Transfer from the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno: Where to Continue Veterinary Medicine in 2026
21.10.2026
Short answer
Failed a repeated course or terminated at VETUNI Brno? Credit rules, appeals and how to transfer to a vet faculty from €3,000 per semester.
Is a transfer from the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno possible in 2026?
Yes. Veterinary students at the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno (VETUNI) can transfer to another veterinary faculty in 2026, whether their studies are going well or they are struggling with credits and repeated courses. Passed courses and ECTS credits stay on the transcript. Medschool Experts organises the move to a matching European partner university, and the consultation is free.
Quick answer. VETUNI Brno students can transfer in 2026 and take their passed ECTS credits with them. As a rule of thumb, no more than two exams should be open, and their credits must stay below a maximum. Our partner faculties teach Veterinary Medicine in English from €3,000 per semester. Medschool Experts plans the full transfer after a free consultation.

VETUNI is the only university in the Czech Republic that trains veterinarians. It was founded in 1918, teaches the six-year programme in Czech and in English, and is known for its large clinical caseload. Leaving it is therefore rarely about quality. It is about whether the rules, the costs and the setting still fit your situation.
What do the VETUNI Brno exam regulations say about resits and failing a year?
The Study and Examination Regulations in the Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programmes of the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno (version in force since 1 July 2020) give each exam a regular term and a limited number of resit terms. A failed course must be registered again the next year. Enrolment in the next year requires enough credits and every repeated course passed.
The Czech system works with credits rather than with a "conditional year" in the Polish sense. Every course carries ECTS credits, and a full year is worth 60. To enrol in the next year, usually in early September, you must have collected the number of credits the regulation requires. You must also have passed every course that you registered for the second time. If either condition is missing, the faculty states it clearly: students who do not qualify must end their studies at the faculty.
Inside one academic year, the pressure builds through the exam periods. In 2025/26 the winter exam period ran for five weeks, from 5 January to 6 February 2026, and the summer period for six weeks, from 25 May to 7 July 2026. Every exam has a regular term and resit terms. Exam dates fill up quickly, and the faculty itself warns students not to leave revision to the last minute, because there may be no free dates left to register for. A sitting you miss without an excuse counts against you.
| Rule | What applies | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment types | Each course ends with a credit (zápočet), an exam, or both. Exams are oral, written, practical or combined. | Study and Examination Regulations 2020 |
| Exam sittings | A regular term plus a limited number of resit terms within the exam period. When the last permitted sitting is failed, the course must be registered again next year. | Study and Examination Regulations 2020 |
| Grades | A (excellent) to E (sufficient); FX and F are fails. | ECTS grading used by VETUNI |
| Credits | 60 ECTS per year, 360 ECTS for the degree. | Study plan 2026/2027 |
| Enrolment in the next year | Only with the required number of credits and with every repeated course passed. | Study and Examination Regulations 2020 |
| Repeated course failed again | Studies are terminated for failure to meet the requirements. | Higher Education Act, § 56 |
| Entry into the final year | All credits of years 1 to 5 must be completed. | Study plan |
| Review of a termination decision | Request for review within 30 days of the decision being delivered. | Higher Education Act, § 68 |
| Exam periods 2025/26 | Winter 5 Jan – 6 Feb 2026, summer 25 May – 7 Jul 2026; enrolment early September. | Academic calendar |
Oral exams are common, especially in the morphological and clinical subjects. Students usually get around 15 minutes of preparation and around 30 minutes of examination. Grades follow the ECTS scale from A to E, with FX and F as fails.
The most dangerous rule is the second registration. A course you fail in all its sittings is not lost for good. You register it again next year. But if you fail that repeated course again, the studies end. That rule turns one difficult subject, typically anatomy or physiology, into a two-year risk.
One more structural rule applies at the end. To enter the sixth year, all credits from years one to five must be complete, including the required practical training. A gap at the end of year five usually means an extra year.
Check the exact number of resit terms and the credit threshold for your year in the current version of the regulation and in your study information system. They decide how much room you really have.
What happens if you are dismissed from VETUNI Brno?
At VETUNI Brno, studies end with a formal decision of the dean when a student fails to meet the requirements of the study programme, for example by missing the credits for enrolment or failing a repeated course. Under the Czech Higher Education Act, you can request a review within 30 days. Your passed credits remain on your transcript.
In Czech terms this is "ukončení studia pro nesplnění požadavků", termination of studies for failure to meet the requirements under § 56 of the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998). The decision is delivered to you in writing. The day of termination is the day the decision becomes final.
