Failing Medical School in Indonesia? What to Do When You Face Drop Out (2026)
02.10.2026
Short answer
Failing medical school in Indonesia? Drop out, time limit or national competency exam: what happens now and how a transfer abroad brings you back as a doctor.
Evaluation and drop out
In short: Indonesian faculties of medicine check progress at fixed points, typically after the first two and the first four semesters and at the end of the study period. A student below the required number of credits or grade point average at one of these points is dropped from the programme.
The thresholds are in the academic regulations of your university. They differ between state and private faculties, so read your own.
Two stages, two limits
In short: The degree has an academic stage of about three and a half to four years and a clinical clerkship stage of about two years. Each has its own maximum duration. At the end stands the national competency examination for medical students, with a computer-based test and a clinical skills exam. Without it there is no degree.
Students who fail this exam repeatedly remain enrolled, pay fees and cannot work. When the time limit of the clinical stage ends, the faculty drops them.

Book a free transfer consultationWhy students get stuck
In short: Medical students in Indonesia who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are block exams every few weeks, money and tuition debt, living far from family, depression or anxiety and long hours in the clerkship stage.
None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.
Transfer abroad
In short: A transfer from an Indonesian faculty to an English-taught medical school abroad is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcript and block descriptions in English translation. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.
A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

In short: Yes, you can come back. Indonesian citizens who graduated abroad go through a competency evaluation under the Health Law of 2023. It consists of an administrative assessment, including the equivalence of your diploma, and an assessment of your practical ability. Depending on the result you complete an adaptation period at a health facility in Indonesia before you are registered.
- Diploma equivalence: issued by the ministry responsible for higher education. The university abroad must be recognised in its own country.
- Competency: the evaluation compares your training with the Indonesian standard. Keep your curriculum, logbooks and clerkship records.
- Registration: after a successful evaluation you receive your registration certificate and, like Indonesian graduates, complete the internship programme.
We choose your university with these steps in mind and tell you before you enrol which documents you must collect during your studies.

In short: Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year. Compare that with the entrance contribution and semester fees of a private faculty in Indonesia.
How we help
Medschool Experts reviews your transcript in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and the visa file, and plans your route back to Indonesia. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.
The author's view
When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021. Being dropped after four semesters feels final because the letter says so. Your passed blocks still exist on paper, and a university abroad reads them without the label your faculty put on you.
Summary
In Indonesia fixed evaluations, time limits for both stages and the national competency exam decide whether you graduate. At a private faculty every extra semester costs full fees.
A transfer abroad is possible, and the return runs through equivalence, competency evaluation, adaptation and registration. We plan that route home with you from the first day.
