Failing medical school in Australia? Failed year, show cause notice or exclusion: what happens now and how a transfer abroad brings you back as a doctor.

At a glance

  • Australian medical schools rarely exclude after one failed exam: supplementary exams, remediation and a repeated year come first
  • Who decides: the board of examiners and the progression committee of your school, under the university's progression rules
  • Before an exclusion you usually receive a show cause notice and a short deadline to respond
  • After an exclusion, a place at another Australian medical school is very hard to get
  • Way out: transfer to a recognised medical school in Europe or the Caribbean, often into a higher year
  • Coming back: through the AMC MCQ and clinical examinations to registration in Australia, planned from day one
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

Getting a place in Medicine in Australia takes years of work, and hardly anyone tells you what happens when it goes wrong inside. Then a barrier exam is failed, the progression committee writes to you, and the letter gives you ten working days to explain yourself.

Below you find how Australian universities handle failed years, what a show cause notice means, why capable students get stuck, why an early switch saves years, and how a transfer to a recognised medical school in Europe or the Caribbean keeps your way back to Australia open.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Failing out in Australia

In short: Yes, you can be excluded from medical school in Australia, but rarely because of one exam. Each university sets its own progression rules. A failed unit or barrier exam usually leads to a supplementary exam or remediation first, then a repeated year, and only after that to a show cause notice and exclusion.

There is no national rule. Your school's assessment and progression policy decides how often you may repeat, which exams are barriers and how long you may take for the degree. Many programs allow a year to be repeated only once.

How a medical degree in Australia gets blocked: four stages

The names differ between universities, the sequence is almost always the same.

01

Supplementary exam

A failed unit, barrier exam or clinical assessment is re-examined or remediated.

02

Repeated year

The board of examiners decides you may not progress. You repeat the whole year and pay for it again.

03

Show cause notice

After repeated failure the university asks you to explain in writing why you should be allowed to continue.

04

Exclusion

Your enrolment in the program ends, subject to an appeal.

Show cause and appeals

In short: A show cause notice is your chance to explain what went wrong and what has changed. If the university excludes you anyway, you can appeal inside the university, usually within a few weeks. After an exclusion, a place at another Australian medical school is very hard to get. A medical school in Europe or the Caribbean is the realistic way to continue.

Answer the notice in time and with documents: medical certificates, proof of a family crisis, a study plan. Ask at the same time whether withdrawing in good standing is still possible. How your exit is recorded matters for every future application.

Request your academic transcript and unit outlines now, whatever the outcome. They carry your past work into the next university.

Show cause or exclusion? Continue abroad and come back as a doctor

We transfer you to recognised universities in Europe or the Caribbean whose degree lets you sit the AMC examinations. In a free consultation we check which of them accept your coursework and plan your route back to Australia.

Why students get stuck

In short: Australian medical students who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, long hours of paid work, rural placements far from home, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.

Depression shows up quietly, as lectures replayed without taking in a word. It is treatable, and a leave of absence is a legitimate tool. Some students know the material and still go blank in a barrier exam, others read slowly and were never assessed. Reasonable adjustments exist, and it is worth asking for them before the next attempt.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: If exams keep going wrong, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. The clinical years bring more material and less time. A transfer abroad while you are still in good standing saves time, stress and debt.

That is why at Medschool Experts we always advise switching early. A student who changes after the first or second year arrives abroad with recent coursework and a clean record. A student who waits for the exclusion letter arrives later and with less room to plan. Both can make it. The first one saves years.

Signs that a switch makes sense now

If two of these four apply to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the next exam.

01

You have failed a barrier exam and its supplementary.

02

You are repeating a year or have already repeated one.

03

You have received a show cause notice.

04

Your study debt grows faster than your progress.

Next four weeks

In short: Read your school's progression rules, note every deadline, talk to your year coordinator or student support, contact counselling and accessibility services, and request your transcript and unit outlines. The same documents prepare a transfer abroad.

  • Week 1: read the progression rules and write down every deadline, including the show cause and appeal deadlines.
  • Week 1 to 2: meet your year coordinator or student support and ask exactly what the next failure would trigger.
  • Week 2 to 3: if anxiety, low mood or reading speed play a part, contact counselling and accessibility services.
  • Week 3 to 4: request your transcript and the unit outlines of everything you have passed.
  • Before the committee decides: book a free transfer consultation to compare staying with a transfer abroad and a planned return to Australia.