- The 30-day window. A request for review (žádost o přezkoumání) can be filed within 30 days of the decision being delivered. The rector decides on it. Use it when there are concrete grounds, such as an illness or an administrative error.
- The termination form. The faculty also has a form for students who end their studies themselves. A voluntary termination before a negative decision can sometimes be the cleaner option for your record. Discuss it with us before signing anything.
- Your credits remain. All passed courses with ECTS and grades stay on your transcript. That record is what a receiving faculty assesses.
- Unpaid tuition matters. VETUNI does not readmit applicants with unpaid tuition from earlier studies, so settle outstanding instalments before you leave.
Timing is the key. Act before the decision arrives, ideally when it becomes clear in June or July that the credits for enrolment will not be reached. While you are still enrolled, documents are easier to obtain, and the transfer can be planned for the next semester start. We help in both situations, before and after termination.
Which subjects do students fail most at VETUNI Brno?
At VETUNI Brno, the bottleneck subjects are anatomy and histology with embryology in the first year, physiology from the second semester, and then pathological morphology, pathological physiology and pharmacology in the second year. Microbiology, immunology, parasitology and toxicology follow. Many of these exams are oral and cover large amounts of material.
Anatomy is the first big test. In the English study plan, Anatomy I runs in the winter semester and Anatomy II in the summer semester, where it alone is worth 8 ECTS. That makes it the heaviest single course of the first year. Students learn the bones, muscles and organs of several species, recognise structures on specimens and explain them in an oral exam. Histology and Embryology I sits next to it in the winter semester, with slide identification and precise terminology.
Physiology I starts in the summer semester of year one and continues into the second year. It is the subject where students must connect anatomy, cell biology and chemistry. Basic sciences such as chemistry and biophysics are often examined with written tests, which suit some students and not others.
In the second year, Pathological Morphology I, Pathological Physiology I and Pharmacology and Pharmacy I arrive together in the summer semester, alongside Microbiology II and Immunology. Students frequently describe that semester as the second wall after anatomy. In the third year, Parasitology and Toxicology add more species, agents and doses.
Veterinary study in Brno is demanding, and not every student finishes in six years. The university offers study, career and psychological counselling, and peer tutors from higher years support students at risk.
So the first two years decide most outcomes. A failed Anatomy II or Physiology I, registered a second time, is the classic case we see from Brno.
What do students criticise about VETUNI Brno?
Recurring criticism of the English veterinary programme at VETUNI Brno concerns the language barrier in clinics with Czech-speaking owners, organisation and communication around the English programme, high exam stress after failed attempts, and the cost of around €7,900 per year. Students praise the large caseload, the facilities and the practical training.
These themes appear repeatedly in student reviews and public discussions over several years.
- Language on the wards. Students on the English track often say that talking to Czech-speaking owners is the hardest part of clinical work, so Czech classmates tend to lead the conversation with clients. The curriculum includes Czech courses, but clinical Czech takes years.
- Organisation of the English programme. Students frequently report that information for the English groups arrives late or gets lost, and that the international groups are less integrated with the Czech students.
- Exam stress. Students describe high stress during the exam periods, especially after a failed attempt, when the remaining sittings and the second-registration rule start to weigh.
- Costs. €7,900 per year plus rent in Brno is a considerable sum over six years, and tuition has risen over time.
For some students these points are exactly why a different faculty fits better, for example one where clinical teaching in English is the norm or where the cost is lower. In that situation we look for a partner faculty where your credits count and the setting suits you. We help with that every day.
To be fair: VETUNI Brno has real strengths. Its small animal hospital, exotic animal facilities, 24-hour emergency service, mobile farm clinic and large clinical caseload are widely praised, and many students value the hands-on training in small groups.
Failed exams at VETUNI Brno: what now?
If you have failed an exam at VETUNI Brno, check how many resit terms you have left in the current exam period and whether the course is already registered for the second time. A first-time course can be registered again next year. A failed repeated course ends the studies, so that case needs a plan before the last sitting.
A short decision guide:
- Regular term failed. Book a resit date early, before they fill up. Ask the examiner what went wrong; oral exams often fail on structure, not knowledge.
- Last resit of a first registration failed. You can register the course again next year. Check whether you still reach the credits for enrolment.
- Credits for enrolment at risk. Count your credits in June. If the threshold is out of reach, the enrolment in September will fail.
- Repeated course at risk. This is the critical case. If the second registration fails, the studies end. Talk to us before the last sitting, not after it.
Language adds its own layer. Czech Language I appears in the first-year study plan, and later clinical years assume that you can at least follow a conversation with an owner. Students who fall behind in Czech often feel it most in the clinics, where they watch rather than lead.
