Medical Schools in Europe with a February Intake 2027: Start in Winter Instead of Waiting a Year
20.10.2026
Short answer
Medical schools in Europe with a February intake 2027: which countries start in spring, a five-month plan from October and how 7 months of waiting are saved.
Which countries offer a February intake for medicine in 2027?
For 2027, February or spring intakes for English-taught medicine are offered at selected universities in Poland and Malta, at many private universities in Turkey and North Cyprus, and at universities in Malaysia. Caribbean medical schools start in January and May as a matter of routine. Most faculties in Bulgaria, Romania and the Western Balkans keep a single autumn intake.
The table summarises the 2026/27 calendar from the Medschool Experts university directory, which covers 483 universities in 48 countries. Out of these, seven countries run a spring intake in January or February. Seven is not many. It is enough to make a winter start a real plan rather than a hope.
| Region (2026/27) | February or spring intake for English-taught medicine | Typical months |
|---|---|---|
| Poland | at selected universities | February |
| Malta | at selected programmes | February |
| North Cyprus and Turkey | at many private universities | February |
| Caribbean | standard, several intakes a year | January, May, August or September |
| Malaysia | at selected universities | January, February |
| Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina | main intake in autumn; pre-med and foundation options bridge the gap | September, October |
A February intake is never a university-wide rule. One faculty may run it for medicine and not for dentistry, another the reverse, and places in a spring cohort are fewer than in autumn. Which university with a February 2027 intake fits a specific profile depends on that profile, and Medschool Experts checks it in a free consultation.
Who benefits from a February start in medicine?
A February 2027 start helps four groups most: school leavers whose results arrived too late for an autumn application, applicants who missed their national admission cycle, students who left another degree in its first semester, and families from outside the EU whose visa timeline could not be met for September. For all of them, February turns a lost year into a lost semester.
Late results are the most common reason. In many systems the final grades come out in July or even August, and by then autumn programmes abroad are often full and visa appointments booked out. A student who uses August and September to decide can still plan calmly for February.
The second group is defined by national calendars. In the United Kingdom, UCAS applications for medicine close in October for the following year, so a student who decides late in the final school year has missed a full cycle. In Italy, the semestre filtro rankings for medicine arrive around the turn of the year, and a student who is not placed has until February to start somewhere else. In the Gulf states, school results in June and July often leave too little time for autumn visas.
Medschool Experts does not place students at British or Irish universities. For these applicants the February route leads to our European and Caribbean partner universities, where placement is independent of high-school diploma grades.
Timeline from October 2026 to February 2027
A February 2027 start needs about five months of preparation: October to choose the country and programme, November for school certificates, translations and legalisation, December for the application and confirmation of the place, January for the visa, housing and flights, and February for the first lecture. EU citizens can compress January, because they need no visa.
The critical items are documents, not the decision. Certified translations of a school-leaving certificate take one to three weeks, an apostille another one to four weeks depending on the country. A non-EU student visa can take four to eight weeks once the appointment is booked.
Short version: decide in October. A decision in December still works for EU citizens, and for non-EU applicants only when the documents are already translated. Medschool Experts prepares the sequence with each student, including translations and the visa file.
How much time does a February intake save?
A February 2027 start saves about seven months compared with waiting for September 2027. With a six-year medical degree, a February starter graduates in early 2033, while a September starter graduates in mid 2033. The saving repeats at the end: specialist training, the first salary and the medical licence all move forward by the same seven months.
Seven months sounds modest. Measured against a medical career it is not. It is seven months of earning a doctor's salary at the end, or seven months of specialist training completed earlier.
Cost example: February start versus waiting for September
With 2027 planning values of 12,000 € tuition a year and 600 € a month for living costs, a February start costs roughly 4,000 € less in gap-month living costs than waiting for September. Tuition is the same in both cases. The larger difference comes at the end of the degree: seven months of a junior doctor's salary arrive earlier, worth more than 30,000 € gross in Germany.
| Cost item, 2027 planning values | February start | Waiting until September |
|---|---|---|
| Months without study between results and start | 4 to 6 | 11 to 13 |
| Living costs during the gap (600 € a month) | about 2,400 to 3,600 € | about 6,600 to 7,800 € |
| Tuition, first year (12,000 € planning value) | 12,000 € | 12,000 € |
| Graduation, six-year degree | early 2033 | mid 2033 |
| First doctor's salary | about seven months earlier | baseline |
How the numbers are built: a student whose results arrive in July or August and who starts in February waits four to six months. Waiting for September 2027 means eleven to thirteen months. At 600 € a month, the difference in living costs alone is about 4,200 €. A first-year assistant doctor in Germany earns more than 60,000 € gross a year in 2026, so seven months are worth more than 30,000 € gross.
The 12,000 € tuition figure is a planning value for 2027, not the price of a specific university. Fees at spring-intake universities range widely by country. Our partner universities in Bulgaria charge 9,000 to 10,000 € a year, but they start in autumn.
{{cta}}How does a February start fit the clinical calendar?
A February 2027 cohort runs its own calendar from day one: semester one from February to June, a summer break, semester two from September to January. The preclinical years, clinical rotations and the final practical year follow in the same rhythm, so graduation falls in winter or early spring 2033 rather than in summer.
