What does a UK-awarded MBBS from Malta mean for recognition in Malta, the United Kingdom and the EU?

The degree awarded at the Malta Campus is a United Kingdom qualification from Queen Mary University of London, validated by the UK General Medical Council. Queen Mary states that the UK Foundation Programme treats all its MBBS graduates equally, whether they were based in London or in Malta. From 2025 onwards, UK medical students must pass the Medical Licensing Assessment before joining the medical register.

In Malta itself, graduates can apply for Foundation School posts, and the Malta Medical Council requires fluency in medical Maltese, which Queen Mary supports through its own Medical Maltese course. This is a real planning point: the clinical years in Malta run in English, while practising in Malta afterwards brings a language requirement with it.

For the rest of the European Union the situation is different from that of a degree awarded by an EU university. Since the United Kingdom left the European Union, a UK medical qualification is assessed by each member state under its own rules for third-country qualifications rather than through the automatic recognition that applies to EU-awarded degrees under Directive 2005/36/EC.
