Studying medicine in Moldova costs €6,000 a year in tuition at Nicolae Testemitanu State University, plus about €425 a month to live in Chisinau.

Tuition at Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau runs €6,000 a year for the six-year Medicine programme in the 2025–2026 admissions cycle. That number is real. It also opens more questions than it answers: what living costs come with it, how the six years are structured, and what a degree from Chisinau is worth once you graduate.

Moldova's capital is not the first city people picture when they think about studying medicine abroad. It is, however, home to the country's only state medical university, a campus that has trained doctors since 1945, and an English-taught track built for exactly this kind of applicant. Marcel Kloos, who studied dentistry in Sofia between 2015 and 2021 and is a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland and the founder of Medschool Experts, has spent years comparing tuition structures like this one across a dozen countries.

This piece works through the real numbers: university fees by programme, monthly living costs in Chisinau, the shape of the six-year curriculum, and what the World Directory of Medical Schools, ECFMG and the EU's directive on professional qualifications mean for a Moldovan degree in practice.

How much does tuition cost at Nicolae Testemitanu State University?

Medicine at Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy costs €6,000 per academic year for the 2025–2026 intake, payable in the language track of your choice: Romanian, English, French or Russian. A one-time €100 admission fee applies on enrolment. Stomatology costs €7,000 a year and Pharmacy €4,000.

These figures cover tuition only. Hostel accommodation, food, insurance, books and Moldova's mandatory foreign-national residence paperwork sit on top, and none of them show up in the headline number most people quote first.

ProgrammeAnnual tuition, 2025–2026
General Medicine (MD)€6,000
Stomatology (Dentistry)€7,000
Pharmacy€4,000
Veterinary Medicine€3,200
One-time admission fee€100
Annual tuition by programme, 2025–2026 Medicine €6,000 Stomatology €7,000 Pharmacy €4,000 Veterinary €3,200
Annual tuition by programme, 2025–2026.

What other Moldovan options exist besides the six-year Medicine track?

Nicolae Testemitanu is Moldova's only state medical university, so the choice within the country sits between programmes at one institution rather than between competing schools: Medicine, Stomatology, Pharmacy or the six-year Veterinary Medicine track, all offered in English alongside Romanian, French and Russian groups on the same Chisinau campus.

All four programmes share the same laboratories, simulation facilities and teaching hospitals. Which one fits your own background is a different question, and it depends on your transcript, not on a generic checklist. Requirements vary by programme and by each applicant's individual profile. A free individual consultation is the fastest way to get a straight answer for your own case: free individual consultation.

How much does it cost to live in Chisinau as a student?

Total student living costs in Moldova, covering accommodation, food, transport, utilities and course materials, run €400–450 a month as of August 2026. University dormitory rooms cost €40–75 a month; a private one-bedroom flat outside the city centre averaged €388 a month in September 2026.

Dorm life is cheap. It is also basic, and rooms are limited, so booking early through the international office matters more than the euro figure suggests. Students who move to a private flat after year one usually split a two-bedroom place outside the centre, which brings the per-person rent close to the dormitory band while adding privacy and a kitchen.

ItemMonthly cost
University dormitory room€40–75 (Aug 2026)
1-bedroom flat, outside centre€388 (Sep 2026)
1-bedroom flat, city centre€605 (Sep 2026)
Public transport pass€12 (Sep 2026)
Meal, inexpensive restaurant€10 (Sep 2026)
Overall living budget, all-in€400–450 (Aug 2026)

Is a Moldovan medical degree recognised internationally?

Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the global registry run under the World Federation for Medical Education's WDOMS project. Its ECFMG sponsor note confirms graduates from 1953 onward are eligible to apply for ECFMG Certification, the standard route into US residency training.

The paperwork exists. It is public, and it is checkable by anyone before enrolling, directly on the World Directory's own search tool. Since November 2024, Intealth's Recognized Accreditation Policy has reported whether an applicant's medical school holds accreditation from an agency carrying World Federation for Medical Education recognition status, and Intealth states that the policy does not affect an individual's eligibility for ECFMG certification. The Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating, a Kazakhstan-based accreditor, carries that recognition status for institutions in the Republic of Moldova through January 2028. Nicolae Testemitanu's Medicine, Stomatology and Pharmacy programmes have received international accreditation, alongside institutional accreditation running for five years.

ECFMG's 2026 requirements also ask for at least four full academic years of credit from the World Directory-listed school before certification can be granted, with the degree title matching ECFMG's own Reference Guide for Medical Education Credentials.

Does the EU's directive on professional qualifications apply to a Moldovan degree?

Directive 2005/36/EC governs automatic recognition of medical qualifications only for degrees earned inside the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. Moldova is none of these, so a Testemitanu degree does not qualify for automatic recognition in an EU member state; it goes through that state's general system instead, evaluated case by case against national requirements.

