Studying Medicine in Plovdiv: Costs, Structure and Recognition (2026)
20.10.2026
Short answer
Study medicine in Plovdiv in English: 10,000 € tuition a year, about 650 € monthly living costs in 2026, six years and automatic EU recognition of the degree.
Why study medicine in Plovdiv in 2026?
Studying medicine in Plovdiv in 2026 means a six-year English-taught degree at the Medical University of Plovdiv, a state university in Bulgaria's second-largest city, for 10,000 euros tuition a year. The diploma is an EU medical degree, recognised automatically in all 27 member states, and living costs in Plovdiv stay below those of Sofia.
The university is one of the established medical schools of Bulgaria, alongside Sofia, Varna and Pleven. Its teaching hospital, St. George University Hospital, is one of the largest hospitals in the country, so clinical teaching happens on the same wards that serve the region. For international students the main draw is simple. The degree is European, the language of instruction is English, and placement is independent of your high-school diploma grades.
Plovdiv also has a practical advantage. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026, so tuition, rent and groceries are now all paid in the same currency. No more exchange rate in the budget.
Which programmes does the Medical University of Plovdiv teach in English?
The Medical University of Plovdiv teaches human medicine and dental medicine in English in 2026. Both lead to a master's degree that is equivalent to the Bulgarian-taught degree: same curriculum, same state examinations, same diploma. Medicine takes six years including a clinical internship, dental medicine takes five and a half years with a practical final phase.
Classes for international students run in groups, and practical work in anatomy, histology and later on the wards happens in small sets of students per assistant. Exams in Bulgaria are often oral. That surprises many students in the first semester, and after a year most of them prefer it, because an oral exam rewards understanding rather than memorised answer keys.
Pharmacy also exists at the Medical University of Plovdiv. Which programme and start date fits you depends on your profile, and we look at that together in a free consultation.
How much does it cost to study medicine in Plovdiv?
Tuition for English-taught medicine at the Medical University of Plovdiv is 10,000 euros per year in 2026, which makes 60,000 euros for the six-year degree. With living costs of about 650 euros a month and four flights home a year, the full degree costs around 110,000 euros. Payment runs per year or per semester, never as a lump sum.
Plovdiv sits at the same tuition level as Sofia and Varna. Pleven is 1,000 euros a year cheaper, Burgas also charges 10,000 euros. The difference between Plovdiv and Sofia therefore lies in the living costs, not in the tuition.
Worked example, six years of medicine in Plovdiv (2026 prices): tuition 6 x 10,000 euros = 60,000 euros. Living costs 72 months x 650 euros = 46,800 euros. Flights 4 return trips a year x 150 euros x 6 years = 3,600 euros. Total: 110,400 euros, or about 18,400 euros a year. Add a reserve of around 2,000 euros for books, a laptop and the first deposit on a flat.
A sober note on the limits: 110,000 euros is real money, and most families finance it from savings, income and a loan rather than from one source. The number becomes manageable because it is spread over twelve semesters.
What is a realistic monthly budget in Plovdiv in 2026?
A realistic monthly budget for a medical student in Plovdiv in 2026 is around 650 euros, rent included. A one-bedroom flat near the university and the old town costs roughly 300 euros a month, a room in a shared flat less. Food, utilities and phone add another 260 euros, and city buses cost very little.
| Item (2026, per month) | Plovdiv | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, one-bedroom flat | 300 € | Shared flat cheaper |
| Utilities and internet | 60 € | Higher in winter |
| Groceries and canteen | 170 € | Markets are cheap |
| City transport | 15 € | Many walk or cycle |
| Phone | 15 € | Local prepaid plan |
| Books and materials | 20 € | Higher in year 1 |
| Leisure | 70 € | Cafés, Kapana district |
| Total | 650 € | Planning value 2026 |
Compared with Sofia, rent in Plovdiv is noticeably lower, while groceries cost about the same. Students who share a flat can stay under 550 euros. Students who want a new building with air conditioning near the main campus should plan closer to 750 euros.
How is the six-year medicine programme in Plovdiv structured?
The six-year medicine programme at the Medical University of Plovdiv follows the Bulgarian national curriculum in 2026: two preclinical years with anatomy, biology, chemistry, physiology and biochemistry, a third year bridging to pathology and pharmacology, three clinical years on the hospital wards, and a final internship year that ends with state examinations.
| Year (2026/2027) | Main subjects | Where you learn |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anatomy, histology, biology, chemistry, physics, Bulgarian | Lecture halls, dissection room |
| 2 | Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, Bulgarian | Labs, seminars |
| 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, propaedeutics, Bulgarian | First patient contact |
| 4 | Internal medicine, surgery, neurology, imaging | University hospital wards |
| 5 | Paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, infectious diseases | Clinics in Plovdiv |
| 6 | Clinical internship and state examinations | Rotations in hospital departments |
Anatomy in the first two years is the subject that sets the rhythm. It is long, oral and visual, and the dissection room is where most students decide how they want to study for the next six years. The third year is the turning point. You start examining patients, which is also where Bulgarian becomes practical rather than theoretical.
