Short answer

Failing medical school in Morocco? Repeated year, missed re-enrolment or lost place: what happens now and how a transfer abroad brings you back as a doctor.

At a glance

  • Medicine in Morocco now takes six years in 12 semesters: two years of first cycle, four years of second cycle
  • Enrolment is annual, and a student who does not re-enrol before 30 September is struck off the faculty list
  • Every semester has modules that must all be validated, with one catch-up session
  • Faculties limit how often a year of the first cycle can be repeated
  • Private faculties in Morocco take transfers into Year 2 or 3 by competition, at fees of about €7,500 a year and more
  • Coming back from abroad: your diploma needs an equivalence, usually with a complementary internship in a Moroccan university hospital
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

You passed the baccalaureate threshold and the entrance competition, and now a handful of modules stands between you and the next year. The catch-up session is over, the faculty speaks of repeating, and your family asks what happens next.

Below you find how the six-year programme is built, where students lose their place, what the options inside Morocco cost, why capable students get stuck, and how a transfer to a medical school abroad brings you back to Morocco with a diploma that can be made equivalent.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Six-year programme

In short: Since the 2022/23 academic year, the diploma of doctor of medicine in Morocco takes six years instead of seven, in 12 semesters. The first cycle covers Years 1 and 2. The second cycle covers four years, and the last two are full-time hospital clerkships. Only students who were in Years 5, 6 and 7 in 2022/23 stayed on the old seven-year plan.

Part-time clerkships run from the 5th to the 8th semester, 18 weeks per semester. Full-time clerkships run from the 9th to the 12th semester, with 22 weeks per semester in Year 5 and 45 weeks in Year 6. Whoever falls behind in the first cycle reaches the hospital a year late, and the clinical groups do not wait.

Where places are lost

In short: Enrolment in a Moroccan medical faculty is annual. You must renew it at the start of every academic year before 30 September, or you are struck off the list of students. Each semester has five to six modules, all of which must be validated, with exams in the first semester, the second semester and one second session.

Faculties also limit how often a year of the first cycle can be repeated. In many of them a second failure in the same year ends your enrolment unless the dean grants a derogation. The exact number is in the regulations of your faculty, so ask the student office for it in writing.

Many students also lost time without failing anything: the boycott of 2023/24 against the shortened programme stopped teaching and exams for most of a year. If you came out of it behind your cohort, you count as a repeater on paper.

Options in Morocco

In short: Private medical faculties in Morocco accept students from public or private Moroccan faculties into Year 2 or Year 3. You need the earlier years fully validated and you pass a pre-selection and a written competition. Fees are about €7,500 a year and more.

This route is closed to exactly the students who need it: without a validated year there is nothing to transfer. A new start in a public faculty means the entrance competition again, with a baccalaureate that is no longer from the current year.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in Morocco who struggle rarely lack ability, they passed a pre-selection threshold of 12 out of 20 and a national competition. The usual reasons are the jump to studying in French, lecture halls with several hundred students, burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis and exam anxiety.

Depression shows up quietly, as lectures replayed without taking in a word. It is treatable, and most faculties now have a listening unit for students. Use it before the second session, not after it.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: If modules keep going wrong, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. A transfer while you are still enrolled and your validated modules are recent saves time and stress.

  • You are repeating a year of the first cycle.
  • You failed the second session again and need a derogation.
  • You missed the re-enrolment deadline and were struck off.
  • You lost a year in 2023/24 and never caught up.

If one of these applies to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the next session.

Next four weeks

  • Week 1: ask the student office in writing how many repeats your faculty allows and where you stand.
  • Week 1 to 2: request your transcripts for every year and the attestations of your validated clerkships.
  • Week 2 to 3: collect the programme with hours for each validated module. A receiving university credits only what it can compare.
  • Week 3 to 4: have your baccalaureate and transcripts certified and prepared for legalisation.
  • Before you re-enrol for a repeat year: book a free transfer consultation and compare staying with a transfer and a planned return to Morocco.

Transfer abroad

In short: A transfer from a Moroccan faculty to an English-taught medical school in Europe is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcripts and module programmes. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

For Moroccan students the place abroad comes with a student visa. The admission letter, proof of funds and housing have to be ready in time, and we prepare that file with you.

Returning to Morocco

In short: Yes, you can come back, but not automatically. A medical diploma from abroad needs an equivalence, granted by order of the Minister of Higher Education after the sectoral commission for health sciences has examined your file. In most cases the commission asks for a complementary internship in a Moroccan university hospital, followed by an exam. After that you register with the Order of Physicians.

Three conditions decide the outcome, and all three are fixed on the day you choose your university:

  • Recognised university: the diploma must come from an institution that the Moroccan government recognises. Morocco keeps lists for countries such as Romania, Ukraine and Russia.
  • Scientific baccalaureate: Morocco admits only holders of a scientific baccalaureate to Medicine, and the commission applies the same rule to your file.
  • Length of the internship: it depends on the university. One year is common. Since early 2025, graduates of some Ukrainian and Russian universities have to complete two and a half to three years.

The file itself takes about six months and needs certified and legalised copies of the diploma, transcripts for every year, clerkship attestations and the thesis. We choose your university with these conditions in mind and tell you before you enrol what your return will look like.

Costs

In short: A public faculty in Morocco costs almost nothing, a private one about €7,500 a year and more. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your transcripts and module programmes in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Morocco. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021, and today nobody asks how old I was in my first semester. Moroccan students who write to us have often lost a year they could not influence and now blame themselves for the second one. What counts for your return is the university you choose next, because Morocco measures your diploma by it. Choose it with the equivalence in mind.

Summary

In Morocco a medical degree is lost quietly: modules that are not validated, a year repeated once too often, a re-enrolment deadline missed. The private faculties take only students whose earlier years are validated, and a new start in a public faculty means the competition again.

A transfer to a medical school abroad is possible. The return needs an equivalence, and the university you choose decides how long the complementary internship in Morocco will be. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

Do not re-enrol for another repeat year before you know your options. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which universities accept the modules you have already validated and how you come back to Morocco as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.
