Failing Medical School in the UK? What to Do After a Failed Resit or Exclusion (2026)

Short answer

Failing medical school in the UK? Failed resit, repeat year used or studies terminated: what happens now and how a transfer abroad brings you back as a doctor.

At a glance

  • Most UK medical schools give you one resit per assessment and one repeat year in the whole programme
  • A failed resit in a repeat year normally ends your studies
  • Since 2024/25 every UK graduate must also pass the Medical Licensing Assessment
  • Other UK medical schools rarely take students who have already been enrolled in Medicine elsewhere
  • Coming back from abroad: GMC registration, with PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 unless your degree is a recognised European qualification
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

The progress committee has met, and the letter says you are required to withdraw. You have a student loan, three years of work behind you and a transcript that no other UK medical school wants to look at.

Below you find how progression rules work, what an appeal can and cannot do, and how a transfer to a medical school abroad brings you back to the UK as a registered doctor.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Resits and repeat years

In short: UK medical schools set their own progression rules. The common pattern is one resit per assessment and one repeat year across the whole programme. If you fail a resit and have no repeat year left, or fail again in the repeat year, the progress committee terminates your studies.

Since the 2024/25 academic year the Medical Licensing Assessment is part of every UK medical degree. It has two parts, the applied knowledge test and the clinical and professional skills assessment, and without it there is no degree and no GMC registration.

Appeals

In short: You can appeal on procedural error or on mitigating circumstances you could not reasonably have raised earlier, not against academic judgement. The deadline is short, often ten working days. When the university's process is finished you receive a Completion of Procedures letter, and in England and Wales you can then complain to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator within twelve months.

Two things follow you. Student finance covers the length of your course plus one extra year, minus any earlier study, so a second start in the UK is often unfunded. And exclusions on fitness to practise grounds are recorded in a database shared between UK medical schools. An academic failure is not a fitness to practise finding, and that difference matters for everything that comes next.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in the UK who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, money and paid work, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference such as dyslexia or ADHD.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

  • You have failed a resit and are in your repeat year.
  • You have been referred to the progress committee.
  • Your appeal has been refused.
  • Your funding ends before your course does.

If one of these applies to you, book a free transfer consultation now. Ask your school for a full transcript and the module descriptors while you are still enrolled.

Transfer abroad

In short: A transfer from a UK medical school to an English-taught medical school abroad is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcript and module descriptors. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Returning to the UK

In short: Yes, you can come back. You register with the General Medical Council with an acceptable primary medical qualification. Holders of a recognised European qualification on the GMC's list are registered without the PLAB test. Everyone else passes PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, which are set at the same standard as the assessment UK graduates take.

  • Without an internship abroad: you apply for provisional registration and enter the two-year Foundation Programme. Provisional registration must be in place before the programme starts in August.
  • With a completed 12-month internship: you may be eligible for full registration and apply to stand-alone posts instead.
  • PLAB costs: about €330 for Part 1 and about €1,200 for Part 2, which is held in Manchester.
  • Training places: UK graduates now have priority for specialty training. Completing the Foundation Programme in the UK puts you in the priority group for the next stage.

We choose your university with these points in mind and tell you before you enrol which registration route applies to its degree.

Costs

In short: A UK medical degree costs about €11,000 a year in tuition for home students. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year.

How we help

Medschool Experts reviews your transcript in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and plans your route back to the UK. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021. British students who write to us usually failed one assessment twice and lost everything else with it. That is a rule of one school. Keep the difference between academic failure and fitness to practise clear in every document you send, because it decides how the next university and later the GMC read your file.

Summary

In the UK one resit and one repeat year are usually all you get, and an appeal cannot overturn academic judgement. A second start at another UK medical school is rare and often unfunded.

A transfer to a medical school abroad is possible, and the GMC registers graduates from abroad, with PLAB where it applies. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

Ask for your transcript while you are still enrolled, and book your free transfer consultation before you decide anything else.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at 25+ partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. He is a federally recognised dentist.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad independent of your high school diploma grades: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