Do you have to learn Bulgarian to study medicine in Plovdiv?
Yes. The English-taught medicine programme in Plovdiv includes Bulgarian as a compulsory language subject during the first years of study in 2026. Lectures and exams stay in English, but from the clinical years onwards patients on the wards speak Bulgarian, so the language course prepares you to take a history and talk to people in the hospital.
Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet. That looks harder than it is: most students read Cyrillic within a few weeks. Speaking with an older patient in a village dialect takes longer, and that is a fair limitation to name. It costs time every week in the first three years. In my own years in Sofia, the students who took the language seriously had a visibly easier time on the wards in years four to six.
{{cta}}Is a medical degree from Plovdiv recognised in the EU?
Yes. A medical degree from the Medical University of Plovdiv is recognised automatically in all 27 EU member states, plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, under Directive 2005/36/EC. Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007, and the Plovdiv diploma is listed as a Bulgarian basic medical qualification under that directive.
In practice this means a graduate applies for the licence in the country where they want to work, submits the diploma with the certificate of conformity issued in Bulgaria, and shows language skills in the national language of that country. There is no additional medical exam for EU-trained doctors. I went through the Swiss recognition myself after Sofia, and the route from Plovdiv is the same.
Outside Europe, graduates take the licensing route of the destination country, for example the USMLE for the United States, PLAB for the United Kingdom or the licensing examinations of the Gulf health authorities. The Plovdiv degree is the basis for all of them.
What is Plovdiv like as a student city?
Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second-largest city with around 350,000 inhabitants in 2026, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. It was European Capital of Culture in 2019. For students that means a compact centre, a walkable old town on three hills, and a Roman theatre that still hosts concerts in summer.
The Roman stadium of Philippopolis lies under the main pedestrian street, partly open to view. Next to it is Kapana, the former craftsmen quarter, now full of cafés, small bars and galleries. Students meet there after exams. The Maritsa river runs along the north of the centre, with a long path for running and cycling.
The climate is continental. Summers are hot, often above 30 degrees, winters are short and colder than on the Black Sea coast. Sofia Airport is about two hours away, and Plovdiv has its own airport with a smaller choice of flights. Many students fly from Sofia.
About 350,000 residents. Euro since 1 January 2026. Around 150 km to Sofia.
Old town, Kapana, Maritsa river path. Most distances on foot.
International perspective: how this works in other countries
The model of Plovdiv, a six-year medical degree taught in English to an international class, exists in several European countries, and each has its own logic. In Romania, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest and the universities of Cluj and Iași teach medicine in English for six years, with Romanian as the language subject. Tuition there ranges roughly between 6,000 and 11,000 euros a year in 2026.
In Hungary, Semmelweis University in Budapest and the universities of Pécs, Szeged and Debrecen have run English programmes for decades. Tuition there is clearly higher than in Plovdiv, often above 16,000 euros a year, and Hungarian is the language subject. In Czechia, faculties such as Masaryk University in Brno teach in English with Czech as the clinical language, at tuition levels above Bulgaria.
Outside Europe the logic is different. In the United States, medicine is a four-year graduate degree after a bachelor's, so a doctor qualifies after eight years at university and at a much higher cost. In Italy, students sit the national Medicine admission procedure and the six-year degree is taught mainly in Italian. Seen against these systems, Plovdiv combines three things that rarely come together: EU recognition, English teaching and a tuition level of 10,000 euros a year.

The author's view
I chose Sofia in 2015 and graduated there in 2021. Since then I have placed students in Plovdiv as well, and the question I hear most often is the same one I asked myself at 24: where will I study best for six years?
For students who like a compact city and a lower rent, Plovdiv is the better answer. For students who need a big airport and a big city, it is Sofia. The tuition is the same, 10,000 euros a year in 2026, and the diploma has the same value across the European Union.
My assessment: the difference between the two lies in daily life, not in the degree. That is a personal view from six years in Bulgaria and from our placement work, not a ranking.

- The Medical University of Plovdiv teaches medicine and dentistry in English; medicine takes six years.
- Tuition is 10,000 euros a year in 2026, the same level as Sofia and Varna.