In practice, that means the competent authority in whichever EU country you target reviews your training length and content directly, rather than accepting the diploma on sight. Article 24 of the same directive sets the EU's own minimum length for basic medical training at six years or 5,500 hours, which happens to match the Chisinau programme's own length almost exactly, so the comparison point is at least a fair one.

None of this closes a door. It means the destination licence, not the Chisinau diploma alone, decides where you can practise, exactly as it would for a graduate of any medical school outside the EU. Plenty of Testemitanu graduates instead build a career through licensing systems designed specifically for international medical graduates: ECFMG and the USMLE sequence in the United States, the GMC's routes for international graduates in the United Kingdom, or NCLEX-adjacent and national licensing exams elsewhere. Each of those is a real, walkable path, not a workaround.

What does the six-year programme structure look like?

The Medicine programme at Nicolae Testemitanu runs six years, taught in English alongside Romanian, French and Russian groups, matching the minimum standard the EU itself sets for basic medical training: six years or 5,500 hours, under Directive 2005/36/EC. Early years centre on classroom and laboratory work; later years move into simulation facilities and teaching hospitals.

Six years is a long stretch. It is also the same length as a medical degree in Germany, France or Italy, so nobody studying in Chisinau is on a shortened track.

What does the timeline from acceptance to your first lecture look like?

Most incoming students move through four stages after acceptance: visa paperwork, document legalisation, travel and arrival, then orientation before lectures start on 1 September. Each stage runs on its own rough timeline rather than a single fixed date, since consulates and courier services vary by home country.

  1. Weeks 1–2 after acceptance: the university issues an official invitation letter, the document a Moldovan consulate needs to open a student visa file.
  2. Weeks 3–6: diplomas and transcripts are apostilled or legalised, then translated into Romanian or English for the visa office.
  3. Month 2: the student visa or residence-permit application is lodged at the nearest Moldovan consulate.
  4. Month 3, late August: arrival in Chisinau, dormitory check-in and local police registration, required of all foreign residents.
  5. First week of September: orientation, a campus tour and timetable confirmation.
  6. 1 September: lectures begin for the new academic year.

Six weeks of paperwork sounds slow. In practice most of it runs in parallel with packing, flight bookings and finding a flatmate, so the calendar feels shorter than the list looks.

What does a full six-year budget actually add up to?

Six years of Medicine at Nicolae Testemitanu costs roughly €70,500 all-in: €36,000 in tuition, about €30,600 in living costs at the government's own €425-a-month midpoint, close to €3,800 in mandatory foreign-national health insurance, plus the one-time €100 admission fee. Flights, visa fees and one-off settling-in costs sit outside that figure and vary by home country.

Worked example: the six-year Chisinau total.

Line itemCalculationTotal
Tuition, Medicine€6,000 × 6 years€36,000
Admission feeOne-time€100
Living costs€425 × 72 months€30,600
Health insurance (foreign nationals)~€632 × 6 years€3,792
Six-year total€70,492

Moldova's General Inspectorate for Migration lists a standard annual insurance premium of 12,636 Moldovan lei, close to €632, for foreign nationals in 2026. The living-cost figure is the midpoint of the published €400–450 range.

What do cost breakdowns for Moldova usually leave out?

Most published tuition numbers stop at the university fee and skip three things that move the real total: the mandatory foreign-national health insurance premium, the gap between dormitory and private-rental costs once a student moves out in year two, and the fact that tuition is billed in euros while daily spending happens in Moldovan lei.

That currency split matters more than it sounds. Because tuition itself is fixed in euros, a swing in the leu never touches your fee bill. It only touches your grocery budget, your rent and your phone plan, which move with the exchange rate month to month. At roughly 20 lei to the euro as of September 2026, a weaker leu makes daily life in Chisinau cheaper in euro terms, and a stronger one makes it pricier, but neither direction changes what the university charges you on paper.

The other gap is the mandatory insurance line. It rarely appears on university fee schedules at all, yet Moldova's own migration authority lists it as a standard requirement for foreign nationals in 2026, and it adds real money across six years. Real accounts from students already living through these numbers, not projections, are collected on our student stories page: student stories. For anyone weighing Moldova against other placements we handle, our services page lays out how that comparison works in practice: how we help.

The author's view

I studied dentistry in Sofia from 2015 to 2021, not medicine in Moldova, but the shape of the decision was the same one I see in every family that calls us about Chisinau: a real tuition number, a real living-cost number, and a real question about what the diploma is worth once the six years are done. I am a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland and I run Medschool Experts from Bern, and I still think about the spreadsheet I built for myself back then more often than almost any other document from that period of my life.

