What Is the First Year of Medical School Like? Bosnia vs Germany

Σύντομη απάντηση
Podcast episode 3: Sophie (University of Lübeck) and Erika (Bosnia) compare dissection course, subjects and exams in the first year of medical school.
Key Takeaways
- Studying ahead before the start of term is of little benefit — both students advise against it. In Germany, the only sensible preparation is completing the nursing placement in advance.
- Access is NC-free: those who meet the requirements can secure a study place through Medschool Experts — while places remain available.
- The first year revolves around anatomy in both places: in Lübeck with weekly dissection sessions and tests, in Bosnia through staged colloquiums from bones through to the final exam.
- In Germany, around three to four major exams per semester are standard; in Bosnia, nine subjects with exams concentrated mainly in summer — both are manageable.
Should I Study Ahead Before Medical School?
The clear answer from both countries: no. Sophie recounts that after receiving her offer, out of fear of being surrounded by supposed geniuses, she used an anatomy app to learn bones — and looking back she says that made no difference to her academic success. Universities assume no prior knowledge in the foundational subjects.
“Relax and just enjoy the time — let the lectures wash over you when they actually start.” – Sophie, medical student at the University of Lübeck
Erika confirms this from Bosnia: every subject starts from zero, nobody expects prior knowledge. Her recommendation is to use the time before the start of studies consciously for family, holidays, and the upcoming move — because for most people, studying also means starting life in a new city.

How Does the Programme Begin — Freshers’ Week or Straight In?
In Lübeck, the programme begins with a freshers’ week that primarily achieves one thing: it brings people together. Sophie made the friendships there that have accompanied her to this day — in her seventh semester. The whole event is organised entirely by students themselves; the larger the university, the more elaborate the proceedings. In Lübeck this includes a legendary spoof lecture, in which older students dressed in costume announce a supposed trial exam to the newcomers — until everything resolves into an initiation ritual.
In Bosnia, this opening was noticeably more sober: on the first day the dean gave a brief welcome address, and the first anatomy professor was immediately in the lecture hall — lectures starting without any get-to-know-you phase. Erika says openly that she found this disappointing and envies the German freshers’ week a little.
Students in Bosnia have since taken matters into their own hands: after the second year of study, German students organised a white coat ceremony for the first time — a small celebration to mark the end of the first phase of study, as exists at many universities worldwide. What the study location itself looks like is shown on the Foča location page.
What Subjects Are in the First Year?
The author's view
I studied abroad myself — dentistry in Sofia, from 2015 to 2021, starting at 24. Access to a medical programme abroad is NC-free and runs through placement by Medschool Experts — the real work begins in the first semester, and no university in the world takes that off your plate.
That is exactly why we make this podcast: not to romanticise studying abroad, but to show honestly what daily life there actually looks like — from someone in the thick of it. Erika is one of our placed students, and conversations like this are, in my view, the most honest picture you can get before making your own decision.
Conclusion: The First Year Is Demanding Everywhere — and Manageable Everywhere
- Do not study ahead — the time before the programme belongs to family, friends, and the move.
- Access to the study place in Bosnia is NC-free — arranged through Medschool Experts.
- Anatomy dominates the first year — whether through weekly tests in dissection sessions or staged colloquiums.
- Whether three exams per semester or nine subjects in summer: both are manageable.
Sophie’s and Erika’s joint conclusion of the episode: medical school is structured very individually from university to university — but no matter how the exams are distributed, in the end “you get it done” if you really want to. What day-to-day life between lectures, lab practicals, and study phases actually looks like is covered in Episode 4: A Typical Day as a Medical Student.
Frequently Asked Questions About the First Year in Medical School
Do I need to study anatomy before medical school starts?
No. Both students report unanimously that all subjects start from zero and no prior knowledge is expected. Studying ahead with apps or books made no discernible difference to academic success — it is more worthwhile to enjoy the free time before the start.
How do you get a study place in Bosnia?
Access is NC-free — arranged through Medschool Experts. Those who meet the requirements can secure a study place while places remain available. These are usually fully booked early in the year, as it is the most affordable university in Europe for an NC-free medical degree in English at a recognised, accredited institution.
What is the hardest subject in the first semester?
Anatomy — both students agree on this. In Lübeck that means weekly tests in dissection sessions; in Bosnia, colloquiums in stages from bones through to the final exam. Above all, learning muscles with their origin, insertion, and innervation is considered the hardest rote-learning workload.
Is there an entrance test for medicine in Germany?
Not directly at most state universities. Access runs through Abitur grade, selection processes, and tests such as the TMS — and each university weights these components differently. It is worth applying specifically where your own strengths count the most.
When do exams take place in Bosnia?
Smaller colloquiums are distributed throughout the year; most final exams are concentrated in summer. In the first year, only one subject was examined after the first semester; the remaining eight at the end of the year.
In what language are exams held in Bosnia?
The programme is conducted in English, so exams are in English too. Many exams are multiple-choice on computer — with an immediate result on submission, which many students find reassuring.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
- Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
- Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
