Short answer

Transfer from UniCamillus Rome: €21,000 tuition a year, failed exams, CFU to ECTS credit transfer and switching medical school without losing a year.

UniCamillus, the Saint Camillus International University of Health Sciences, was founded in Rome in 2017 and has grown quickly into one of the private options for studying Medicine and Surgery in English in Italy. Its students come from dozens of countries, and a good share of them eventually ask whether they can move to another medical school and take their credits with them.

The question usually comes up after a difficult exam session, after a closer look at the annual tuition of €21,000 for the English-taught programme, or when the clinical years get closer and the student wants a different hospital environment.

This guide covers the transfer from UniCamillus Rome step by step: why students leave, what failed exams mean for you, how CFU credits convert, what the move costs in time and why it rarely has to cost a full year.

Last reviewed: September 2026.

Is a transfer from UniCamillus Rome possible?

Quick answer: Yes. Students of Medicine and Surgery at UniCamillus Rome can transfer to other medical faculties in Europe. Their CFU credits count one to one as ECTS. The receiving faculty compares transcript and syllabi with its own curriculum and decides the entry year. With early planning, many students switch without losing study time.

The good news is that nothing you have passed is lost. A transfer builds on your transcript. The task is to show the receiving faculty, module by module, what you have already completed at UniCamillus.

Why do students leave UniCamillus Rome?

Three reasons dominate the conversations we have with UniCamillus students. Tuition is the first. At €21,000 a year for the English-taught programme, six years of tuition alone reach €126,000, before rent in Rome.

The second is exam progression. Private universities in Italy follow the same national rules on exam prerequisites as public ones, and a single failed module can hold up the next semester.

The third is the clinical phase. Patients in Rome speak Italian, and not every international student wants to learn clinical medicine in a second foreign language. These are practical questions of fit, not judgements about the school.

Failed an exam at UniCamillus — what are your options?

A failed exam at UniCamillus Rome is not unusual and it does not decide your future. Many students who later become good doctors failed something along the way.

The risk lies in repetition. If you retake the same exam again and again, your study time stretches and every extra year costs another €21,000. A transfer lets you continue at a faculty where your passed exams count and where a different teaching and exam style may suit you better.

Act early. Every month counts.

What does a UniCamillus degree cost compared with cheaper options?

Tuition for the English-taught Medicine and Surgery programme at UniCamillus Rome is €21,000 per year. With a planning figure of about €1,100 per month for living in Rome, six years cost roughly €205,000 in total.

English-taught medical faculties elsewhere in Europe start at around €3,500 a year. Six years there come to about €21,000 in tuition. For families paying out of pocket, the difference of more than €100,000 is often decisive.

How to transfer from UniCamillus without losing a year

Losing a year is the biggest fear in almost every transfer conversation. In practice it depends on the number of passed exams, how well they match the receiving curriculum and the timing of your application.

Medschool Experts regularly achieves high placements for transfer students. We cannot promise a specific year before the receiving faculty has decided. We can make sure your file shows every credit clearly, which is what drives a good placement.

How do UniCamillus credits convert into ECTS?

UniCamillus, like every Italian university, awards CFU. One CFU is one ECTS credit, so 60 CFU for a completed year equal 60 ECTS throughout the European Higher Education Area.

Where students need help is the content match. UniCamillus teaches some subjects in integrated courses that combine several disciplines under one exam. The receiving faculty needs syllabi with hours and topics to see which of its own modules those courses cover. We prepare that comparison with you.

Which universities accept transfer students from UniCamillus?

There are several English-taught medical faculties in Europe that take transfer students from UniCamillus Rome. The right one for you depends on your credits, budget and career plans.

We do not publish a general list, because a list does not know your transcript. In a free consultation about your transfer, we look at your record and tell you which options are realistic.

What documents do you need to leave UniCamillus?

The core of your file is the official transcript of records from UniCamillus, the syllabi of your passed courses and proof of enrolment. Requirements for translations, stamps and legalisation differ from country to country. We tell you the exact list for your chosen options, so nothing is requested twice.

How long does a transfer from UniCamillus take?

Allow three to six months between the first consultation and your first day at the new faculty. Most transfers start with a new academic year or semester.

Is your degree still recognised after leaving UniCamillus?

Yes. When you complete your studies at another EU medical faculty, that faculty awards your degree, and it is recognised under Directive 2005/36/EC like any EU medical qualification. The minimum of five years and 5,500 hours of training is met by every accredited EU programme, so the transfer changes nothing about recognition.

Why plan your UniCamillus transfer with Medschool Experts?

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Our experts have close to ten years of experience in study transfers worldwide and therefore plan and carry out a transfer from UniCamillus Rome with confidence, from the credit comparison to the first day at the new faculty. The author's view

UniCamillus is a young university, founded in 2017, and it has attracted students from all over the world to Rome. I understand the appeal. When I began my own studies in Sofia in 2015, at 24, I was also drawn to a city abroad and a programme in English.

What I have learned since, working with more than 500 students we have placed, is that the right university at 19 is not always the right one at 21. Costs change, exams go wrong, plans shift. A transfer is simply the tool that lets you adjust without throwing away what you have already achieved.

From our office in Bern, I see the same pattern every year: students who reach out in spring have choices, students who wait until autumn have fewer. If UniCamillus no longer fits, do not wait for the problem to solve itself.

  • Failed exams are a common and solvable reason to transfer.
  • Many students transfer without losing study time when they plan early.

Conclusion

A transfer from UniCamillus Rome is a sound option when tuition, a blocked exam or the clinical setting in Rome no longer fits. The credits you have earned move with you, and a well-prepared file protects your study time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer from UniCamillus to another medical school?

Yes. Students of Medicine and Surgery at UniCamillus Rome can transfer to other medical faculties in Europe. The receiving university reviews the transcript and syllabi and decides on the entry year. Medschool Experts prepares the whole process with you, and the first consultation is free.

Will I lose a year if I leave UniCamillus?

I failed a year at UniCamillus. Is a transfer still possible?

Yes. A failed year at UniCamillus Rome does not block a transfer. Your passed exams keep their value, and a transfer lets you continue where those credits count instead of repeating the same exam under the same conditions.

How do UniCamillus credits convert into ECTS?

UniCamillus awards CFU, and one CFU equals one ECTS credit. A completed year of 60 CFU therefore equals 60 ECTS. The receiving faculty then compares the content of your courses with its own modules.

Is studying medicine elsewhere cheaper than at UniCamillus?
