Failing Medical School in Finland? What to Do When Your Study Right Runs Out (2026)

Failing medical school in Finland? Study right running out or extension refused: what happens now and how a transfer abroad brings you back as a doctor.
Right to study
In short: In Finland your right to study is limited by sections 40 to 42 of the Universities Act. The Licentiate of Medicine has 360 credits and a target time of six academic years, and you have the right to finish no later than two years after that. After eight years you keep your place only if the university grants an extension.
The rule applies to everyone who started on or after 1 August 2005. You see your remaining time in the study register of your university, under your study rights. Check it now. Many students learn the date from the notice that it has passed.
What counts
In short: Absence for military service, civil service or women's voluntary military service and for maternity, paternity or parental leave does not use up your study time. Semesters in which you were enrolled count, whether you passed anything or not.
If you transferred between Finnish faculties, the clock was not reset. The time you were present or absent under your earlier study right counts towards the degree at the new university. A change of city inside Finland therefore does not buy you time.
The real block
In short: The programme consists of two preclinical years and four clinical years. Clinical courses run once a year in fixed groups. One preclinical course that will not pass keeps you out of the clinic, and every lost year is taken from your eight.
Finnish faculties usually offer an exam and retakes each year, and there is no national limit on attempts. That sounds generous, but a retake passed in the autumn does not bring back the clinical group that started without you. Two such years and the reserve of two extra years is gone.
Extension
In short: An extension can be granted if you are able to complete your studies within a reasonable time. It is always given for a fixed period, at least one and at most four semesters at a time. The first extension follows your study plan and covers at most two academic years. A fee is charged for handling the application.
You apply with a study plan that lists every missing course and a semester for each. The university compares the plan with your record so far. A plan that needs more passed credits per semester than you ever managed is refused.
If the extension is refused or you do not apply, you lose your right to study. Continuing in Finland then means the entrance selection again or an application to have the study right restored. Order your transcript and course descriptions before that point, whatever the outcome.

Study right running out? Check your options before the deadline
We transfer you to medical schools in other EU countries whose degree is recognised in Finland. In a free consultation we check which of them accept your passed courses and plan your route back to Finland.
Book a free transfer consultationWhy students get stuck
In short: Medical students in Finland who struggle rarely lack ability, many of them sat the entrance exam several years in a row to get in. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, paid work beside the programme, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.
Depression shows up quietly, as lectures replayed without taking in a word. It is treatable, and the student health service is the place to start. If dyslexia or ADHD plays a part, individual arrangements in exams are possible.
None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.
Switch early
In short: If one course keeps blocking you, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. A transfer while your study right is still valid and your coursework is recent saves time and stress.
- The same course has kept you out of the clinical years for more than a year.
- You are two or more years behind your cohort.
- Your study right ends within the next two years.
- You are already studying on an extension.
- An extension has been refused.
If two of these apply to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the next exam.
Next four weeks
- Week 1: check the end date of your study right in the study register.
- Week 1 to 2: meet your study adviser and list every missing course with a realistic semester.
- Week 2 to 3: if anxiety, low mood or reading speed play a part, contact the student health service and ask about individual arrangements.
- Week 3 to 4: order your transcript in English and collect the course descriptions of all passed courses.
- Before you pay for an extension application: book a free transfer consultation and compare staying with a transfer and a planned return to Finland.
Transfer within the EU
In short: A transfer from a Finnish medical programme to an English-taught medical school in another EU country is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your transcript and course descriptions. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.
You would be in large company. In the 2024/25 academic year, 1,142 Finns received student financial aid for medical studies abroad, about four times as many as fifteen years earlier. One in three newly licensed doctors in Finland has trained abroad. The usual destinations are Sweden, Latvia, Estonia and Romania.
A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.
Kela grants student financial aid for a full degree abroad: a study grant, a housing supplement and the government guarantee for a student loan. You apply as soon as the university abroad has accepted you.

Transfer abroad, return to Finland: check your options
Send us your transcript. We tell you which EU universities accept your courses, which year you can enter and how your route back to Finland looks, step by step. Free and without obligation.
Check my transfer optionsReturning to Finland
In short: Yes, you can come back. A medical degree obtained in another EU country is valid in Finland as it stands, under Directive 2005/36/EC. To practise you need a licence, which Valvira grants on application. After that you can work as a doctor and start specialist training.
There is no extra knowledge test for EU graduates, and as a Finnish or Swedish speaker you already meet the language side of the job. What matters is that your degree gives full access to the profession in the country where you graduate, and we choose your university with exactly that in mind.
More than half of the Finns who study Medicine abroad plan to return to work in Finland directly after graduation.

In short: Studying in Finland costs no tuition, but a lost study right costs the whole degree. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000, well below Helsinki.
How we help
Medschool Experts reviews your transcript and course descriptions in a free transfer consultation, finds EU medical schools that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to Finland. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.
The author's view
When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021, and today nobody asks how old I was in my first semester. Finnish students who write to us often believe that a study right running out means they were never meant to be doctors. It means a clock at one university has run down. Plan the next step while the clock is still running. That is when the most doors are open.
Summary
In Finland a medical degree rarely ends with one exam. It ends when the right to study runs out: six years of target time plus two, and after that only with an extension. A new start at home means the entrance selection again.
A transfer to a medical school in another EU country is possible, the degree is recognised in Finland, and Valvira grants your licence. We plan that route home with you from the first day.
Conclusion
Do not wait for the last year of your study right. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which EU universities accept the courses you have already passed and how you come back to Finland as a doctor. Book your free transfer consultation.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
- Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
