Failing Medical School in Mexico? What to Do When You Face Permanent Removal (2026)

Σύντομη απάντηση
Failing medical school in Mexico? Enrolment limit reached or permanent removal: what happens now and how a transfer abroad leads back to a professional licence.
Enrolment limits
In short: Mexican universities limit the number of times a student may enrol in the same subject. At the national university a subject can be taken in ordinary enrolment twice. After that it can only be passed through extraordinary exams. Other public universities remove a student permanently after a subject is failed a set number of times.
Time limit
In short: A student may remain enrolled for a limited time, at the national university the length of the programme plus half of it. After that no ordinary enrolment is possible, and what remains must be passed by extraordinary exam. The full degree includes the year of undergraduate internship and the year of social service.
A private university takes students whom a public one has removed, at fees that often exceed €10,000 a year.

In short: Medical students in Mexico who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are the basic sciences in the first two years, long commutes, money and paid work, depression or anxiety and the hours of the clinical cycles.
None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.
Transfer abroad
In short: A transfer from a Mexican faculty to an English-taught medical school abroad is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. The receiving university assesses your certified record and syllabi in translation. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.
A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Transfer abroad, return to Mexico: check your options
Send us your record. We tell you which universities accept your subjects, which year you can enter and how your route back to Mexico looks. Free and without obligation.
Check my transfer optionsReturning to Mexico
In short: Yes, you can come back. The Ministry of Public Education revalidates studies completed abroad. With the revalidation you apply for your professional licence at the federal office for professions. With the licence you can practise, and you can sit the national exam for applicants to medical residencies.
- Comparison: the Ministry compares your programme with the Mexican one. Internship and social service are part of the Mexican degree, so document your clinical year abroad in detail.
- Documents: degree, record and syllabi with apostille and official translation.
- Residency: Mexican citizens with a degree from abroad compete in the national residency exam in the Mexican category once their studies are revalidated.
We choose your university with the revalidation in mind and tell you before you enrol which documents you must collect during your studies.

Revalidation depends on how your programme compares and how well it is documented. We set up the file with you in your first year abroad.

In short: Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000 a year. That is often less than tuition alone at a private medical school in Mexico.
How we help
Medschool Experts reviews your record in a free transfer consultation, finds medical schools among our more than 25 partner universities that fit your profile, prepares the application and the visa file, and plans your route back to Mexico. More than 500 students have been placed so far. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.
The author's view
When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021. Permanent removal is a decision about one programme at one university. Your passed subjects stay passed, and a university abroad credits them by content and hours. Ask for the certified record before you leave the building for the last time.
Summary
In Mexico the number of enrolments per subject, the extraordinary exams and the time limit decide whether you stay in the programme. A private university is the usual alternative, at a high price.
A transfer abroad is possible, and the return runs through revalidation of studies and the professional licence. We plan that route home with you from the first day.
Conclusion
Ask for your certified record and syllabi now, and book your free transfer consultation.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
