Transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu: Where to Continue Medicine in 2026
21.10.2026
Short answer
Failed exams or dismissed at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu? Resit rules, credit thresholds and how to transfer and continue Medicine in 2026.
Is a transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu possible in 2026?
Yes. Students of the English-taught Medicine programme at the Faculty of Medicine of Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu can transfer to another university in 2026, whether they are in good standing, behind on credits or facing exmatriculation. Medschool Experts plans and carries out the transfer, and the first consultation is free.
The faculty in Sibiu sits in a state university with a long history, and its English line is one of the smaller ones in Romania: the 2026 admission criteria set a capacity of 60 places in Medicine and 30 in Dental Medicine taught in English. Small cohorts have advantages. They also mean that when something goes wrong, there are fewer people around you who have been through the same thing. That is where we come in.
Quick answer: A transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu is possible in 2026, also after failed exams or a missed credit threshold. Your passed credits stay on your transcript. Medschool Experts checks your record against our European partner universities, plans the move without loss of time where possible, and the consultation is free.

What do the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu exam regulations say about resits and failing a year?
Two documents govern exams and progression in Sibiu: the Regulation on the Evaluation, Examination and Grading of Students and the Regulation on the Professional Activity of Students under the ECTS system, both approved by the ULBS Senate in decision no. 4973 of 25 September 2025. Together they give you two free sittings per exam per year, one paid reexamination, and strict credit thresholds for each year of Medicine.
Start with the sittings. Under the 2025 evaluation regulation, a student may sit the same exam or colloquium free of charge twice per academic year: once in the regular session and once in the one-week resit session that follows each semester. If both go wrong, there is a paid reexamination session in September. You can register for it in a maximum of two disciplines, and only if you sat the exam at least once before. In some years the university also organises an exceptional, equally paid re-reexamination session. So, in practice: two free sittings plus one paid reexamination, three sittings per year as standard, with a possible fourth in exceptional cases.
The pass mark is 5 on the Romanian scale from 1 to 10. Credits for a discipline are only awarded once it is passed in full, and the regulation says credits cannot be collected in stages. A subject at 4.5 is a subject at zero.
Then attendance. The rules allow you to make up absences from practicals and seminars free of charge up to 25 %. Above that line, you have to repeat the whole discipline before you are even allowed to sit the exam. Students often learn this rule in November, when it is already too late for one subject.
Progression is where Sibiu is stricter than many students expect. Article 58 of the professional activity regulation sets cumulative credit thresholds for the Faculty of Medicine: at least 45 credits after year one to enrol in year two, 105 credits to enter year three, 165 for year four, 225 for year five and 285 for year six. Physical education must be passed before you move up. Students who reach the threshold but still carry failed subjects move up as "promoted on credits" and must clear those subjects later, in paid form, by retaking the full discipline.
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Free sittings per exam per year | 2 (regular session + one-week resit session) |
| Paid reexamination | September, maximum 2 disciplines; exceptional re-reexamination possible |
| Total sittings per year | 3 as standard, a 4th only in an exceptional session |
| Pass mark | 5 out of 10 |
| Absences | Above 25 % missed practicals: repeat the discipline before the exam |
| Credits to enter year 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 | 45 / 105 / 165 / 225 / 285 (cumulative) |
| Failed subject after all sittings | Retake the full discipline next year, paid |
| Below the credit threshold | Exmatriculation on the last day of the academic year |
| Appeals | Written exams: within 48 hours; oral results cannot be appealed |
One detail is worth reading twice. There is no classic "repeat year" in the Sibiu rulebook. Fall below the threshold and you are not held back; you are exmatriculated, and the way back runs through a paid re-enrolment. We explain that route in the next section.
What happens if you are dismissed from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
At Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, a medical student who does not collect the minimum number of credits in an academic year is exmatriculated on the last day of that academic year (Article 63 of the 2025 professional activity regulation). Students on paid places who do not sign the study contract or pay by 15 October are also exmatriculated. A transfer remains possible afterwards, because passed credits stay on your record.
