Studying Medicine in Burgas: Bulgaria's Black Sea University (2026)
20.10.2026
Short answer
Study medicine in English in Burgas on the Black Sea: 10,000 € tuition a year, about 600 € monthly living costs in 2026, six years and an EU-recognised degree.
Why study medicine in Burgas in 2026?
Studying medicine in Burgas in 2026 means a six-year English-taught degree at Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University, a state university in Bulgaria's fourth-largest city on the Black Sea, for 10,000 euros tuition a year. The diploma is a Bulgarian, and therefore EU, medical degree, and living costs in Burgas sit below those of Sofia and Varna.
Three things make Burgas different from the large Bulgarian medical universities. The English-taught programme is young, about four years old in 2026, so year groups are small and teachers know their students by name. The city is compact and quiet outside the summer months. And the sea is a ten-minute walk from most student flats.
Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. Tuition, rent and groceries in Burgas are now all paid in euros, which makes the budget easy to plan for students from the eurozone.
What does Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University offer in English?
Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University in Burgas teaches human medicine in English in 2026 as a six-year master's programme. Its Faculty of Medicine trains doctors under the same Bulgarian national curriculum and state examinations as the medical universities in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Pleven, and the diploma carries the same legal value.
A young programme has a clear practical effect. Lecture groups in Burgas are small compared with the older faculties, and practical classes in anatomy, histology and later on the wards run in compact groups. Students who learn best with direct contact to the teacher often value exactly that.
The university is a multi-faculty state university with technical, natural science and social science faculties alongside medicine, which gives the campus a mixed student body. Which start date and programme fit your profile is something we look at in a free consultation.
How much does it cost to study medicine in Burgas?
Tuition for English-taught medicine at Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University in Burgas is 10,000 euros per year in 2026, or 60,000 euros over six years. With living costs of about 600 euros a month and four flights home a year, the full degree costs around 107,000 euros. Fees are paid per year or per semester.
| University (2026/2027) | City | Tuition per year | Tuition over 6 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University | Burgas | 10,000 € | 60,000 € |
| Medical University of Sofia | Sofia | 10,000 € | 60,000 € |
| Medical University of Varna | Varna | 10,000 € | 60,000 € |
| Medical University of Plovdiv | Plovdiv | 10,000 € | 60,000 € |
| Medical University of Pleven | Pleven | 9,000 € | 54,000 € |
Tuition in Burgas is therefore level with the three largest Bulgarian medical universities. Pleven is 1,000 euros a year cheaper. The real difference between Burgas and Sofia or Varna lies in rent: Burgas is a smaller city, and outside the summer months flats are easy to find.
Worked example, six years of medicine in Burgas (2026 prices): tuition 6 x 10,000 euros = 60,000 euros. Living costs 72 months x 600 euros = 43,200 euros. Flights 4 return trips a year x 150 euros x 6 years = 3,600 euros. Total: 106,800 euros, about 17,800 euros a year. Plan a reserve of around 2,000 euros for books, a laptop and the first deposit.
A sober point: 107,000 euros is a large sum, and most families combine savings, income and sometimes a loan. Spread over twelve semesters it becomes a monthly figure that can be planned.
What is a realistic monthly budget in Burgas in 2026?
A realistic monthly budget for a medical student in Burgas in 2026 is about 600 euros including rent. A one-bedroom flat in the centre or near the Sea Garden costs around 280 euros a month outside the tourist season. Food, utilities and phone add about 240 euros, and city buses and bicycles cover most distances.
| Item (2026, per month) | Burgas | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, one-bedroom flat | 280 € | Sign a 12-month lease |
| Utilities and internet | 60 € | Air conditioning in summer |
| Groceries and canteen | 160 € | Fresh fish, local markets |
| City transport | 10 € | Many cycle |
| Phone | 15 € | Local prepaid plan |
| Books and materials | 20 € | Higher in year 1 |
| Leisure | 55 € | Beach, cafés, Sea Garden |
| Total | 600 € | Planning value 2026 |
One local detail matters. Burgas is a summer destination, and short-term rents rise in July and August. Students who sign a twelve-month lease in September keep the low winter price all year. Our team helps with exactly that before arrival.
How is the six-year medicine programme in Burgas structured?
The six-year medicine programme in Burgas follows the Bulgarian national curriculum in 2026: two preclinical years with anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology and biochemistry, a third year with pathology, pharmacology and propaedeutics, clinical years four and five on hospital wards, and a final internship year that ends with Bulgarian state examinations.
