Transferring from Split back to Germany: what really decides it

Transferring from Split back to Germany: what really decides it

Thinking about moving from Split back to Germany? What recognition really depends on, why places in higher semesters are scarce, and how we find one for you.

Transferring from Split back to Germany is something many students at the University of Split School of Medicine consider — usually around the time of the Physikum or for personal reasons. A move to a higher semester is possible, but how far up you land is decided case by case, never by a formula.

Marcel Kloos knows this situation first-hand. He is a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland and the founder of Medschool Experts, which he has run from Bern since completing his medicine and dentistry studies between 2015 and 2021 in Sofia, having started at the age of 24. His team has guided exactly these kinds of moves every single day since then. This guide explains what actually determines the outcome for Split students. Last checked: August 2026.

Why there is no formula for how much of Split counts in Germany

The question everyone asks first is how many semesters carry over. There is no reliable answer to it in table form, and anyone publishing one is guessing on your behalf. Recognition is decided individually, and what is compared is content: how closely your Split modules and passed examinations match the subjects of the German Medical Licensure Act (Approbationsordnung).

That is why two students with the same number of semesters can receive completely different decisions. Courses taken, examinations passed, the way a module is documented — all of it moves the result. It also changes from year to year and from one faculty to the next, which is precisely why we do not publish requirement lists, document checklists or date tables here. What we do instead is look at your actual records.

The Split-specific detail worth knowing

One point applies specifically to the curriculum in Split. Medical Psychology and Sociology is not taught until the third year of study there, yet it belongs to the pre-clinical subjects Germany expects to see. In practice that shifts the moment at which the complete pre-clinical phase can be considered covered — later than at universities that place the subject in the first two years.

This is not a flaw in the programme and it is not an obstacle. It is a matter of timing, and it is the single thing most Split students overlook when they start thinking about a move. Knowing it early changes when it makes sense to look at your options at all.

How places in higher semesters work in Germany

The harder truth has nothing to do with your transcript. Free places in higher semesters at German medical faculties are scarce, and they fluctuate: a location may take several transfer students in one semester and none in the next. Nobody, including us, can promise a specific university.

On top of that sits a fixed ranking order. Hardship cases come first, followed by local transfers (Ortswechsler), then external switchers (Quereinsteiger), with the lottery only as a last resort. As a student already enrolled at a state university in a comparable programme, you generally sit in the Ortswechsler group — better placed than an external switcher, but still competing for a small number of places that the university alone controls.

That combination — an individual recognition decision plus a scarce and shifting supply of places — is what makes a move back to Germany unpredictable when you plan it alone. It is also exactly the part we take off your hands.

What Croatia already gives you

Worth holding on to while you weigh things up: Croatia is an EU member state. A completed degree from Split is therefore automatically recognised for the Approbation in Germany under Directive 2005/36/EC — no knowledge examination. Finishing where you started is a fully valid route to practising in Germany, and for many students it turns out to be the faster one.

So the real question is not "how do I get out of Split", but "where do I finish, and where can I be placed reliably". Those are two different questions, and the second one is the one worth answering carefully.

How we find out where you can go

Send us your profile: your school certificate, your transcripts and proof of the semesters you have completed in Split, and the countries you would consider. We look at it personally — not against a generic table, but against what our partner universities actually accept right now.

Then we tell you two things. First, at which university in which country we can place you with exactly that profile. Second, where we can get you in reliably, rather than leaving you to spend a year on an application that may come back empty. For students already partway through a degree we always check the highest possible entry point; entry into the final two years is frequently achievable.

Behind that stands the largest network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. If staying in Split is the better plan for you, we will say so plainly. A free consultation gives you a first orientation in a few minutes, and everything else we work out together in a free consultation — with no obligation and free of charge.

The author's view

What strikes me again and again with Split students is how much energy goes into counting semesters. People arrive with a spreadsheet and a number in their head, and the number is almost never the thing that decides the outcome. What decides it is content, documentation, and whether a place happens to be free somewhere at that moment.

The other thing I see often: nobody tells these students that finishing in Split is already a perfectly good answer. Croatia is in the EU, the degree is recognised automatically, and the certainty of staying put is worth a great deal. My job is to say that out loud when it is true — and to find the better option when it is not.

Summary

  • How much of a Split degree carries over to Germany is decided individually and compares content, not semester counts — there is no reliable formula.
  • Split teaches Medical Psychology and Sociology in the third year, which shifts the point at which the pre-clinical phase can be treated as complete.
  • Free places in higher semesters at German faculties are scarce and fluctuate from semester to semester; no one can promise a specific university.
  • In the German allocation order, hardship cases rank first, then local transfers, then external switchers, with the lottery last.
  • Croatia is an EU member, so a completed degree from Split is automatically recognised for the Approbation under Directive 2005/36/EC.

Conclusion

Where you finish your degree is not something a table on a website can decide for you. It depends on your transcripts, on what our partner universities accept right now, and on how quickly you want certainty.

Send us your school certificate, your Split transcripts and the countries you would consider. We will tell you at which university in which country we can place you and where we can get you in reliably — checking the highest possible entry point, frequently into the final two years — across our network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. The first step is a free consultation.

Frequently asked questions about moving from Split back to Germany

How many semesters from Split will be recognised in Germany?

There is no dependable number, because the decision is made individually and compares content rather than counting semesters. Two students with the same number of semesters can end up in different places. Send us your transcripts and we will assess your case properly instead of guessing — and tell you where we can place you reliably.

How do I find out what is realistic for me?

By sending us your profile. Requirements and procedures differ from faculty to faculty and change from year to year, which is why we do not publish lists of them. We look at your school certificate, your Split transcripts and the countries you would consider, and tell you at which university in which country we can place you and where we can get you in reliably. Our partner network covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine.

Why does Medical Psychology and Sociology matter for Split students?

Because Split teaches it in the third year of study, while Germany counts it among the pre-clinical subjects. That shifts the point at which the pre-clinical phase can be treated as complete. It is a timing question, not a problem with the programme — but it is the detail most people miss.

Can I move back after the Physikum?

A change of university is possible well into the programme, but not into the final year: at European universities the concluding faculty carries responsibility for that last phase of training. How far up you can enter is exactly what we check for you.

What is the difference between a local transfer and an external switcher?

Local transfers (Ortswechsler) are students already enrolled at a state university in the same programme. In the German allocation order they rank above external switchers (Quereinsteiger) but below hardship cases. It improves your position; it guarantees nothing, since each university decides for itself.

Why are places in higher semesters so hard to come by?

Because they only exist where someone else has left. The number varies from semester to semester and from university to university, so a location that took several transfer students last year may take none this year. That unpredictability is the main reason people come to us rather than trying it alone.

Does Split count as an EU university for the Approbation?

Yes. Croatia is an EU member, so a completed degree from Split is automatically recognised for the Approbation in Germany under Directive 2005/36/EC — without a knowledge examination.

Would it be better to simply finish in Split?

For a good number of students, yes. Finishing where you started avoids the uncertainty entirely and still ends in a degree that Germany recognises automatically. Which of the two paths fits your situation is something we go through with you honestly, without talking you into a move you do not need.

Will I lose my place in Split while I explore other options?

No. You stay enrolled in Split unless and until a move is actually confirmed, so looking at your options costs you nothing.

Does this only apply to human medicine?

No. We look at the same question for dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, drawing on the same network of official partner universities.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
