Short answer

Transfer from Glasgow Medicine: £62,730 a year for international students, failed exams, SCQF credits to ECTS and switching medical school without losing a year.

The University of Glasgow runs a five-year MBChB with clinical teaching across the hospitals of the west of Scotland. For international students it is also one of the most expensive medical programmes in the United Kingdom, at about €72,800 (£62,730) per year in 2026/27. That figure alone explains why some students eventually look into a transfer from Glasgow Medicine to another medical school.

Fees are rarely the only trigger. A failed resit, a repeat year that would add another full year of international tuition, or a Student visa that depends on staying on course can all make a change of university the more sensible plan.

This guide covers the transfer from the University of Glasgow: failed exams, full costs, how SCQF credits convert into ECTS, what happens to your visa and how to switch without losing a year.

Last reviewed: September 2026.

Is a transfer from Glasgow Medicine possible?

Quick answer: Yes. MBChB students at the University of Glasgow can transfer to English-taught medical faculties in Europe. A year of 120 SCQF credits equals 60 ECTS. The receiving faculty compares your transcript and course descriptors with its curriculum and decides the entry year. With early planning, many students keep their study time.

Your passed courses at Glasgow are not lost when you leave. They are the foundation of your placement at the next faculty.

Why do international students leave Glasgow Medicine?

Money is the most common reason. At about €72,800 a year, Glasgow sits near the top of UK medical fees for international students. Five years of tuition come to roughly €364,000.

Progression is next. A failed resit can lead to a repeat year, and for an international student that means another full year of fees and a longer Student visa.

The third reason is simply fit. Some students realise after a few semesters that a different teaching style, city or cost structure suits them better. That says nothing about the quality of Glasgow. It is a personal decision.

Failed exams at Glasgow — what are your options?

Failing an exam at the University of Glasgow is not the end of your path. Resits are built into every UK medical programme.

The real decision comes after a failed resit or when the school proposes a repeat year. At €72,800 per year, repeating is a costly option. A transfer lets your passed courses count elsewhere, so you keep moving forward.

Timing decides a lot.

How much does Glasgow Medicine cost compared with other options?

International tuition for the MBChB at Glasgow is about €72,800 (£62,730) per year in 2026/27. With a planning figure of about €1,400 a month for living costs in Glasgow, five years cost around €448,000.

English-taught medical faculties elsewhere in Europe start at about €3,500 per year in tuition. Even over a six-year programme, that is about €21,000.

Can you leave Glasgow without losing a year?

In many cases, yes. It depends on your passed courses, how well they match the receiving curriculum and when you apply. Starting in spring gives you more room than reacting to a resit result in August.

Medschool Experts regularly achieves high placements for transfer students, including from Scottish medical schools. The receiving faculty decides your entry year, so we do not promise a year before that decision.

How do Glasgow credits convert into ECTS?

Glasgow, like all Scottish universities, uses the SCQF credit framework. A full year carries 120 SCQF credits, which equal 60 ECTS. Two SCQF credits correspond to one ECTS credit.

The content comparison matters more than the arithmetic. Glasgow's integrated, case-based teaching does not always map subject by subject onto a continental curriculum. Course descriptors with learning outcomes and hours make the match visible. We prepare this with you.

What happens to your Student visa when you leave Glasgow?

The University of Glasgow sponsors your Student visa. When you withdraw, it reports this to the Home Office and your permission to stay is shortened. For a faculty in the EU you need that country's residence permit. We align the dates so you move between statuses without unnecessary gaps.

Which documents does a transfer from Glasgow need?

Your file starts with an official transcript from the University of Glasgow, the course descriptors of what you have passed and confirmation of your enrolment status. Apostille and translation rules depend on the destination country. We give you the exact list once your options are clear.

How long does a transfer from Glasgow Medicine take?

Allow three to six months from the first consultation to your start at the new faculty.

Is your degree recognised after a transfer from Glasgow?

Yes. When you graduate from an EU medical faculty, your degree is recognised throughout the EU under Directive 2005/36/EC. The UK has been outside this system since Brexit, so graduates who later want to practise in the UK apply to the General Medical Council through its route for international medical graduates.

The author's view

Glasgow is a school with a proud medical tradition, and its fees for international students reflect that. At about €72,800 a year, even a well-off family has to think carefully about a repeat year.

When I boarded at Shrewsbury School in England at 16, I watched classmates work through three science A-levels. I learned then how much commitment British medical admissions demand, and I understand how painful it is when one exam threatens all that effort.

My own path started in Sofia in 2015, when I was 24. Since then, and now from our office in Bern, we have placed more than 500 students. Changing course is part of many medical careers. Doing it early and calmly is what makes the difference.
