European University Cyprus is a private university in Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus. It grew out of Cyprus College, established in 1961, and was granted university status by the Republic of Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture in 2007. Its School of Medicine was established in 2013 and teaches one undergraduate degree: the Doctor of Medicine, six academic years, 360 ECTS, in English, on the Nicosia campus.

The programme appears on the accredited-programmes list of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education as Doctor of Medicine, six academic years, 360 ECTS, English, with accreditation running through the spring semester of 2030. European University Cyprus also runs a branch campus in Frankfurt, Germany, where the same six-year MD is taught in English and the degree is awarded by European University Cyprus.

Can you transfer from European University Cyprus to another medical university?

Which year can you enter after leaving European University Cyprus?

What does a Cyprus medical degree mean for recognition, and what changes if you transfer?

Cyprus is a member state of the European Union, so a medical degree from European University Cyprus is awarded under EU standards and falls within the scope of EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications. The MD programme is accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, and that agency holds Recognition Status from the World Federation for Medical Education, granted in 2020.

If you transfer to another EU university, for example the Medical University of Varna in Bulgaria, you stay inside the same Directive. If you transfer outside the EU — Bosnia and Herzegovina or Serbia, say — recognition runs through the national authority of the country where you later want to work, and that is a step we plan with you from the beginning. Graduates should always confirm registration requirements with the competent authority in their target country.

What about a career in the United States or in Germany?

Both are common goals among students who contact us from Nicosia, and both have a clear route. For the United States, Mostar School of Medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only European university that specifically prepares for the USMLE, Step 1 for the preclinical part and Step 2 CK for the clinical part. It teaches in small groups, with a better teacher-to-student ratio than other European medical schools, and has only 30 places per year.
