Failing Medical School in Belgium? What to Do After a Refused Enrolment (2026)

Failing medical school in Belgium? Binding condition, refused enrolment or no longer finançable: your rights, appeal deadlines and the way back as a doctor.
Flanders
In short: Flemish universities monitor study progress (studievoortgangsbewaking). After a year with low study efficiency you receive a binding condition for the next enrolment. If you miss it, the university can refuse you. Students who started from 2023 must also pass all first-year courses within two years.
The learning account (leerkrediet) is the third limit. Every student starts with 140 credits, loses the credits of each course taken and wins them back only when the course is passed. With an empty account a university may refuse you or charge a higher fee.
A refusal is not confined to your own campus. Flemish universities exchange study progress data, and a new enrolment in the same programme elsewhere can be refused on the same grounds.
French Community
In short: In the French Community of Belgium you must remain finançable under the décret Paysage. You have to pass the first 60 credits of the bachelor and then the whole bachelor within a capped number of enrolments. A student who is no longer finançable can be refused by every university.
Each attempt at the entrance competition, and each year started, counts. Students who used two years for the first 60 credits have very little margin left for the rest of the bachelor.
| Point | Flanders | French Community |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Entrance exam with ranking | Entrance competition |
| Progress rule | Binding conditions, first-year courses within two years | Status finançable under the décret Paysage |
| Credit limit | Learning account of 140 credits | Capped number of enrolments per cycle |
| Appeal | Internal appeal within 7 calendar days | Internal appeal, then CEPERI within 15 working days |
Appeals
In short: In Flanders you file an internal appeal against an exam decision or a refusal within seven calendar days, and then go to the Council for Disputes about Study Progress Decisions. In the French Community you appeal inside the institution and then to the commission CEPERI within fifteen working days.
- Count the days: the Flemish deadline starts the day after the results are announced, weekends included.
- Exceptional circumstances: illness or a family event can lift a binding condition if you document it.
- Reasonable adjustments: with a diagnosed learning difference or chronic illness you can ask for adapted exam conditions before the next session.

Binding condition or refusal? Check your options now
We transfer you to medical schools in other EU countries whose degree is recognised in Belgium. In a free consultation we check which of them accept your passed credits and plan your route back to Belgium.

In short: Medical students in Belgium who fall behind rarely lack ability. They passed an entrance exam or competition that most candidates fail. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, a side job, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.
Belgian exam periods are long blocks in January and June, with a second session in August. A bad January leaves a full course load for June and a summer without rest.
None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.
Switch early
In short: In Belgium the best moment to transfer is the year in which a binding condition applies or your margin as a finançable student shrinks. You then leave before a refusal and with recent credits. After a refusal a transfer abroad is still possible.
- You study under a binding condition.
- First-year courses are still open in your second year.
- Your learning account is close to zero, or your status as finançable is at risk.
- Your enrolment has been refused.
If one of these applies to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the second session.
Next four weeks
- Week 1: read the education and examination regulations and check your learning account or your status as finançable.
- Week 1 to 2: note the appeal deadline and see the study counsellor or the ombudsperson of your faculty.
- Week 2 to 3: if anxiety, low mood or reading speed play a part, contact the student health service and ask about adjustments.
- Week 3 to 4: order your transcript and collect the course descriptions (ECTS sheets) of all passed courses.
- Before the second session: book a free transfer consultation and compare staying with a transfer and a planned return to Belgium.
Transfer within the EU
In short: A transfer from a Belgian medical programme to a medical school in another EU country is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcript and course descriptions. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.
A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Transfer abroad, return to Belgium: check your options
Send us your transcript. We tell you which EU universities accept your credits, which year you can enter and how your route back to Belgium looks, step by step. Free and without obligation.
Check my transfer optionsReturning to Belgium
In short: Yes, you can come back. A medical degree from another EU country is recognised in Belgium under Directive 2005/36/EC. The Federal Public Service Health issues your visa to practise, you register with the Order of Physicians and then apply for training in general practice or a specialty.
There is no knowledge test for EU degrees. What matters is that your degree gives full access to the profession in the country where you graduate, and we choose your university with exactly that in mind.

In short: Tuition in Belgium is roughly €835 a year in the French Community and about €1,200 in Flanders, but a refused enrolment costs the whole degree. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000, below Brussels, Leuven or Ghent.
How we help
Medschool Experts reviews your transcript and course descriptions in a free transfer consultation, finds EU medical schools that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Belgium. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.
The author's view
Belgian students often reach us in the first week of September, days after the second session and with an appeal deadline of seven days already running. That is a hard week to make a decision in.
I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015 at 24 and graduated in 2021. What I tell Belgian students is simple: the binding condition is the signal, not the refusal. Use the year in which you still have a valid enrolment to find out what your credits are worth in another EU country.
Summary
Failing medical school in Belgium is a question of study progress. Flanders works with binding conditions, the learning account and a two-year limit for the first-year courses. The French Community works with the status finançable. In both, the end point is a refused enrolment, and the appeal deadlines are short.
A transfer to a medical school in another EU country is possible, the degree is recognised in Belgium, and you receive your visa to practise. We plan that route home with you from the first day.
Conclusion
Do not wait for the refusal letter in September. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which EU universities accept the credits you have already passed and how you come back to Belgium as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.
Failing medical school in Belgium: 7 questions and answers
Can a Belgian university refuse my enrolment in Medicine?
Yes. In Flanders a university can refuse you after a binding condition was not met, when your learning account is empty or when the first-year courses are not passed within two years. In the French Community it can refuse students who are no longer finançable.
What is a binding condition in Flanders?
A condition attached to your next enrolment after a year with low study efficiency, typically passing at least half of the credits you take. If you miss it, the university can refuse further enrolment in the programme.
What does finançable mean?
In the French Community a student is finançable as long as the required credits are passed within the time limits of the décret Paysage. A student who is no longer finançable can be refused enrolment.
How fast do I have to appeal?
In Flanders the internal appeal must be filed within seven calendar days. In the French Community an appeal against a refused enrolment goes first to the institution and then to the commission CEPERI within fifteen working days.
Can I transfer to a medical school in another EU country?
Yes. Medschool Experts organises transfers to medical schools in other EU countries. The receiving university assesses your transcript and course descriptions, and the year of entry depends on your profile.
Is a medical degree from another EU country recognised in Belgium?
Yes. It is recognised under Directive 2005/36/EC. You receive the visa to practise from the Federal Public Service Health and register with the Order of Physicians.
Does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost anything?
No. The transfer consultation is free and without obligation.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
