  • You may sit the exam in a course no more than three times
  • The Faculty of Medicine decides on applications for a further attempt
  • A student who has not passed the exam for a semester within three semesters of starting it ordinarily loses the study right
  • Medicine students delayed by more than four semesters in total ordinarily lose the study right

  • Way out: Medschool Experts organises transfers from UiO to English-taught partner universities in Europe, often with entry into a higher year

Failing medical school at the University of Oslo does not mean the end of your medical career. The six-year profesjonsstudiet i medisin (cand.med.) has clear rules on attempts and delays, and knowing them early gives you room to decide.

This guide explains the UiO rules, what to do after a failed exam and how a transfer works. Medschool Experts helps students in exactly this situation.

Failing medical school at the University of Oslo

Key facts

  • Programme: profesjonsstudiet i medisin (cand.med.), 12 semesters, six years
  • Attempts: no more than three per course
  • Further attempt: decided by the Faculty of Medicine on application
  • Semester rule: exam for a semester passed within three semesters of starting it
  • Total delay: more than four semesters ordinarily ends the study right
  • Grade appeal: three weeks from publication in Studentweb
  • Transfer help: Medschool Experts, consultation free

In short: At the University of Oslo a medicine student may sit the exam in a course no more than three times. A student who is delayed too far loses the study right. Medschool Experts organises transfers from UiO to partner universities in Europe; the consultation is free.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo runs the six-year cand.med. programme, taught almost entirely in Norwegian. Two laws and regulations shape what happens after a failed exam: the Universities and University Colleges Act (universitets- og høyskoleloven) and the Regulations on studies and examinations at the University of Oslo, with supplementary rules from the faculty.

A failed exam is common in a demanding programme. What matters is how many attempts you have used and how far behind you are.

UiO medicine exam rules at a glance

In short: UiO allows three attempts per course in medicine. A new exam is offered after each ordinary exam, a grade appeal must be filed within three weeks, and falling behind by more than four semesters in total ordinarily ends the study right. Medschool Experts helps students plan the next step.

TopicRule at UiO Medicine
Attempts per courseThree
RetakesNew exam after each ordinary exam; failed students are registered automatically
Progress to a new semesterEarlier semester exams must be passed first
Time to pass a semesterWithin three semesters of starting it
Total delayMore than four semesters ordinarily ends the study right
Grade appealThree weeks after the grade is published
Consequence of losing the study rightAdmission revoked; reapplication needed, attempt limits still apply

Exam attempts at UiO medicine

In short: A UiO student may not sit the exam in a course more than three times. The limit counts across programmes, including after readmission. The Faculty of Medicine decides whether to grant a further attempt. Medschool Experts advises on the alternatives before the last attempt.

The limit of three attempts applies to each course in total. It also applies after you are admitted again to the same or another programme that includes the course. If you have a strong reason, you can apply for an extra attempt through the faculty. The faculty decides.

In medicine, a new exam is scheduled after each ordinary exam. Students who failed are registered automatically. A failed exam in a joint semester of Medicine, Dentistry and Clinical Nutrition counts for all three programmes, because the exams are identical.

You may not sit an exam in a new semester until you have passed the exams of the earlier semesters.

Delays and loss of study right at UiO

In short: At UiO Medicine a student who has not passed the exam for a semester within three semesters of starting it ordinarily loses the study right. A total delay of more than four semesters has the same result. Medschool Experts organises transfers for students at risk; the consultation is free.

The rules are set in section 7-3 of the Regulations on studies and examinations at UiO. Three things can end the right to study in medicine:

  • You have used the maximum number of attempts in a compulsory course.
  • You have not passed the exam for a semester by the third semester after you started it. With documented illness, you can apply to take the exam in the fourth semester.
  • You are more than four semesters delayed in total.

Leave approved by the faculty does not count as delay. The faculty grants exemptions only in special circumstances, such as documented illness.

Revocations usually happen by mid-October for the autumn semester and mid-March for the spring semester. You receive advance notice and a chance to respond. You can appeal a revocation to the central appeals committee of UiO.

If the study right is revoked, you can apply again in the usual way. The attempt limits still apply to courses you have already tried.

Illness, absence and leave of absence

In short: At UiO Medicine, a legitimate withdrawal because of illness needs a medical certificate postmarked within three days of the exam. A legitimate absence does not count as an attempt. Leave of absence is granted for up to one year at a time. Medschool Experts can plan a transfer around a leave.

