Failing Medical School in Argentina? What to Do After Losing Regular Status (2026)
02.10.2026
Short answer
Failing medical school in Argentina? Regular status lost or finals failed three times: what happens now and how a transfer abroad leads back with a valid degree.
Regular status
In short: To remain a regular student you must pass a minimum number of subjects within a set period. At the largest public university three conditions apply: at least two subjects passed in every two consecutive academic years, failed finals below 33% of the subjects in the plan, and the whole degree completed within double its planned length. A student who misses one of them loses regular status and must apply for readmission.
A readmission commission decides on the application. It looks at whether most failed finals date from the first subjects and whether you have since improved. Each national university has its own rule, so read the regulations on regular status of your faculty.
Finals
In short: Coursework that is passed gives the right to sit the final exam for a limited time. A final failed three times, or coursework that expires, usually means taking the whole subject again. Anatomy, histology and physiology are where most students lose years.

In short: Medical students in Argentina who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are paid work beside the degree, overcrowded courses, oral finals with high failure rates, the economy, depression or anxiety and a system that leaves the pace entirely to the student.
None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.
Transfer abroad
In short: A transfer from an Argentine faculty to an English-taught medical school abroad is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your certified record and the programmes of your subjects in translation. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.
A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Check my transfer optionsReturning to Argentina
In short: Yes, you can come back. Argentina has two routes for a medical degree from abroad. If the country where you studied has a recognition agreement with Argentina, the national education authority validates the degree. If not, a national university revalidates it and may require exams or additional subjects. With the validated degree you obtain your registration from the Ministry of Health.
- Agreement or not: the route depends on the country, so this is checked before you choose the university.
- Documents: the degree, the record and the programmes, all with apostille. Keep the programme of every subject from the first year.
- Residency: with the registration you can sit the unified residency examination like graduates in Argentina.
We choose your university with the validation route in mind and tell you before you enrol what your return will look like.

Book a free transfer consultationCosts
In short: The public university in Argentina is free, so a degree abroad is a real cost. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year. Set that against the years of income you lose when a six-year degree takes ten.
How we help
Medschool Experts reviews your record in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and the visa file, and plans your route back to Argentina. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.
The author's view
When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021. A free university is a gift, and it can also keep a student for ten years without a degree. If you pay for a place abroad, you pay for a fixed timetable and a class that finishes together. For some students that is worth more than free tuition.
Summary
In Argentina the public university costs nothing and selects through its exams. Regular status, failed finals and years lost in the first cycle decide who graduates.
A transfer abroad is possible, and the return runs through validation of the degree and registration with the Ministry of Health. We plan that route home with you from the first day.
