in Germany cost about 274,000 euros in Hamburg and about 300,000 euros in Frankfurt with an own flat in 2026, tuition and living included. The same degree at English-taught partner universities abroad costs about 110,000 euros in Sofia and about 57,500 euros in Foča. The table shows the calculation, with no repeated year.
| Item, six years (2026) | UMCH Hamburg | EUC Frankfurt | MU Sofia | Foča |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | 178,800 € | 150,000 € | 60,000 € | 21,480 € |
| One-off fees | 5,095 € | 200 € | small | small |
| Living costs, 72 months | 90,000 € (1,250 €/month) | 150,700 € (2,093 €/month, own flat) | 50,400 € (700 €/month) | 36,000 € (500 €/month) |
| Total | ≈ 273,900 € | ≈ 300,900 € | ≈ 110,400 € | ≈ 57,500 € |
Three levers change these totals. In Hamburg, moving years three to six to Târgu Mureș saves about 94,000 euros in tuition alone. In Frankfurt, a shared flat instead of an own flat saves roughly 25,000 to 30,000 euros. And for every family, the comparison with partner universities abroad shows the scale: the difference between Frankfurt and Sofia is about 190,000 euros for the same EU-recognised medical degree.
How do German campuses compare with English-taught universities abroad?
English-taught partner universities of Medschool Experts in Bulgaria, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina charge between about 3,580 and 10,000 euros a year in 2026: 10,000 euros at the Medical Universities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas, 9,000 euros at Medical University Pleven, 6,000 euros at the University of Niš and about 3,580 euros at the Faculty of Medicine Foča.
What the German campuses offer for the higher price is location: clinical years in German hospitals, no move abroad, and the family within reach. What the faculties abroad offer is the same six-year European structure at a third or a tenth of the tuition. Diplomas from Bulgaria are EU diplomas with automatic recognition. Graduates of Niš and Foča reach practice in Germany through the knowledge test, which our graduates take every year.
For many families the decision is a budget question first and a lifestyle question second. Both answers are good ones.
International perspective: how this works in other countries
Branch campuses of foreign medical schools are not a German invention. In the United Kingdom, several overseas universities have run clinical programmes in British hospitals for years, and students from the Gulf and Asia train there while holding a diploma from another country. In the Caribbean, medical schools teach basic sciences on the islands and send students to clinical rotations in the United States.
In Austria, the private Danube Private University in Krems teaches dentistry and medicine at fees similar to Hamburg. In Italy, private universities in Rome and Milan teach medicine in English at 20,000 euros a year and more. In Cyprus, the University of Nicosia Medical School combines years in Nicosia with clinical training abroad, and Medschool Experts places students in a route with two clinical years in Zurich.
The pattern is the same in every country. A programme close to home, in English and inside a strong hospital system costs more. A programme further away costs less and teaches the same European curriculum. The German campuses sit at the top of the price range because they combine all three advantages: English teaching, German hospitals and an EU diploma.
Who are English-taught medical degrees in Germany suited to?
UMCH Hamburg and EUC Frankfurt suit students who want to study in English, stay in Germany for family or personal reasons, train in German hospitals, and have financing in place for 150,000 to 184,000 euros in tuition plus German living costs. Career changers and students who already work in Germany often fit this profile well.
Students with a smaller budget find the same degree structure at partner universities abroad, and the mixed UMCH route through Târgu Mureș is a strong middle option. The author's view
In Sofia, between 2015 and 2021, I met many German students who would have stayed at home if they could have studied in English there. Hamburg and Frankfurt now give them that option. When families in Bern ask me whether the price is worth it, I answer with a question: what is it worth to you that your child does the clinical years in a German hospital and comes home on Friday evening?
My assessment: if the financing is secure, both campuses are good choices, and the UMCH route with years three to six in Târgu Mureș is the one I find most underrated. If the budget is tight, I would not stretch it for the German address. Sofia, Niš or Foča teach the same medicine, and a degree finished without debt is worth more than one finished with it.
Summary
- Two private campuses teach medicine fully in English in Germany in 2026: UMCH Hamburg and the Frankfurt campus of European University Cyprus.
- UMCH charges 14,900 euros per semester for EU students plus 5,095 euros in one-off fees; EUC Frankfurt charges 12,500 euros per semester.
- UMCH graduates receive a diploma from UMFST Târgu Mureș, EUC graduates from European University Cyprus; both are recognised automatically under Directive 2005/36/EC.
- UMCH students can complete years three to six in Târgu Mureș at 3,000 euros per semester.
- Six years all-in cost about 274,000 euros in Hamburg and about 300,000 euros in Frankfurt with an own flat.
- English-taught partner universities abroad charge between about 3,580 and 10,000 euros a year for the same six-year structure.
Conclusion
English-taught medicine in Germany is a premium option with a clear benefit: an EU diploma, English teaching and clinical years in German hospitals, without leaving the country. The price is high, and the financing needs to be solid before the first semester.

Frequently asked questions about English-taught medical degrees in Germany
Which universities teach medicine in English in Germany?
In 2026 two private campuses teach the full medical degree in English in Germany: UMCH in Hamburg, a branch of the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology in Târgu Mureș, and the Frankfurt campus of European University Cyprus. State medical faculties in Germany teach in German.
How much does UMCH Hamburg cost?
UMCH Hamburg charges 14,900 euros per semester for EU and EEA students in 2026/2027, plus a one-time enrolment fee of 4,500 euros and an application fee of 595 euros. Twelve semesters total about 183,900 euros in fees. Completing years three to six in Târgu Mureș at 3,000 euros per semester lowers the total considerably.
How much does EUC Frankfurt cost?
European University Cyprus charges 12,500 euros per semester for medicine at its Frankfurt campus in 2026, which is 150,000 euros over twelve semesters, plus an application fee of 200 euros. Living costs in Frankfurt add roughly 1,000 to 2,100 euros a month depending on whether the student shares a flat.
Is a degree from UMCH or EUC recognised in Germany?
Yes. Both diplomas come from EU member states, Romania and Cyprus, and are recognised automatically in Germany under Directive 2005/36/EC. Graduates apply for the medical licence with the authority of the federal state and show German language skills, without a knowledge test.