Hospitals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland hire assistant doctors all year round, so a graduation in early 2033 creates no waiting period. In the United States the residency year starts in July, and graduates who aim for the USMLE route plan their exams around that date. Caribbean schools build their January and May cohorts precisely for this calendar.
One sober limitation: spring cohorts are smaller. The year group is more personal, which many students like, but the choice of elective courses can be narrower in some semesters.
Pre-med and foundation programmes: bridging to September
For students who prefer a university with an autumn-only intake, a pre-med or foundation programme starting in January or February 2027 fills the months until September. These programmes teach biology, chemistry, physics and medical English, typically for one or two semesters, and lead straight into the first year of medicine in autumn 2027.
The bridge has a second use. Students who left school some years ago, or whose school did not teach chemistry to a high level, start the first year of medicine with the basics fresh. Medschool Experts includes pre-med options in every placement plan; the degree programmes themselves are on the universities page.
A bridge costs a semester's fees and living costs. A clear plan for September in return. For our partner universities in Bulgaria, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the autumn 2027 intake is the natural target.
International perspective: how this works in other countries
Spring intakes in medicine are common outside continental Europe. Caribbean medical schools run two or three intakes a year, usually in January, May and August or September, because their students follow the United States calendar and the USMLE route. The University of Health Sciences Antigua, a partner university of Medschool Experts, runs two semesters per calendar year with clinical rotations at affiliated hospitals in the United States.
Malaysia starts medicine at several universities in January or February as well as in autumn, a legacy of a school year that ends in November. Australia and New Zealand begin the academic year in late February or March, so for them a February start is the normal case, not the exception.
The United States starts medical school in July or August, once a year. In the United Kingdom, medicine starts in September or October, and Medschool Experts does not place students there. Germany starts most medical programmes in October and a few in April. Seen against these systems, a February intake in Poland, Malta, Turkey or North Cyprus is less unusual than it looks from inside Europe. It is the European version of a calendar that half the world already uses.
How to choose a February programme
Choose a February 2027 programme by four points: recognition of the degree where you want to work, total cost over six years, language of instruction and the size of the spring cohort. Then choose between a direct February start and a pre-med bridge into a September intake. Both save time compared with waiting a full year.
The decision is easier in writing. Note the month you would start, the month you would graduate and the total cost for each option. Then send the documents. The author's view
In Sofia between 2015 and 2021 there was no February door. I had started at 24, after law, so I knew exactly what a lost year feels like at that age. In the placement work since then, the November enquiry has become one of the most common we receive.
That is why I like February intakes. They are not a second-class option. They are a sensible answer to calendars that do not fit real lives, results that come late and visas that take time.
My assessment from Bern: if you are reading this in October or November, you are not late. You are exactly on time for February. That is my view after more than 500 placements, not a statistic.
Summary
- In 2026/27, seven countries in the Medschool Experts directory run a January or February intake for English-taught medicine.
- Poland, Malta, Turkey, North Cyprus and Malaysia offer February intakes at selected universities; the Caribbean starts in January and May.
- A February 2027 start saves about seven months compared with waiting for September 2027.
- Preparation takes about five months, from October to February, with the visa as the longest step for non-EU students.
- February graduates finish in early 2033 and can start work at once, because hospitals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland hire year-round.
- Pre-med and foundation programmes from January or February bridge the time to a September intake.
Conclusion
A missed autumn intake does not have to cost a year. A February start, or a pre-med bridge into September, turns the wait into study time and moves graduation forward by roughly seven months.

Frequently asked questions about February intakes for medical school in Europe
Are there medical schools in Europe with a February intake in 2027?
Yes. In 2027, selected universities in Poland and Malta, many private universities in Turkey and North Cyprus, and several universities in Malaysia offer a February or spring intake for English-taught medicine. Caribbean medical schools start in January and May. Most faculties in Bulgaria, Romania and the Western Balkans start only in autumn.
When should I start preparing for a February 2027 intake?
Start in October 2026. School certificates need certified translations and often an apostille, which together take two to seven weeks. Non-EU students then need four to eight weeks for the student visa. EU citizens need no visa, so a decision in November or early December can still work.
Is a February start worse than a September start?
No. A February cohort follows the same curriculum, sits the same exams and receives the same diploma as a September cohort. The only differences are the calendar, with graduation in winter instead of summer, and the cohort size, which is usually smaller in spring. Both lead to a full EU medical degree.
Can I study dentistry with a February intake?
Yes, at some universities. February intakes exist for dentistry as well as medicine, though not every faculty offers both in spring. A university may run a February intake for one programme and not the other. Medschool Experts checks which dentistry programmes start in February 2027 for each applicant.
What is a pre-med or foundation programme?
A pre-med or foundation programme is a preparatory course of one or two semesters in biology, chemistry, physics and medical English. Programmes that start in January or February lead into the first year of medicine in September. They suit students who prefer an autumn-only university or want to refresh the sciences first.
Does a February start affect recognition of the degree?
No. Recognition depends on the university and the country of study, not on the month of enrolment. A medical diploma from an EU member state is recognised automatically across all 27 EU countries under Directive 2005/36/EC, whatever the intake. Graduates outside the EU follow the licensing route of their destination country.
How does Medschool Experts help with a February start?
Medschool Experts checks which of its 25+ partner universities and which February 2027 intakes fit the applicant's profile, prepares the document file and translations, handles the application and supports the visa for non-EU students. Placement is independent of high-school diploma grades. The first step is a free consultation.