The regulation offers one route back inside Sibiu: re-enrolment. It is always fee-paying, possible at the earliest in the academic year after the exmatriculation and at the latest within three consecutive years. The written request has to be filed by 15 September, the study contract is signed at the same time, and you can use this route a maximum of three times for the same programme. Re-enrolled students follow the curriculum of the cohort they join and pay again for every activity they have to redo. After a period equal to the normal length of the programme, re-enrolment is closed and only a new admission remains.
Two more ways to lose your place exist on paper. A student who interrupts studies for a year and does not ask to resume is exmatriculated. And the evaluation regulation allows the faculty council to propose exmatriculation for cheating in an exam. These cases are rare. The credit threshold is the common one.
The calendar in Sibiu makes this concrete. The summer session for the pre-clinical years runs in June, the free resit week follows, and the paid reexamination takes place in the first half of September. By mid-September you know whether you have reached 45, 105 or 165 credits. The re-enrolment request is due by 15 September, the payment for paid places by 15 October, and the exmatriculation for missing credits takes effect at the end of the academic year. That leaves a few weeks in which you have to choose between re-enrolling in Sibiu, paying again for the subjects you failed, or moving to a faculty where the same credits open a higher year. Students who make that decision in panic often choose the most expensive option by default.
What students often miss: exmatriculation does not erase your results. Every passed exam, with grade and ECTS credits, stays on the transcript of records, and that transcript is what a receiving university assesses. The Sibiu rules do not provide a written appeal against oral exam results, so arguing about a single grade rarely changes the outcome. A plan does.
Act before the formal decision. The exmatriculation takes effect on the last day of the academic year. If your September results show you will miss the threshold, request your transcript of records while you are still enrolled. A transfer planned from an active student status is simpler, and it keeps more options open.
Which subjects do students fail most at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
In the English-taught Medicine programme at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, the bottleneck subjects sit in the first two years: Anatomy and Embryology I and II, Biochemistry I and II, Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Biology and Physiology I. In year three the pressure moves to the classic pre-clinical block of pathophysiology, pathology, microbiology and pharmacology.
Anatomy is the subject that decides most first years. The 2025/26 curriculum gives Anatomy and Embryology five credits in each of the first two years, both closed with an exam, and in Romanian faculties these exams usually combine a practical part on specimens with a written or oral theory part. Missing one anatomy exam already costs five of the 45 credits you need for year two.
Biochemistry and Biophysics catch a different group: students who were strong in biology at school but never liked chemistry or physics. Biophysics comes with four credits in year one, Cellular and Molecular Biology with another four. Several subjects together can push you below 45 credits faster than you think.
The exam format adds to the pressure. The evaluation regulation allows written, oral, practical or combined exams, and for oral exams it sets out a fixed procedure: a ticket with at least two topics and a maximum of 15 minutes of preparation. Students who do well in multiple-choice tests often find oral exams harder. Nerves count.
| Year | Subject | Credits / format |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anatomy and Embryology I | 5 ECTS, exam (practical and theory) |
| 1 | Biophysics, Cellular and Molecular Biology | 4 ECTS each, exam |
| 1–2 | Biochemistry I and II | 3 ECTS each, exam |
| 2 | Anatomy and Embryology II, Physiology I | 5 and 3 ECTS, exam |
| 3 | Pathophysiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology | Exams, often oral components |
What do students criticise about Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
Students in English-taught medicine in Sibiu and at comparable Romanian faculties raise four recurring points: Romanian on the wards, oral exams that cannot be appealed, rising fees with strict payment rules, and a small international community. None of these makes the faculty a bad choice. Each can be a reason why a transfer makes sense for a specific student.
Romanian on the wards. A recurring complaint among international students in Romania is the language gap in the clinical years. Teaching is in English, the patients are not. In Sibiu, Romanian appears in the curriculum as one of the optional modern-language packages, yet history taking at the bedside happens in Romanian. Students who do not plan to work in Romania sometimes ask whether this effort fits their goals. A fair question. Our partner universities teach in English with clinical training organised for international students, and we look at this point in every consultation.
Oral exams without appeal. Students frequently report that oral exams feel less predictable than written ones. The Sibiu evaluation regulation confirms the structural side: written results can be appealed within 48 hours, oral results cannot. If you keep failing the same oral exam, the issue may be the format more than the material. A faculty with a different exam culture can change that, and finding it is our job.