Europe or the Caribbean

In short: A transfer from an Australian medical school to an English-taught medical school in Europe or the Caribbean is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. We place you at universities listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so that your degree lets you sit the AMC examinations and return to Australia. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers worldwide, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

The choice of university decides whether you can come home. We only place you at universities that keep the route back to Australia open, and we plan that route with you from the first day.

Returning to Australia

In short: Yes, you can come back. Graduates from abroad take the standard pathway of the Australian Medical Council: the AMC MCQ examination, then the AMC clinical examination or a workplace based assessment. With the AMC certificate you apply for provisional registration and complete a period of supervised practice before general registration.

You can retake the AMC examinations if an attempt goes wrong. The part to plan carefully is the first job: accredited intern positions in Australia go to Australian graduates first, so graduates from abroad are well advised to complete their internship in the country where they graduate and return after it. As an Australian citizen you need no visa, which removes the largest hurdle other graduates from abroad face.

We plan the way home from the very first day: a university Australia accepts, the AMC MCQ timed around your final year, and an internship that counts when you come back.

Costs compared

In short: A Commonwealth supported place in Medicine costs about €7,500 a year in student contribution, a full-fee place more than €40,000. A repeated year costs that again and adds to your study debt. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000.

Add rent in Sydney or Melbourne and a repeated year in Australia often costs more than a full year abroad that moves you forward. Caribbean universities are priced higher than European ones, and we show you the real numbers for each option in the consultation.

How we help

In short: Medschool Experts reviews your Australian transcript, unit outlines and clinical hours in a free transfer consultation, finds recognised medical schools in Europe or the Caribbean that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Australia. More than 500 students have been placed so far.

Getting started is simple. You send us your transcript, and we check what can be recognised and where. Then we plan the transfer, the paperwork and the timing together, ideally before your progression committee decides. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021, and today nobody asks how old I was in my first semester. I tell this because Australian students who write to us often believe that a show cause notice has already decided their life. It has not.

Getting in proved your ability. Getting stuck usually says something about a hard year, an illness or a way of teaching that did not fit you. Plan the next step before the committee plans it for you. That is when the most doors are open.

Summary

Failing medical school in Australia rarely happens in one moment. The university decides step by step, through supplementary exams, a repeated year and a show cause notice, and only then through exclusion. After an exclusion, a second place in Australia is very hard to get.

A transfer to a recognised medical school in Europe or the Caribbean is possible, and graduates return to Australia through the AMC MCQ and clinical examinations and a period of supervised practice. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

A show cause notice feels final, but your goal does not have to end with it. Do not wait for the clinical years to fix what the first years could not. Talk to us before the committee decides. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which recognised universities accept the coursework you already have and how you come back to Australia as a doctor. Failing medical school in Australia: 7 questions and answers

Can you be excluded from medical school in Australia?

Yes, but rarely because of one exam. Failed units usually lead to a supplementary exam, then a repeated year and a show cause notice, and only then to exclusion.

What is a show cause notice?

A letter asking you to explain in writing why you should be allowed to continue. Answer it in time and with documents such as medical certificates and a study plan.

Can I move to another Australian medical school after an exclusion?

That is very hard. Places are scarce, and a new application has to explain the exclusion.

Can I transfer from an Australian medical school to Europe or the Caribbean?

Yes. Medschool Experts organises transfers to English-taught medical schools in Europe or the Caribbean. The receiving university assesses your transcript, unit outlines and clinical hours, and the year of entry depends on your profile.

Can I practise in Australia after graduating abroad?

Yes. You take the AMC MCQ examination and the AMC clinical examination or a workplace based assessment, receive the AMC certificate and complete a period of supervised practice before general registration.

Do you plan my return to Australia as well?

Yes. We choose your university with the return in mind and plan the AMC examinations and your internship with you from the first day.

Does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost anything?

No. The transfer consultation is free and without obligation. We look at your transcript and your goals and explain which options are open to you.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
