Transfer from Trinity College Dublin Medicine: Failed Exams, Fees and Your Options in 2026

Short answer

Transfer from Trinity College Dublin Medicine: non-EU fees up to about €60,000 a year, failed exams, ECTS credits and switching without losing a year.

Trinity College Dublin teaches medicine in the centre of the Irish capital, with clinical training at St James's Hospital and other Dublin hospitals. Its five-year MB BCh BAO is highly competitive, and non-EU students pay fees banded by year of study, rising to about €60,000 per year in 2026/27. Some of them later ask how to transfer from Trinity Medicine to another medical school.

The triggers are familiar: a failed repeat examination, a repeat year at clinical-year fees, Dublin rents, or an Irish residence permission that depends on staying on course.

This guide explains the transfer from Trinity College Dublin: failed exams, costs, how your ECTS credits carry over, what happens to your Irish immigration permission and how to switch without losing a year.

Last reviewed: September 2026.

Is a transfer from Trinity College Dublin Medicine possible?

Quick answer: Yes. Medicine students at Trinity College Dublin can transfer to English-taught medical faculties elsewhere in Europe. Ireland uses ECTS, so a full year of 60 ECTS carries over without conversion. The receiving faculty compares your transcript and module descriptions with its curriculum and decides the entry year. With early planning, many students keep their study time.

Your passed modules at Trinity stay on your record, and because they are already in ECTS, they travel easily to another European faculty.

Why do non-EU students leave Trinity Medicine?

Cost is the first reason. Trinity's non-EU medicine fee rises with each year of study, so the clinical years are the most expensive. Five years can approach €300,000 in tuition, before Dublin rents.

Progression is the second. A failed repeat examination can lead to a repeat year, and a repeated clinical year is charged at the highest band.

The third is fit: the city, the pace or the distance from home. None of this is a verdict on Trinity.

Failed exams at Trinity — what are your options?

A failed exam at Trinity College Dublin does not end your medical career. Supplemental examinations are part of the system.

The turning point is a failed supplemental or a proposed repeat year. At clinical-year fees, repeating is costly. A transfer lets your passed modules count at a new faculty, so you continue instead of starting a year again.

Act early.

How much does Trinity Medicine cost compared with other options?

Non-EU tuition for medicine at Trinity College Dublin is banded by year of study and reaches about €60,000 per year in 2026/27. Using that upper band as a planning figure, five years of tuition come to about €300,000. With about €1,600 per month for living costs in Dublin, the five-year total is around €396,000.

At our European partner universities, English-taught Medicine starts from €1,750 tuition per semester, so from €3,500 per year. Even over six years, that is from about €21,000.

Can you transfer from Trinity without losing a year?

Often, yes. It depends on your passed modules, how well they match the receiving curriculum and when you apply. Planning in spring leaves more room than waiting for autumn supplementals.

Medschool Experts regularly achieves high placements for transfer students. The receiving faculty decides the entry year, so we never promise a year in advance.

How do Trinity credits carry over?

Trinity uses ECTS. A full year carries 60 ECTS, the same unit used by medical faculties across Europe, so there is nothing to convert.

The content match is what counts. Trinity combines a strong basic-science foundation with clinical modules taught through its Dublin hospitals. Module descriptions with learning outcomes and contact hours show the receiving faculty exactly what you have covered. We prepare this with you.

What happens to your Irish residence permission when you leave Trinity?

Non-EU students in Ireland usually hold Stamp 2 student permission, registered through an Irish Residence Permit and tied to full-time study. When you withdraw, the permission no longer covers you. For a faculty in another EU country you apply for that country's residence permit. We plan the timing so the change runs smoothly.

Which documents does a transfer from Trinity need?

You will need an official transcript from Trinity College Dublin, the module descriptions of what you have passed and confirmation of your enrolment status. Apostille and translation rules depend on the destination country. We give you the exact list once your options are clear.

How long does a transfer from Trinity Medicine take?

Allow three to six months from the first consultation to your start at the new faculty.

Is your degree recognised after a transfer from Trinity?

Yes. Ireland is an EU member state, and when you graduate from another EU medical faculty, your degree is recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC, exactly as an Irish degree would be.

Why transfer from Trinity with Medschool Experts?

A study transfer is a complex undertaking. Our experts have almost 10 years of experience in study transfers worldwide, which is why they plan and carry it out confidently. The consultation is free. Leaving Ireland as a non-EU student adds residence questions, and we plan those too. Read more on our services page or in our student stories.

The author's view

Trinity is a name that carries weight far beyond Ireland, and a place in its medical school is a real achievement. That is exactly why I never treat a transfer request from Trinity as a failure.

What I see is usually a very capable student facing a hard calculation: clinical-year fees near €60,000, Dublin rents and sometimes a failed supplemental. Continuing at another EU faculty keeps the credits and keeps the EU recognition. It simply costs far less.

I began my own studies in Sofia in 2015 at 24. Since founding Medschool Experts, my team and I have placed more than 500 students. Talk to us while all your options are open.

  • Stamp 2 permission ends with full-time study, so timing matters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer from Trinity College Dublin Medicine to another medical school?

Yes. Medicine students at Trinity College Dublin can transfer to English-taught medical faculties elsewhere in Europe. The receiving faculty reviews the transcript and module descriptions and sets the entry year. Medschool Experts organises the process, and the first consultation is free.

Do I lose a year if I transfer from Trinity?

Not necessarily. Many students transfer from Trinity College Dublin without losing study time. It depends on your passed modules, the curriculum match and the timing of your application.

I failed a supplemental exam at Trinity. Can I still transfer?

Yes. A failed supplemental or a proposed repeat year does not rule out a transfer. Your passed modules keep their value and can count at a new faculty instead of paying another year of non-EU fees.

Do Trinity credits need to be converted?

No. Trinity uses ECTS, so a full year of 60 ECTS carries over directly. The receiving faculty then compares module content with its own curriculum.

Why do Trinity medicine fees differ by year?

Trinity bands its non-EU medicine fee by year of study, with the clinical years at the top of the range, around €60,000 per year in 2026/27. A repeated clinical year is therefore especially expensive.

What happens to my Stamp 2 permission if I leave Trinity?

Stamp 2 student permission is tied to full-time study in Ireland. When you withdraw, it no longer covers you. For a faculty in another EU country you apply for that country's residence permit.

Do I need an agency to transfer from Trinity?

It is not required, but a transfer combines credit matching, documents and residence timing. Medschool Experts has close to ten years of experience in study transfers worldwide and advises you free of charge.

Which universities accept transfer students from Trinity?

Several English-taught medical faculties in Europe accept transfer students from Trinity College Dublin. Which fit depends on your transcript and plans, and we tell you in a free consultation which are realistic.

Is my degree still recognised in the EU after transferring?

Yes. A degree from an EU medical faculty is recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC.

Is the first consultation with Medschool Experts free?

Yes. The first consultation about a transfer from Trinity Medicine is free. We look at your transcript and residence situation, and you decide afterwards whether you want our support.

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He is a federally recognised dentist.