Medicine has no deadline for withdrawing from an exam. Valid reasons are illness before or during the exam and another serious circumstance, such as a death in the close family. If you fall ill during the exam, see a doctor the same day. The certificate must show the exam date and be postmarked no later than three days after the exam.

With a valid reason, the absence does not count as an attempt, and you get a rescheduled exam. Without one, you get no rescheduled exam and are moved to a lower year group, with lower priority for the next year group.

Leave of absence is granted on application for up to one year at a time. The deadlines are 15 May for the autumn semester and 1 November for the spring semester. Normally it is not granted before the second semester is completed. Maternity leave and leave due to illness are exceptions.

Students with a disability or health condition can apply for special exam arrangements through the faculty's student information centre.

Appealing a grade at the University of Oslo

In short: A University of Oslo grade appeal must be filed in Studentweb within three weeks of publication. Two new examiners, one external, reassess the paper without seeing the original grade. The new grade can be higher, lower or the same. Medschool Experts advises on what to do while you wait.

You normally receive an answer within one month. If the new result differs by two or more grades from the original, an additional assessment follows. Your grade is hidden in Studentweb while the appeal is pending, and you can withdraw the appeal until the case is settled. You cannot appeal the grade from an appeal. You can ask for an explanation of it.

Oral and practical examinations cannot be appealed where the performance is not documented. Exam results are published within three weeks.

An appeal does not stop the clock. Plan for the next exam in parallel.

Why students get stuck in UiO medicine

In short: Students at the University of Oslo usually get stuck because of pace, fit with the teaching format, language or personal circumstances, not ability. Medschool Experts regularly helps students in this situation continue Medicine at a partner university in Europe.

The cand.med. programme is dense, and the exam for each semester must be passed before you move on. Some students need a different teaching format. Others lose a semester to illness or a family situation. International students may also find a programme taught almost entirely in Norwegian demanding.

None of this says anything about your suitability for medicine. It says the current setting may not fit. A change of setting often solves it.

Switch early: a checklist

In short: A student at the University of Oslo should ask for a transfer assessment before the last attempt, not after it. Credits passed, documents and deadlines decide how much time is saved. Medschool Experts checks every case individually, and the consultation is free.

  • Count the attempts you have used in each course. The limit is three.
  • Check how many semesters you are behind. More than four ordinarily ends the study right.
  • Order your transcript and the course descriptions of everything you have passed.
  • Note the dates of the next exam and the appeal deadline.
  • Do not wait for a revocation letter. Revocations usually come by mid-October or mid-March.
  • Book a free consultation with Medschool Experts before you decide.

Your next four weeks

In short: After a failed exam at the University of Oslo, use four weeks to collect documents, decide on an appeal, register for the new exam and book a transfer consultation. Medschool Experts handles the application work abroad.

  • Week 1: read the result, request an explanation if needed and note the three-week appeal deadline.
  • Week 2: decide on the appeal, confirm your registration for the new exam and order your transcripts.
  • Week 3: talk to the faculty about your attempts, delays and any exemption.
  • Week 4: book the free consultation with Medschool Experts and compare the options.

Returning to Norway after a transfer

In short: A medical degree from an EU or EEA country is recognised in Norway under Directive 2005/36/EC, and the Norwegian Directorate of Health grants the authorisation. Medschool Experts plans the transfer with the way home in mind.

Norway is part of the EEA, so the directive on the recognition of professional qualifications applies. A degree from an EU or EEA university lets you apply for authorisation as a doctor in Norway. We plan your transfer so that the degree you finish is the one you need.

In short: Continuing after UiO does not have to be expensive. Medschool Experts partner universities offer English-taught Medicine and Dentistry from €1,750 tuition per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester.

The author's view

The rule I find most useful in Oslo is the simplest: three attempts per course. It gives you a clear count, and a count lets you plan. What hurts students is waiting until the third attempt to ask what else exists.

I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015 at 24 and graduated in 2021. I am the founder and owner of Medschool Experts and a federally recognised dentist. I know how it feels to start late and to doubt the path. Check your options early, and decide with numbers in front of you.

Summary

Failing medical school at the University of Oslo comes down to three rules. You may sit the exam in a course no more than three times. You must pass each semester's exam within three semesters of starting it. And a total delay of more than four semesters ordinarily ends the study right.

A grade can be appealed within three weeks. Legitimate illness does not count as an attempt. A transfer to an English-taught programme at one of our 25+ partner universities in Europe is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it.

Conclusion

Do not wait for the last attempt or a revocation letter. Check your attempts, count your delay and ask for a transfer assessment while you still have options. The consultation with Medschool Experts is free: book it here.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester.