Fees and payment rules. Many Romanian state universities raised tuition for 2026/27, Lucian Blaga University included in several programmes. For English-taught Medicine, every year abroad costs real money, and a repeated discipline or a re-enrolment is paid on top. Missing the 15 October payment deadline even leads to exmatriculation. For families on a fixed budget, these rules weigh heavily.
A small English line. With 60 places per year, the international community in Sibiu is small compared with the large Romanian centres. Some students value the closeness. Others miss a larger group of senior students who can tell them how an exam really works.
To be fair: Sibiu has real strengths. It is one of the most beautiful and safe cities in Romania, living costs are moderate, and small groups mean that teachers know your name. Many students finish there and do well.
Failed exams at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu: what now?
If you failed exams at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, first count your credits against the threshold for your year, then use the free resit week and the September reexamination wisely. If the threshold is out of reach, a transfer to one of our European partner universities is a realistic way to continue Medicine without starting from zero.
A short checklist we use with students in this situation:
- Add up the credits you already hold and compare them with 45, 105, 165, 225 or 285 for your year.
- Check which failed subjects you can still sit: two free sittings per year, then a paid reexamination for a maximum of two disciplines.
- Check your attendance in each subject. Above 25 % missed practicals, the exam is not open to you yet.
- Request your transcript of records and the syllabi of the passed subjects while you are enrolled.
- Talk to us before September, not after.
The timing matters. If you wait for the reexamination and fail, the exmatriculation follows at the end of the academic year, and the window for a smooth transfer into the next winter semester gets narrow. Students who contact us after the summer session usually have more options than those who call in October. A failed exam is not the end of a medical career. Doing nothing for three months can be.
Why do students consider a transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
Students consider leaving Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu for five main reasons: a credit threshold they will not reach, an exam format that does not suit them, total costs, the Romanian language in the clinical years, and career plans in the USA, the UK or the Gulf. Most combine two of these.
A typical case looks like this. A second-year student passed most of year one, then failed Anatomy II and Biochemistry II twice. With two subjects in reexamination, the 105-credit line for year three is suddenly at risk. Another student is fine on credits but realises that the family budget will not cover four more years at around €6,000 tuition plus rent. A third wants to sit the USMLE and needs a faculty that prepares for it from year one.
Each situation has a different solution. A study transfer is a complex undertaking. Our experts have almost 10 years of experience in study transfers worldwide, which is why they plan and carry them out confidently. The consultation is free.
How are credits from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu recognised (ECTS)?
Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu awards credits under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, 60 ECTS per academic year and 360 for the six-year programme. When you transfer, the receiving faculty compares each passed subject with its own curriculum by content, hours and credits, and recognises what matches. Passed exams stay valid; failed ones do not carry over.
The Sibiu regulation itself recognises exams passed in earlier years even if the credit value of a discipline later changes, and it allows credits from other institutions to be equated on request based on the syllabus. Receiving universities apply the same logic in reverse. That is why the syllabus of each subject, with hours and topics, matters as much as the grade.
A short international comparison helps to understand why EU credits travel well. Inside the European Union, ECTS makes study periods comparable, and medical training is coordinated by Directive 2005/36/EC, which sets a minimum of six years or 5,500 hours of theoretical and practical training. Recognition of individual subjects between EU faculties is therefore a matter of matching content, not of converting systems. In the United Kingdom, medical schools rarely accept transfers into later years; most UK programmes have no formal route for transfer students, and credits are judged by the school individually rather than through a shared credit system. In the USA, medicine is a graduate-entry degree after a bachelor's, and US medical schools almost never accept transfers from abroad; the realistic path for European students is to finish their degree and take the USMLE. In short, the EU system is the most open to students who want to move mid-degree, and a Sibiu transcript fits straight into it.
The rule of thumb for eligibility: usually no more than two exams may be open, and their credits must stay below a maximum. Every case is checked individually, and faculties often place transfer students into high years.
