Short answer

Failing medical school in Brazil? Jubilamento, cancelled enrolment or fees you cannot pay: what happens now and how a transfer abroad leads back via Revalida.

At a glance

  • Every Brazilian medical course has a maximum completion period, commonly nine years for the six-year course
  • A student who exceeds it loses the place. Brazilians call this jubilamento
  • Federal universities also cancel enrolment for repeated failure or for failing every subject in a semester
  • At private faculties the monthly fee is often the real reason students stop
  • Coming back from abroad: the Revalida exam in two stages, revalidation of the diploma by a public university and registration with the regional council of medicine
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

You have failed the same subject for the third time, and the coordinator has shown you the article on cancellation of enrolment. At a private faculty the same conversation is usually about unpaid monthly fees.

Below you find how the time limit and cancellation work, and how a transfer to a medical school abroad brings you back to Brazil as a registered doctor.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Maximum completion period

In short: Each university sets a maximum period for completing the course in its pedagogical project, commonly one and a half times the normal length, which is nine years for Medicine. A student who cannot finish within it has the enrolment cancelled.

Cancellation of enrolment

In short: Besides the time limit, many federal and state universities cancel enrolment after repeated failure in the same subject, after failing all subjects in a semester more than once, or after abandoning the course. The grounds and the number of chances are in the undergraduate regulations of your university. Before the decision you can ask the course board for an extension with a study plan.

At a private faculty the rules are milder and the price is higher. Monthly fees for Medicine are often well above €1,500, and every repeated subject is paid again.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in Brazil who struggle rarely lack ability, they passed one of the most competitive entrance exams in the country. The usual reasons are money, exhaustion after years of preparatory courses, depression or anxiety, studying far from home and paid work beside a full-time course.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Transfer abroad

In short: A transfer from a Brazilian faculty to an English-taught medical school abroad is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your academic record and syllabi in translation. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Returning to Brazil

In short: Yes, you can come back. A medical diploma from abroad is revalidated through Revalida, the national examination run by the federal institute for educational studies. It has two stages: a theoretical exam and a clinical skills exam. With both passed, you choose a public university that revalidates your diploma, and you register with the regional council of medicine in your state.

  • Theoretical exam: since 2026 it consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. The pass mark of the first edition in 2026 was 59 points.
  • Clinical skills exam: ten stations across the five major areas of medicine, held over a weekend.
  • Frequency: the examination is held every semester. In 2026 the theoretical exam took place on 7 June and 13 September.
  • Second chance: only candidates who pass the theory are admitted to the stations. A candidate who fails the stations stays admitted to them for the two following editions without repeating the theory.
  • Diploma: the university abroad must be recognised in its own country, and the diploma must carry the apostille.

The exam follows the Brazilian curriculum, including public health and the unified health system. We choose your university with Revalida in mind and tell you before you enrol what your return will look like.

Costs

In short: Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year. A whole year there can cost less than a few monthly fees at a private faculty in Brazil.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your academic record in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and the visa file, and plans your route back to Brazil. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021. Many Brazilians go abroad for Medicine by price alone and meet Revalida unprepared six years later. I would rather tell a student on the first call what that exam demands than send congratulations at enrolment and silence at graduation.

Summary

In Brazil the maximum completion period and the cancellation rules of each university end a medical course, and at private faculties the monthly fee does. A new place requires a new entrance exam.

A transfer abroad is possible, and the return runs through Revalida, revalidation and the regional council. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at 25+ partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad independent of your high school diploma grades: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