At Medschool Experts we have placed more than 500 students into study places across a dozen countries, and Moldova comes up more often than people expect, mostly because the tuition-to-recognition ratio is honest. €6,000 a year is not a marketing number. It is what the university itself charges, and the WDOMS listing and the ECFMG sponsor note are not something we add on top — they already exist, in public, before we ever speak to a client.

What I tell people directly is this: run the six-year total before you compare countries, not after. A Chisinau education, priced out over six years including a realistic living budget, sits in a specific place among the options we place students into, and that place is worth seeing in full before you decide anything.

Summary

  • Medicine at Nicolae Testemitanu State University costs €6,000 a year for 2025–2026, plus a one-time €100 admission fee.
  • Stomatology costs €7,000 a year and Pharmacy €4,000 a year at the same Chisinau campus.
  • Total student living costs in Moldova run €400–450 a month as of August 2026.
  • University dormitory rooms cost €40–75 a month; private flats outside the centre average €388 a month, as of September 2026.
  • The university is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, with an ECFMG sponsor note covering graduates from 1953 onward.
  • Directive 2005/36/EC does not give Moldovan degrees automatic recognition in the EU, since Moldova sits outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland; recognition runs through each country's general system instead.
  • Six years of Medicine — tuition, living costs and mandatory health insurance combined — totals roughly €70,500 by our worked calculation.
  • The Medicine programme runs six years in English, matching the EU's own minimum training length under Directive 2005/36/EC, Article 24.

Conclusion

None of these numbers are a reason to hesitate. They are the numbers, stated plainly, so a decision about Chisinau can be made on facts rather than guesswork.

Frequently Asked Questions about Studying Medicine in Moldova

How much is tuition at Nicolae Testemitanu State University in 2026?

For the 2025–2026 academic year, Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau, Moldova, charges €6,000 a year for its six-year Medicine programme, plus a one-time €100 admission fee. Stomatology costs €7,000 a year and Pharmacy €4,000. These figures cover tuition only; accommodation, food, insurance and travel are separate and typically add several thousand euros a year on top.

Is teaching really available in English for the whole six years?

Yes. Nicolae Testemitanu State University runs its Medicine programme in English as a full parallel track alongside Romanian, French and Russian groups. Lectures, seminars and clinical teaching in the later years all run in English, though many students pick up conversational Romanian or Russian for ward rounds and daily life in Chisinau.

Do I need a student visa to study medicine in Moldova?

Most non-EU nationals need a Moldovan student visa or residence permit, arranged after the university issues an official invitation letter. Foreign students are also required to hold health insurance; Moldova's General Inspectorate for Migration lists a standard annual premium of 12,636 Moldovan lei, roughly €630, for foreign nationals in 2026. Specific visa steps depend on your home country's consulate, so timing varies from one applicant to the next.

Is a degree from Moldova recognised by the World Directory of Medical Schools?

Yes. Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the registry maintained under the World Federation for Medical Education's WDOMS project. Its entry carries an ECFMG sponsor note confirming that graduates from 1953 onward are eligible to apply for ECFMG Certification, the credential US residency programmes require from international medical graduates.

Can I take the USMLE after graduating from a Moldovan medical school?

Graduates of Nicolae Testemitanu State University can apply for ECFMG Certification, the credential that opens the door to the USMLE sequence and, eventually, US residency matching. ECFMG's 2026 requirements ask for at least four full academic years of credit from a World Directory-listed school with a valid sponsor note, Intealth's Recognized Accreditation Policy additionally reports whether the school's accrediting agency holds World Federation for Medical Education recognition, and Intealth states that the policy does not affect an individual's eligibility for ECFMG certification.

Does an EU country automatically recognise a Moldovan medical degree?

No, not automatically. Directive 2005/36/EC gives automatic recognition only to medical qualifications earned within the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. Moldova sits outside all three, so a Testemitanu degree is assessed under each EU country's general recognition system instead, case by case against that country's own requirements for the medical profession. Many graduates instead pursue licensing routes built specifically for international medical graduates, such as the UK's routes for international graduates or the US ECFMG/USMLE pathway.

How does a dormitory room compare with private rent in Chisinau?

University dormitory rooms in Chisinau cost €40–75 a month as of August 2026, while a private one-bedroom flat outside the city centre averages €388 a month and one in the centre averages €605, as of September 2026. Most first-year students start in a dormitory and move to a shared private flat once they know the campus and their preferred neighbourhood.

What are the admission requirements for Nicolae Testemitanu State University?

Requirements vary by programme and by each applicant's own academic background, prior coursework and home-country diploma, so there is no single checklist that fits everyone. The fastest way to get an answer specific to your own transcript is a free individual consultation, where Medschool Experts reviews your documents and outlines the path for your case: free individual consultation.