Which universities accept transfer students from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
Several European universities accept transfer students from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, including students with open exams or after exmatriculation. Medschool Experts has 25+ partner universities in Europe specifically for this situation, with English-taught Medicine and Dentistry and curricula that match the Romanian structure well.
We do not publish a list of names here, and there is a reason. Which faculty fits depends on your year, your passed subjects, your open exams and your plans after graduation. A faculty that is ideal for a third-year student with one open exam may be the wrong place for a first-year student who failed anatomy. The match is made from your transcript, not from a ranking.
What we can say: our partners know transfer students, they often place them into high years, and they teach in English. The rest is a conversation.
What does studying at our European partner universities cost compared with Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
English-taught Medicine at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu costs approx. €6,000 per year, or around €3,000 per semester. At our European partner universities, English-taught studies start from €1,750 tuition per semester for Medicine and Dentistry, from €1,500 for Pharmacy and from €3,000 for Veterinary Medicine. We help with the application without loss of time and rescue the career.
| Item | Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu | Our partner universities |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition per semester (Medicine) | approx. €3,000 | from €1,750 |
| Tuition per year (Medicine) | approx. €6,000 | from €3,500 |
| Repeated discipline or re-enrolment | paid on top | placement planned to avoid a lost year |
| Language of teaching | English | English |
Over three remaining years, the difference in tuition alone can reach around €7,500. Add a repeated discipline or a re-enrolment, and the gap grows. Money is not the only reason to move. For many families, it is the reason the degree gets finished.
Can I transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu without losing a year?
Often yes. Students from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu with no more than two open exams usually enter the same or the next year at a partner university, and faculties often place transfer students into high years. Whether you lose time depends on your credits, the timing of your application and the curriculum match.
Three things help. First, timing: a transfer planned for the winter semester has to start in spring or early summer. Second, documents: an official transcript and syllabi in English speed up the recognition. Third, a clear view of your open exams. Students who list every failed attempt upfront get a placement that holds; those who hope a problem disappears get surprises.
In Sibiu, the credit thresholds make the calculation sharper. A student with 100 credits after year two cannot enter year three in Sibiu, but may well enter year three elsewhere if the missing subjects can be cleared there. We check exactly this.

Book a Free Transfer ConsultationCan I continue towards the USMLE, the UK or the Gulf after Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
Yes. A transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu does not close the door to the USA, the UK or the Gulf. Some of our partner universities have very strong USMLE preparation, with pass rates of up to 100 % in the last two years, and an EU medical degree is the usual starting point for registration in the UK and the Gulf states.
For the USA, the decisive steps are USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK and a medical school listed in the international directory of medical schools. Students who know early that they want this route benefit from a faculty that builds the preparation into the timetable instead of leaving it to evenings and weekends.
For the UK, graduates of EU medical schools apply to the General Medical Council for registration; the exact requirements depend on the qualification and the date it was awarded. For the Gulf states, health authorities in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia license foreign graduates through their own exams and experience requirements. In all three cases, the earlier you plan, the less time you lose after graduation.
How does a transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu work with Medschool Experts, step by step?
A transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu with Medschool Experts runs in six steps and usually takes four to seven months, from the free consultation to your first day at the new university. You stay enrolled in Sibiu until the new place is confirmed, unless an exmatriculation has already taken effect.
- Free consultation. We talk about your situation, your credits and your goals.
- Record check. You send your transcript of records; we compare it with the curricula of our partner universities.
- Placement proposal. We suggest a university and a realistic year of entry.
- Documents. We tell you which documents and translations are needed and help to prepare them.
- Application and recognition. We submit the application and follow the credit recognition with the faculty.
- Start. You receive the confirmation, organise housing with our help and begin the semester.
The most common mistake is to start at step five. Students write to a faculty directly, receive a polite answer and lose two months. Starting with the record check saves that time. Book the free consultation on our contact page.
The author's view
When I started dentistry in Sofia in 2015, I was 24 and older than most people in my year. I remember the first anatomy exams very well, standing in front of a table of specimens, knowing the material at home and losing half of it the moment the examiner looked up. Oral exams are a skill of their own. Nobody tells you that in the brochure.
