Failing Medical School in Russia? What to Do After Expulsion for Academic Debt (2026)
02.10.2026
Short answer
Failing medical school in Russia? Academic debt, failed commission retake or expulsion: what happens now and how a transfer abroad leads back to practice.
Academic debt
In short: Under the federal law on education, an unsatisfactory result or an unexcused absence at an interim assessment is an academic debt. The student may retake the subject no more than twice, within deadlines the university sets and within one year. For the second retake the university forms a commission.
A student with a debt is moved to the next year conditionally. The debts travel with you, and the anatomy or biochemistry of the second year can end your studies in the third.
Expulsion
In short: Students who do not clear their academic debt within the deadlines are expelled for failing to fulfil their duties under the curriculum. The law grants reinstatement within five years to students who left at their own request. After an expulsion for debt, reinstatement follows the university's own rules, depends on free places and is mostly offered on a fee-paying basis.

In short: Medical students in Russia who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are the load of the first three years, work beside the degree, depression or anxiety, illness and, for men, the pressure that the loss of student status brings.
None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.
Transfer abroad
In short: A transfer from a Russian university to an English-taught medical school abroad is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your academic certificate and syllabi in translation. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile and on visa rules for your destination.
A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.
Visa requirements for Russian citizens differ strongly between countries. We tell you in the consultation which destinations are realistic for you at the moment.

In short: Yes, you can come back, in three steps. Your foreign degree is recognised in Russia, automatically where an international agreement or the government's list of foreign universities covers it, and otherwise by the federal education supervision service. You then pass the special examination for people with foreign medical education at the federal health supervision service. After that you complete accreditation as a specialist.
- Recognition: check before you enrol whether the country and the university fall under an agreement or the list.
- Special examination: it tests whether your training corresponds to the Russian state standard, in several stages.
- Documents: degree and supplement with legalisation or apostille and notarised translation.
We choose your university with these steps in mind and tell you before you enrol what your return will look like.

In short: Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year. A fee-paying place at a medical university in Moscow is in a similar range.

The author's view
When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021. An academic debt is a word that sounds like guilt. It is one subject, failed twice. The academic certificate lists everything you passed, and that list is what a university abroad reads.
Summary
In Russia two retakes and one year decide over an academic debt, and the law names expulsion as the consequence. Reinstatement depends on places and usually costs fees.
A transfer abroad is possible, and the return runs through recognition, the special examination and accreditation. We plan that route home with you from the first day.