Interruption of studies is possible under Czech law, but it pauses the clock rather than solving an open course. And a voluntary termination is a decision that should be made with a clear next step in hand.
Why do students consider a transfer from VETUNI Brno?
Students consider leaving VETUNI Brno for five recurring reasons in 2026: failed or repeated courses that put enrolment at risk, the cost of €7,900 per year over six years, limited active case work in English, the wish for a different exam format, and personal reasons such as family, health or distance from home.
- Exam risk. The second-registration rule leaves no room for a second failure. A faculty with a different exam format can change the outcome.
- Costs. Six years at €7,900 plus living costs is a large investment. Our partner faculties teach Veterinary Medicine from €3,000 per semester.
- Clinical work in English. Students who want to lead cases themselves look for faculties where English is the working language with clients.
- Exam format. Some students do better with written or structured practical exams than with long oral exams.
- Personal circumstances. Family, health or the wish to live closer to home can make a move sensible.
A student who is doing well in Brno has every reason to stay. For everyone else, the question is fit, and fit can be planned.
How are credits from VETUNI Brno recognised (ECTS)?
Credits from VETUNI Brno are recognised through the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Each year is worth 60 credits and the degree 360. A receiving veterinary faculty compares every passed course by content, hours and credits with its own curriculum. The rule of thumb in 2026: usually no more than two exams may be open, and their credits must stay below a maximum.
VETUNI's English programme is listed in the European course catalogue with 360 ECTS over six years, so your transcript already uses the common European unit. Receiving faculties look beyond course names. They check the hours of anatomy, physiology and pathology, the practical components, the clinical rotations and any completed external practical training. VETUNI itself uses a "Recognition of Previous Studies" procedure for students coming in, which shows how routine this comparison is between faculties.
The international picture explains why European transfers are the practical route. In the United Kingdom, universities count CATS credits: 120 credits make one academic year, and 2 UK credits roughly equal 1 ECTS. In the United States, veterinary schools work with semester credit hours and very rarely accept transfer students into a running Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme. In the EU, the common 60-ECTS year and the shared minimum training standards for veterinarians make faculty-to-faculty transfers far more realistic. That is why Medschool Experts works with European partner faculties for veterinary transfers.
Faculties often place transfer students into higher years when the record is complete. Every case is checked individually, and gaps can sometimes be closed in the first semesters after the move.
Which universities accept transfer students from VETUNI Brno?
Veterinary students from VETUNI Brno can transfer to European veterinary faculties that admit students with ECTS credits into higher years. Medschool Experts has 25+ partner universities in Europe specifically for this situation, with English-taught Veterinary Medicine. The right faculty depends on your transcript, your open or repeated courses and the country where you want to work.
We do not publish a list of target faculties. A student with a complete first year and one failed Pathological Physiology exam needs a different match than a student whose studies were terminated after a failed repeated course. We compare your record with our partner network and present the option where your credits count the most.

Can I transfer from VETUNI Brno without losing a year?
Yes, in many cases. Transfers from VETUNI Brno can often be planned so that you continue at the matching level, especially when no more than two exams are open and their credits stay below the faculty's maximum. Medschool Experts aims for the highest possible entry year and times the move to the next semester start in 2026 or 2027.
Three factors decide whether you lose time:
- Open and repeated courses. Every open exam has to be made up before or after the move. A failed repeated course needs a faculty that will credit everything else.
- Curriculum overlap. Courses are matched by content. Brno's six-year, 12-semester structure is close to many European programmes, which helps.
- Timing. Starting the transfer in spring, before the summer exam period and the September enrolment, keeps far more options open than starting after a termination.
Stay enrolled at VETUNI until the new study place is confirmed in writing. It keeps your options open and your record without gaps.

Yes. A veterinary degree from an EU member state is automatically recognised across the European Union under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, and that applies after a transfer within the EU as well. The United Kingdom and the United States have their own registration routes for graduates of European veterinary faculties.
- European Union. Directive 2005/36/EC sets minimum training requirements for veterinary surgeons and provides for automatic recognition of the qualifications listed in its annex. National registration can still include steps such as language proof.
- United Kingdom. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) registers vets. Graduates whose degree is not on its list of recognised qualifications sit the RCVS Statutory Membership Examination; English language proof may be required.
- United States. Graduates of European veterinary schools complete the ECFVG programme or the PAVE programme, pass the NAVLE and apply for a state licence.
Decide early where you want to work. It shapes which partner faculty fits the rest of your degree.