That is why the Sibiu rules caught my attention when we went through them for this guide. The faculty is small, the city is lovely, and the regulations are clear. But they are also strict: two free sittings, one paid reexamination, fixed credit lines and exmatriculation instead of a repeated year. A student who has one bad year in Sibiu can lose the place far faster than at many other faculties. I do not think that says anything about the quality of the student.
What I tell students from Sibiu is simple. Count your credits in July, not in October. Ask for your transcript while you are still enrolled. And talk to someone who has seen these cases before you decide on a paid re-enrolment. More often than not, there is a faster way to keep going with Medicine.
Summary
- A transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu is possible in 2026, also after failed exams or exmatriculation, and Medschool Experts organises it from start to finish.
- The 2025 evaluation regulation of Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu allows two free sittings per exam per year plus one paid September reexamination for a maximum of two disciplines.
- Medicine students at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu need cumulative credit thresholds of 45, 105, 165, 225 and 285 to enter years two to six.
- Missing the threshold at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu leads to exmatriculation on the last day of the academic year; the only way back there is a paid re-enrolment.
- Passed exams from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu stay on the transcript and are recognised by ECTS at our European partner universities.
- English-taught Medicine at our partner universities starts from €1,750 per semester, compared with approx. €3,000 per semester at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu.
Conclusion
Sibiu is a good place to study, and many students finish there. For others, the credit thresholds, the oral exams or the costs turn a difficult semester into a real risk for the whole degree. That risk can be managed. Your passed credits are worth something, and the right partner university turns them into a year of entry instead of a lost year.

Frequently Asked Questions about a transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu
Do I need an agency to transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
You do not have to use one, but it saves time and mistakes. Medschool Experts compares your Sibiu transcript with several partner curricula at once, knows which faculties accept transfer students into high years and handles the application. Students who write to universities on their own often wait weeks for a general answer.
Will I lose a year if I transfer from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
Often not. With no more than two open exams, students usually enter the same or the next year at a partner university. The result depends on your credits, the curriculum match and the timing. We check this before you decide anything.
I failed a year or was exmatriculated in Sibiu. Can I still transfer?
Yes. Exmatriculation at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu does not delete your passed exams. They remain on your transcript of records with grades and ECTS credits, and that is what a receiving university assesses. The sooner you act, the more options remain open.
How many credits or ECTS do I need for a transfer from Sibiu?
There is no single number. As a rule of thumb, usually no more than two exams may be open and their credits must stay below a maximum. Each year in Sibiu carries 60 ECTS, and the receiving faculty recognises passed subjects by content and hours.
Which documents do I need from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
Mainly your transcript of records and the syllabi of the subjects you passed, ideally in English and officially issued by the faculty. Request them while you are still enrolled. We tell you exactly which additional documents your target faculty needs.
What does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost?
Nothing. The first consultation is free and without obligation. We look at your situation, your credits and your goals, and tell you openly what is realistic.
How many resits does Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu allow?
Under the evaluation regulation approved by the ULBS Senate in September 2025, you have two free sittings per exam per year, in the regular session and the resit week. A paid reexamination in September is possible for a maximum of two disciplines, and an exceptional re-reexamination session may be held. After that, the discipline has to be retaken in full the next year.
Can I prepare for the USMLE after transferring from Sibiu?
Yes. Some of our partner universities offer very strong USMLE preparation, with pass rates of up to 100 % in the last two years. If the USA is your goal, tell us in the consultation so we can include it in the placement.
How do the costs compare with Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu?
English-taught Medicine in Sibiu costs approx. €6,000 per year. At our European partner universities, English-taught Medicine and Dentistry start from €1,750 tuition per semester, Pharmacy from €1,500 and Veterinary Medicine from €3,000.
When should I start planning a transfer from Sibiu?
As soon as you see that the credit threshold for your year is at risk, ideally after the summer session and before the September reexamination. A transfer usually takes four to seven months, so spring or early summer is ideal for a start in the winter semester.
Can dental students from Sibiu transfer too?
Yes. Dental Medicine in English at Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu follows the same regulations, and our partner universities also offer English-taught Dentistry. The match is checked against a dentistry curriculum.
