Failing Medical School in Algeria? What to Do When You Cannot Repeat Again (2026)

Failing Medical School in Algeria? What to Do When You Cannot Repeat Again (2026)

Short answer

Failing medical school in Algeria? Year repeated once, five years in the first cycle or excluded from a module: what happens now and how a transfer helps.

At a glance

  • Medicine in Algeria takes seven years: three years of first cycle, three clinical years and one internship year
  • You can repeat the same year only once, and you may not spend more than five years in the first cycle
  • To pass a year of the first cycle you need a compensated annual average of 10 out of 20 with no eliminatory mark below 5
  • Missing more than a third of tutorials and practicals excludes you from the module, even with justified absences, and without a catch-up exam
  • After a clear failure in the first year the jury can reorient you out of Medicine
  • Coming back from abroad: your diploma needs an equivalence from the Ministry of Higher Education, requested online and examined case by case
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

You entered Medicine with one of the highest baccalaureate averages in your wilaya. Now the deliberation list is out, your annual average is below 10, and you have already used your one repeat.

Below you find how progression works in the first cycle and in the clinical cycle, which rules end a medical degree, why capable students get stuck, and how a transfer to a medical school abroad brings you back to Algeria with a diploma that can be made equivalent.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Seven years

In short: Medical studies in Algeria take seven years. Years 1 to 3 form the first cycle (PCEM), Years 4 to 6 the clinical cycle, and Year 7 is the internship with a report. You enrol for one year at a time and re-enrol at the start of every academic year.

Two language levels are part of progression: French at level B2 before the end of Year 2 and English at level B2 before the end of Year 3. The marks do not count towards the annual average, but the levels have to be validated.

Passing a year

In short: In the first cycle progression is annual. You pass with a compensated general average of at least 10 out of 20 and no eliminatory mark. The eliminatory mark is 5 out of 20, per module and per integrated teaching unit. Where practicals exist, the module average is theory times four plus the practical mark, divided by five.

If you fail the normal session, you sit the catch-up session at the end of the year in every module below 5 and in the modules below 10. You keep what you already passed. An unjustified absence from an exam is a zero with no replacement exam. A justified absence is also a zero, but it gives you the catch-up session, and you have 72 hours to hand in the proof.

You can consult your paper and the marking scheme and appeal within two working days. Papers from the catch-up session cannot be consulted.

Rules that end it

In short: You can repeat the same year only once, and you may not stay longer than five years in the three-year first cycle. After a clear failure in the first year, the deliberation jury can reorient you to another field. Academic leave can be granted only once in the whole course of study.

Attendance is the rule most students underestimate. If you miss more than a third of the tutorials and practicals of a module in the first cycle, you are excluded from that module, even if every absence is justified, and you have no right to the catch-up exam. One hospital stay in the wrong month can therefore cost the year.

A repeat year keeps your passed modules, but you redo the practical placement and everything you did not pass. Time spent under a disciplinary exclusion counts towards your course of study, so it runs against the five years.

Clinical cycle

In short: From Year 4 progression is modular. Every module must be passed separately with at least 10 out of 20, and there is no compensation between modules. You move up if all modules are passed or if the modules you still owe add up to no more than 12 weeks. The internship is open only when all three years of the first cycle and every clinical module are passed.

The debts travel with you. A student who carries 12 weeks into the next year sits those modules on top of a full clinical programme, and one more failed rotation blocks the year.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in Algeria who struggle rarely lack ability, they entered with some of the highest baccalaureate averages in the country. The usual reasons are the switch to studying in French, very large cohorts, burnout, depression or anxiety, illness, a family crisis and exam anxiety.

Depression shows up quietly, as lectures replayed without taking in a word. It is treatable. Academic leave exists for such situations, but you get it once, you must apply before the first exams, and after a medical leave you return only with the opinion of a medical expert named by the university.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: If exams keep going wrong, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. A transfer while you are still enrolled and your passed modules are recent saves time and stress.

  • You are repeating a year and the average is again below 10.
  • You are in your fourth or fifth year in the first cycle.
  • You were excluded from a module for absences.
  • You carry clinical debts close to 12 weeks.
  • The jury has proposed a reorientation.

If one of these applies to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the deliberations.

Next four weeks

  • Week 1: collect your transcript for every year. You are entitled to it at the end of each academic year.
  • Week 1 to 2: count your years in the first cycle and your repeats, and check your absences per module.
  • Week 2 to 3: collect the programme with hours for every passed module and the attestations of your placements.
  • Week 3 to 4: note that the original of your baccalaureate attestation is released only when you finish or abandon your studies at your own request, against a signed discharge. Plan that step with us before you take it.
  • Before the catch-up session: book a free transfer consultation and compare staying with a transfer and a planned return to Algeria.

Transfer abroad

In short: A transfer from an Algerian faculty to an English-taught medical school in Europe is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcripts and module programmes. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

For Algerian students the place abroad comes with a student visa. The admission letter, proof of funds and housing have to be ready in time, and we prepare that file with you.

Returning to Algeria

In short: Yes, you can come back, but not automatically. A medical diploma from abroad needs an equivalence from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The request is filed online only, since 10 February 2022 on the ministry's PROGRES platform. The ministry examines each file individually: the status of the university, the content and length of the programme, the admission conditions and your whole path.

The file is strict on form, and most of it is decided while you are still a student:

  • Authentication: the diploma must be authenticated by the supervising authority of the country that issued it and validated by the Algerian consular services there.
  • Full record: baccalaureate, transcripts for the whole course, the detailed programme and the attestations of your placements.
  • Residence: a copy of the residence permit that covers the period of your studies, plus passport and consular card.
  • Translation: where needed, a sworn translation of the file, endorsed by the Algerian consulate.

The Algerian benchmark is seven years including the internship year. We choose your university so that its programme and placements can be documented and compared, we make sure you register with the consulate from the start, and we tell you before you enrol what your return will look like.

Costs

In short: Studying Medicine in Algeria costs only a registration fee, but a second failed repeat costs the whole degree. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your transcripts and module programmes in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Algeria. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021, and today nobody asks how old I was in my first semester. Algerian students who write to us often lost their year to an average of 9.8 or to absences during an illness. Neither says anything about them as future doctors. What decides the return is paperwork that begins on the first day abroad, and that is why we plan it before you leave.

Summary

In Algeria the first cycle is decided by three rules: an annual average of 10 with no mark below 5, one repeat per year and five years at most for three years of study. Absences above a third exclude you from a module without a catch-up exam, and the clinical cycle allows debts of 12 weeks at most.

A transfer to a medical school abroad is possible. The return needs an equivalence, requested online and examined case by case, and the file starts on the day you enrol. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

Do not wait for the deliberation list of your repeat year. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which universities accept the modules you have already passed and how you come back to Algeria as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.