The author's view
When I started dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia in 2015, I was 24 and already felt behind. Oral exams were the norm there, too, and I remember standing in front of an examiner with a perfectly learned topic and still losing the thread. So I understand Brno students who write to us after an oral anatomy or physiology exam. The knowledge was there. The format was not their friend that day.
VETUNI is a university I respect. Its clinics and caseload are among the strongest anywhere in the region. What makes Brno hard for some international students is the combination of a rule with no second chance on a repeated course, oral exams, and clinical work with owners who mostly speak Czech. None of that is unfair. It simply does not suit everyone.
My advice: count your credits in June, not in September. If a repeated course is wobbling, plan the alternative while you are still enrolled. A transfer planned calmly in spring almost always ends better than one planned after a termination letter, although we handle both.
Summary
- Veterinary students at the University of Veterinary Sciences Brno can transfer to another veterinary faculty in 2026 and keep their passed ECTS credits.
- At VETUNI Brno, enrolment in the next year requires enough credits and every repeated course passed; a failed repeated course ends the studies.
- A termination decision at VETUNI Brno can be reviewed within 30 days, and passed credits stay on the transcript for a transfer.
- Typical bottlenecks at VETUNI Brno are Anatomy I and II, Histology and Embryology and Physiology, then pathology and pharmacology in year two.
- Students at VETUNI Brno praise the clinics and caseload but criticise the language barrier with Czech owners, organisation and exam stress.
- Compared with €7,900 tuition per year at VETUNI Brno, our European partner faculties teach Veterinary Medicine in English from €3,000 per semester.
Conclusion
VETUNI Brno is a strong veterinary university with excellent clinics, and many students graduate there successfully. If credits, a repeated course, costs or the language situation have made the next step uncertain, a transfer can keep your veterinary career on track. Frequently Asked Questions about a transfer from VETUNI Brno
Do I need an agency to transfer from VETUNI Brno?
You do not have to, but it helps. A veterinary transfer depends on curriculum matching, deadlines and the receiving faculty's capacity. Medschool Experts has almost 10 years of experience with study transfers and 25+ partner universities in Europe specifically for this situation. The consultation is free.
Can I transfer from VETUNI Brno without losing a year?
Often, yes. When no more than two exams are open and their credits stay below the receiving faculty's maximum, we aim to place you in the matching year. Every transcript is checked individually, and the entry year is confirmed before you leave Brno.
My studies at VETUNI Brno were terminated. Can I still transfer?
Yes. Termination for failure to meet the requirements does not erase your passed courses. Every passed course with its ECTS stays on your transcript. Contact us as early as possible, ideally before the decision, because the options are wider while you are still enrolled.
How many credits or ECTS do I need for a transfer from VETUNI Brno?
There is no single number. As a rule of thumb, usually no more than two exams may be open and their credits must stay below a maximum. VETUNI counts 60 ECTS per year, and receiving faculties compare content and hours, not only course names.
Which documents do I need from VETUNI Brno?
Usually a transcript of records with ECTS and grades, the course descriptions for passed subjects, and confirmation of your study status or of termination. We tell you exactly which documents the chosen partner faculty requires.
What does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost?
Nothing. The first consultation is free and without obligation. We look at your credits, your open or repeated courses and your goals, and tell you what is realistic.
How many resits does VETUNI Brno allow?
Each exam at VETUNI Brno has a regular term and a limited number of resit terms set by the Study and Examination Regulations. If all sittings are failed, the course is registered again next year, and failing that repeated course ends the studies. Check the exact number for your course in the study information system.
Can I work as a vet in the USA after studying in Europe?
Yes, through a separate route. Graduates of European veterinary schools complete ECFVG or PAVE, pass the NAVLE and apply for a state licence. In the EU, Directive 2005/36/EC provides for automatic recognition of veterinary degrees.
How do the costs compare with VETUNI Brno?
VETUNI Brno charges €7,900 tuition per year for the English Veterinary Medicine programme in 2026. Our European partner faculties teach Veterinary Medicine in English from €3,000 per semester. Medicine and Dentistry start from €1,750 per semester and Pharmacy from €1,500.
When should I start planning a transfer from VETUNI Brno?
As early as possible, ideally in spring, before the summer exam period and the September enrolment. Early planning keeps more partner faculties available and gives you time to close open exams.
Do I have to pay outstanding tuition before leaving VETUNI Brno?
Yes, settle it. VETUNI does not readmit applicants with unpaid tuition from earlier studies, and outstanding instalments can delay the documents you need for your transfer.
