"Ion Ionescu de la Brad" Iași University of Life Sciences (IULS) in Iași, Romania, is a specialist life sciences university whose higher-education roots go back to 1912. Its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1961 and teaches veterinary medicine in English across 360 ECTS, awarding a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine diploma.

The English-taught programme runs over six years, which is the minimum length the European Union sets for the profession. Tuition is €5,950 per year in 2026 according to the faculty’s own admission page. Teaching starts in October. Why do students transfer from IULS Iași?

Students leave a perfectly good faculty for reasons that have little to do with the teaching. In our experience five motives cover almost every veterinary case: total cost, examination fit, personal or organisational circumstances, a planned career in the United States, and a planned career in Germany or another EU country. None of these is a verdict on Iași.

• Total budget. At €5,950 per year plus living costs, Iași is mid-range. Some families need a lower number, and two faculties in our veterinary network sit clearly below it.
• Examination fit. Some students hit a wall at one or two specific subjects. A faculty with a different examination rhythm can be the difference between finishing and stalling. This is the part of our work we know best.
• Personal and organisational reasons. A difficult situation with an individual professor, a family matter at home, a partner in another country. Life gets in the way of a six-year plan.
• A career in the United States. Graduates of veterinary schools that the American Veterinary Medical Association does not accredit reach US licensure through an equivalence certificate, either the ECFVG programme run by the AVMA or the PAVE programme run by the AAVSB, followed by the national licensing examination and a state licence. Faculties differ in how well they line up with that route.
• A career in Germany, Austria or elsewhere in the EU. Veterinary surgeon is one of the professions with automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC. Some students still prefer a faculty whose ESEVT accreditation status is settled, because employers and regulators occasionally ask about it.

Where can IULS Iași veterinary students transfer to?

Destinations for a veterinary student from Iași are always other veterinary faculties, and the right one follows from the goal. How much can an IULS Iași student save by transferring?

A worked example. Tuition at Iași University of Life Sciences is €5,950 per year in 2026. Tuition at the University of Belgrade veterinary faculty in Serbia is around €2,500 per year by our own 2026 figures. The difference is €3,450 for every remaining year of the programme.

Say you transfer after three completed years and have three left. On tuition alone that is roughly €10,350 saved. Add living costs of about €500 per month in both cities and the total year falls from roughly €11,950 to roughly €8,500. Numbers move, so treat these as planning figures rather than quotes.

Which study year can you enter after leaving IULS Iași?

There is no fixed ceiling. What does the EAEVE list say about IULS Iași, and what does that mean for your plans?

The European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education publishes a status list for its evaluation system, ESEVT. In the list updated after the ECOVE meeting of 27 May 2026, Iași appears as a candidate member with the status Non-Approval, dated 2012. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara appear with Accreditation.

Read that calmly, because it is narrower than it sounds. Romania is an EU member state, veterinary surgeon is a profession with automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC, and a Romanian veterinary diploma is recognised across the Union without an aptitude test or a separate equivalence procedure. Registration to practise still follows the rules of the country you move to.

Where the ESEVT status can matter is narrower still: some employers ask, some postgraduate routes ask, and students aiming at the United States often prefer a faculty with settled accreditation before starting the ECFVG or PAVE process. If that is your plan, say so in the first conversation. If your plan is a practice in Europe, this line in a list changes very little for you.

When should IULS Iași students start planning a transfer?

Earlier than most people do. The practical window is the weeks after an examination session, when your transcript reflects what you have actually completed and the next academic year has not yet started. Most receiving faculties take transfer students for an October start, so spring and early summer are the calm months for this.

That said, a conversation costs nothing at any point in the year. Students come to us in their second year and in their fifth. The only version we would gently discourage is the panic transfer in late September, because a rushed record review tends to land you a lower entry year than your work deserves.
