Medical Degree Recognition: UK and Poland Explained

Medical Degree Recognition: UK and Poland Explained

Σύντομη απάντηση

How a European-earned medical or dental degree is recognised for practice in the UK post-Brexit, and how it stands in Poland under EU rules, explained plainly.

Poland is the second-largest foreign-born community in the UK, and for many British-Polish families the question of "what if" never quite goes away. You grow up in Manchester or London, hold a British passport and maybe a Polish one too, and your grandparents still talk about Kraków or Gdańsk as home. If medicine or dentistry is the plan and the numbers at UK universities do not work out, studying elsewhere in Europe becomes a real option, and English-taught medical and dental programmes across the EU take in thousands of international students every year.

What is less often explained is what happens to that degree afterwards, in both directions. This article does not point you toward one particular university as the answer. It simply walks through how a medical or dental degree earned at a European university gets recognised for practice in the UK, and how the same degree stands in Poland, so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.

Before Brexit, an EU-earned medical or dental degree slotted into the UK system almost automatically. That changed. A degree from an EU or EEA university is now treated the same way as a degree from anywhere else outside the UK, and the General Medical Council and General Dental Council run separate processes to check it.

Why an EU Medical Degree No Longer Walks Straight Into GMC Registration

Doctors who trained in the EU used to register with the GMC under a "relevant European qualification" route that asked for little more than proof of the degree and good standing. That automatic channel is gone. Graduates of EU medical schools now sit alongside graduates from India, Pakistan or anywhere else outside the UK, and the GMC charges the same registration fees no matter where the degree was earned.

The PLAB Route and the Medical Licensing Assessment Standard

For most overseas graduates, the route into UK practice runs through the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test, known as PLAB. PLAB 1 is a written exam testing clinical knowledge and decision-making, and PLAB 2 is an objective structured clinical examination built around simulated patient scenarios. Since the introduction of the UK Medical Licensing Assessment, PLAB has been aligned to the same MLA content map that UK medical schools now use for their own final-year students, so the exam sets the same bar for everyone entering the register, wherever they trained. Before the GMC will consider your application, you also need to demonstrate English proficiency, usually through IELTS or the Occupational English Test. For someone who grew up and went to school in the UK, this is normally a formality, but it still has to be documented through GMC Online.

What GMC Registration Gives You, and What It Doesn't

Passing PLAB and meeting the other requirements gets you full GMC registration with a licence to practise. It does not automatically hand you a training post. The UK Foundation Programme, the two-year scheme newly qualified doctors normally complete after graduation, allocates only a limited number of places to international medical graduates each year, and competition is real. Many overseas-qualified doctors instead apply directly for trust-grade or specialty posts once registered, a normal and common route into the NHS.

Dentistry's Separate Gate: the ORE

For dentists, the equivalent hurdle is the Overseas Registration Examination run by the General Dental Council. It has two parts: a written and computer-based Part 1 covering clinical and diagnostic knowledge, and a practical Part 2 assessing clinical skills directly. Passing both leads to registration with the GDC and the right to practise dentistry in the UK.

Why the Same EU Degree Opens Doors Automatically in Poland

Turn the situation around and the picture changes completely. Poland is an EU member state, and under Directive 2005/36/EC on recognition of professional qualifications, a medical or dental degree earned at another EU or EEA university on the directive's list of recognised qualifications is accepted in Poland without the nostrification process that applies to degrees from outside the bloc.

The Izba Lekarska and the Prawo Wykonywania Zawodu

In practice, this means registering with the regional Izba Lekarska, the Chamber of Physicians for the area where you intend to practise, with that registration confirmed nationally by the Naczelna Izba Lekarska, the Supreme Medical Chamber. Because the underlying degree is EU-recognised, the chamber does not reassess your curriculum course by course the way it would for a non-EU qualification. Newly qualified doctors still complete a postgraduate internship (staż) and the Lekarski Egzamin Końcowy, the state final exam run by the Centrum Egzaminów Medycznych in Łódź, on the way to the prawo wykonywania zawodu, the formal right to practise. But the starting point, degree recognition itself, is already settled in your favour because the qualification came from within the EU.

The Other Direction: If the Degree Is Earned in the UK Instead

It is worth being clear-eyed about the reverse case too. If someone instead trains at a UK medical or dental school, that degree is now a non-EU qualification as far as Poland is concerned, since the UK left the bloc. Bringing a UK degree into the Polish system currently means nostrification at a Polish medical faculty, or the verification exam in Łódź, followed by the same internship and LEK route any non-EU graduate faces. It is the mirror image of what UK-trained doctors from the EU now face with the GMC, and worth understanding before choosing where to study, not after.

Keeping the Door to Poland Open While You Build a Career in Britain

None of this needs to be a source of anxiety. It is simply how professional recognition currently works between a country inside the EU and one outside it, and rules like these have shifted before and will likely shift again over a career that could span three or four decades. Studying medicine or dentistry in Europe does not close off practising in the UK, and it does not close off practising in Poland either, provided you understand which steps apply on each side and plan for them.

Marcel Kloos

Swiss-licensed dentist, founder and owner of Medschool Experts

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester

All articles by Marcel Kloos are based on first-hand visits to the universities, placement data from Medschool Experts and conversations with current students. Book a free consultation to discuss your own path.