Clinical teaching takes place in hospitals in Burgas, the main regional medical centre for south-eastern Bulgaria. The catchment area includes the whole coast from Nessebar to Tsarevo and the towns inland, so the hospital sees a broad mix of patients. In summer the number of emergency cases from tourists rises sharply.
Summer practice is part of the Bulgarian curriculum as well. After the clinical years students complete compulsory hospital placements during the summer, and in Burgas these often take place in the same regional hospital where they were taught. The rest of the summer stays free, and the beach is around the corner.
Because the programme is young, the first international cohorts are now moving through the clinical years. The structure is fixed by national law, so a student in Burgas follows the same sequence of subjects and examinations as a student in Sofia.
Do you need Bulgarian to study medicine in Burgas?
Bulgarian is a compulsory language subject in the English-taught medicine programme in Burgas in 2026, taught in the first years. Lectures and exams are in English. From the clinical years onwards patients on the wards speak Bulgarian, so the language course prepares students to take a history and communicate with patients.
Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which most students read after a few weeks. Speaking fluently with patients takes longer and costs several hours a week in the first three years, a real limitation worth planning for. In my own years in Sofia, the students who practised Bulgarian at the market and in cafés, not only in class, had the easiest time on the wards.
{{cta}}Is a medical degree from Burgas recognised in the EU?
Yes. A medical degree from Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University is a Bulgarian medical diploma and is recognised automatically in all 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland under Directive 2005/36/EC. Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007, and the same recognition rules apply to every Bulgarian medical faculty.
The graduate applies for the licence in the country where they want to work, submits the diploma with the certificate of conformity issued in Bulgaria and proves language skills in that country's language. No additional medical examination applies within the EU. I went through the Swiss recognition myself after Sofia, and a Burgas graduate follows the same route. Outside Europe, graduates take the licensing route of the destination country, such as the USMLE for the United States.
What is Burgas like as a student city?
Burgas is Bulgaria's fourth-largest city with about 200,000 inhabitants in 2026, a port on the Black Sea surrounded by three large lakes. The Sea Garden, a long park along the beach, runs directly from the city centre to the sea. Students live in a compact city where the beach, the university and the old centre are all within cycling distance.
The surrounding area is one of the most beautiful parts of Bulgaria. Sozopol, with its old town on a peninsula, is 30 minutes south. Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage town, is 30 minutes north. The lakes around Burgas are a bird sanctuary on the Via Pontica migration route, and in spring and autumn birdwatchers come from across Europe.
The climate is mild by Bulgarian standards: hot summers cooled by the sea breeze, and winters milder than in Sofia, with little snow. Burgas Airport is ten kilometres from the centre and has direct flights to many European cities in summer and connections via Sofia all year.
About 200,000 residents. Euro since 1 January 2026. Airport 10 km from the centre.
Sozopol and Nessebar 30 minutes away. Three lakes, Sea Garden, long beaches.
International perspective: how this works in other countries
Smaller medical schools in coastal or regional cities are a familiar model across Europe. In Croatia, the University of Split teaches medicine in English on the Adriatic coast, and in Romania, Ovidius University of Constanța teaches medicine on the Black Sea, about 250 kilometres north of Burgas. Both combine a regional hospital network with a city that is calmer than the capital.
In Bulgaria itself, the Medical University of Varna is the long-established Black Sea faculty, larger and older than Burgas, at the same tuition of 10,000 euros a year in 2026. Sofia and Plovdiv also charge 10,000 euros, Pleven 9,000 euros. In Hungary, regional faculties such as Pécs and Szeged teach in English at clearly higher tuition, often above 16,000 euros a year.
Outside Europe the model differs. In the United States, medicine is a four-year graduate degree after a bachelor's, so eight years at university and much higher costs. In Italy, students sit the national Medicine admission procedure and study mainly in Italian. Burgas offers something none of these systems combine: an EU degree, English teaching, small groups and the sea.

The author's view
When I started in Sofia in 2015, Burgas did not teach medicine in English. That the city now does, with a programme of about four years, shows how quickly the English-taught landscape in Bulgaria has grown since my graduation in 2021.
My view today, after placing students across Bulgaria: Burgas is a strong choice for students who want small groups and a calm city, and who are happy to be part of a young programme. Students who want a large, long-established faculty choose Varna or Sofia instead. All of them earn the same EU diploma.
My assessment: for many students the quality of daily life decides how well they study for six years. In Burgas that daily life includes the sea. That is a personal view from six years in Bulgaria and from our placement work, not a ranking.
Summary
- Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University in Burgas teaches medicine in English in a programme that has existed for about four years.
- Tuition is 10,000 euros a year in 2026, the same as Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv; Pleven charges 9,000 euros.
