Failing Medical School in Luxembourg? What to Do After the First-Year Ranking (2026)

Failing Medical School in Luxembourg? What to Do After the First-Year Ranking (2026)

Short answer

Failing medical school in Luxembourg? No place after the first-year ranking, under 25 ECTS or stuck at a partner university: your options and the way back.

At a glance

  • Luxembourg offers only the first three years of Medicine: the Bachelor in Medicine at the University of Luxembourg
  • Failing medical school in Luxembourg usually happens at the end of the first year, in a ranking for a limited number of places
  • Passing the year is not enough if your rank is too low
  • First-year students who earn fewer than 25 ECTS are excluded from the programme, and a bachelor must be completed within ten semesters
  • After the bachelor you continue at a partner university in France or Belgium, under the exam rules of that country
  • Way out: transfer to a medical school in another EU country, often into a higher year
  • Coming back: an EU medical degree is recognised in Luxembourg, and the Minister of Health authorises you to practise
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

In Luxembourg you can pass every exam of the first year and still be out. The places for the second year are counted, the candidates are ranked, and whoever stands below the line has no seat, at home or at a partner university.

Below you find how the ranking works, which rules of the University of Luxembourg can end your studies, what applies once you continue in France or Belgium, and how a transfer to a medical school in another EU country brings you back to Luxembourg as a doctor.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Bachelor only

In short: The University of Luxembourg offers a three-year Bachelor in Medicine with 180 ECTS, taught in French, German and English. The clinical years are not offered in Luxembourg. Graduates of the bachelor continue at partner universities in France or Belgium.

The number of onward places is fixed by agreements between the countries. For students in Luxembourg that means two selection points: the ranking after year one and the allocation of places abroad after the bachelor.

First-year ranking

In short: At the end of the first year the University of Luxembourg ranks all students by the average of both semesters. The places in the second year in Luxembourg and at partner universities in France, Belgium and Germany are allocated by rank. A validated first year does not guarantee a place.

The university says so openly: even students who pass the ranking examination may find no place to continue. For them, Medicine through Luxembourg ends after two semesters, with 60 valid ECTS in hand.

Those credits are worth something elsewhere. A medical school in another EU country assesses what you have passed, not where you stood in a list.

PointRule in Luxembourg
ProgrammeBachelor in Medicine, 3 years, 180 ECTS
After year oneRanking, limited places for year two
Minimum in year one25 ECTS, otherwise exclusion from the programme
Maximum duration10 semesters for a bachelor of 180 ECTS
After the bachelorPartner universities in France or Belgium

Exclusion rules

In short: At the University of Luxembourg a first-year bachelor student who earns fewer than 25 ECTS in the first two semesters is excluded from the programme. A full-time bachelor of 180 ECTS must be completed within ten semesters. Whoever exceeds the maximum duration loses the enrolment.

  • Check your credits in February: after the winter exams you can see whether 25 ECTS are still within reach.
  • Appeal: a complaint against an exam result goes to the university within the short deadline given with the results, and a decision to exclude you can be taken to the administrative court.
  • Adjustments: with a documented disability or chronic illness you can request reasonable accommodations for exams.

After the bachelor

In short: Once you continue in France or Belgium, the examination law of that country applies to you. In France repeated years are limited and the national EDN requires 14 out of 20 on core knowledge. In Belgium the university monitors your study progress and can refuse enrolment.

The details are in our articles on failing medical school in France and failing medical school in Belgium.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in Luxembourg who miss the ranking rarely lack ability. Many pass every exam and still stand a few places too low. Other reasons are a first year taught in three languages, burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.

Lectures switch between French, German and English, and the exams follow. A student who is strong in two of the three languages loses marks in the third that have nothing to do with medicine.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: In Luxembourg the best moment to plan a transfer is spring of the first year, before the ranking is published. Credits earned up to the summer count abroad. After the ranking or an exclusion a transfer is still possible.

  • Your winter results put you in the lower half of the year.
  • You validated the first year and received no place.
  • You will not reach 25 ECTS.
  • You are stuck at a partner university in France or Belgium.

If one of these applies to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the ranking.

Next four weeks

  • Week 1: read the study regulations of the bachelor and add up your ECTS.
  • Week 1 to 2: ask the programme office where you stand and how many places were available last year.
  • Week 2 to 3: if anxiety, low mood or language load play a part, contact the student support service of the university.
  • Week 3 to 4: order your transcript and collect the course descriptions of all passed courses.
  • Before the ranking is published: book a free transfer consultation and compare waiting with a transfer and a planned return to Luxembourg.

Transfer within the EU

In short: A transfer from the Bachelor in Medicine in Luxembourg to a medical school in another EU country is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcript and course descriptions. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

The state financial aid for higher education from Luxembourg is paid for studies abroad as well, including a loan component for tuition fees.

Returning to Luxembourg

In short: Yes, you can come back. A medical degree from another EU country is recognised in Luxembourg under Directive 2005/36/EC. The Minister of Health grants the authorisation to practise once you hold a specialty, general practice included, and you register with the Collège médical.

Specialist training in general practice and in a few other fields is offered at the University of Luxembourg, the rest abroad. What matters is that your degree gives full access to the profession in the country where you graduate, and we choose your university with exactly that in mind.

Costs

In short: The Bachelor in Medicine in Luxembourg costs €400 per semester, and rents in Luxembourg are among the highest in the EU. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your transcript and course descriptions in a free transfer consultation, finds EU medical schools that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Luxembourg. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

A ranking that sends home students who passed their year is the hardest rule in this whole series. Those students have 60 valid ECTS and nowhere to use them in their own country.

I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015 at 24 and graduated in 2021. My advice to students in Luxembourg is to treat the first year as credits you own. If the list in July goes against you, they are the starting capital for a place in another EU country.

Summary

Failing medical school in Luxembourg mostly means standing too low in the ranking after the first year, missing 25 ECTS or running out of semesters. After the bachelor, the exam rules of France or Belgium take over.

A transfer to a medical school in another EU country is possible, the degree is recognised in Luxembourg, and the Minister of Health authorises you to practise. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

Do not wait for the ranking list in July to think about a second route. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which EU universities accept the courses you have already passed and how you come back to Luxembourg as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at 25+ partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad independent of your high school diploma grades: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
